    I've never been comfortable referring to things as "over rated" or "under rated" becasue both presume that there is an absolute truth. I think lists like this are better named "stuff I don't get," and for me, Pet Sounds is the perfect example. I have heard more musicians that I have HUGE amounts of respect for and who's music I adore talk about how influential Pet Sounds was on their song writing, but I'm with you, I just don't get that album. But the great thing about music is that an album like Pet Sounds can turn the music theorists on thier heads with its harmonic complexities, and a simpleton like me can just listen to something else.

      Like we said in the beginning of the video, music is highly subjective and these are just our opinions/observations. I think most of the albums we talked about are good albums, but are often held up as some of the greatest albums of the ‘60s when we think there are way better albums from those artists.

    A lot of comments are saying that you weren't there, which was my first thought as well. I was 13 when this record came out and it was totally different and radical to what was about. You might be able to say this record here or this band there were doing it but I was 13 and played footy and sports, music wasn't a big part of my life so I wouldn't have known anything else at the time. It changed music, it changed fashion and it changed a way of thinking. Apparently in London you couldn't walk anywhere without the sounds of Sgt Pepper coming out of most shops. So to me it was VERY important at the time but I can see you looking back at the catalogue having different opinions and that's great. In this age of the internet people aren't allowed to have an opinion without some jerk offering to come around and decapitate the pet cat! ALL the best!

    100% agree with you. I'm72 years old and I had at times all of the albums you mentioned. I am especially happy someone had the nerve to pick the Velvet Underground album as a real dud. I never understood why people were buying their albums. They have somehow gained a legendary staus despite never having a hit or and less than average album sales. As an early Iron Butterfly fan I have agree that the In-A-Gddaa-Da Vida album is not their best work. Their follw up "Ball" is a much better album and my favorite of theirs. As for the Moody Blues "Days of Futures Pat", I agree. Not nearly their best work and often lame. They are usually given unjustified credit for being the first band to release an album with a symphony orchestra but that is not true. That album is a mixture of Moody Blues songs (with no orchestra on the tracks) and orchestra songs with no Moody Blues on those songs.

    Revolver is one of my top Beatle Albums. Pepper was ground breaking for it's time and had some wonderful songs. I believe one of the reasons we view songs differently as we age is we are used to hearing them and cannot ever listen again with a fresh set of ears. "Day in the Life" is arguably the best song ever written by the Beatles. Any album with that song alone is on my top 10 list. Once again, you cannot recreate hearing music or lyrics for the first time. The Beatles have influenced so many musicians, I hear so much of their artistic magic in the music that followed.

    • @TheVinylDen

      Revolver is probably one of the main reasons I think Sgt Pepper is overrated. Sgt Pepper is not only often held up as the greatest album of all time, it’s also used to describe other bands best or most innovative album (“it’s band X’s Sgt Pepper”), when Revolver is a way better album and is highly innovative in its own right.

  • @pcdriver

    The White Album - great album, on my regular queue, fast forward only through "Why Don't We Do It In the Road". In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida the album is not outstanding but the song is, with three great solos: keyboard, drum and guitar. Sgt. Peppers is a great, ground breaking piece. It's my understanding that Magical Mystery Tour, nice to listen to but, was only thrown together with stuff in their vault to capitalize on the attention Sgt. Pepper generated.

    At first I felt the same way about pet sounds as many people do, confused as to the hype and all. I think the record hits when you’re really sad, it did for me. Though, I suppose everybody’s got a different ear for music, and that’s cool.

    Disagree with the inclusion of Sgt. Pepper's, but TOTALLY agree with the white album. That should have been a really good, single LP.
    Also, the listener's perspective has a lot to do with it. The fact that Ian's view of Pet Sounds is so drastically effected by television commercials is an example of what I mean. Just because a bunch of corporations have overused the material to sell "dreams" shouldn't determine it's historic value or even enjoyable.

  • @Seaker24

    Good list! I agree on the Beatles, I never got Sgt. Pepper as a complete album. The White Album has great songs but the sequence doesn’t hold together. For me Revolver is amazing start to finish.

  • @ijeff2005

    I do favor a couple other Beatles albums over Sgt Pepper, but I think I know why its so iconic and it mostly has to do with being alive in 1967 and hearing this album when it was first released. It dramatically changed the landscape for pop music and was a huge influence on other artists who realized they needed to up their game. It also lead bands like the Stones to create experimental music like Satanic Majesties Request in response which really didn't work so well. So, if you weren't alive and listening to music in 1967 and you are listening to these albums objectively today, its a reasonable position to take that "Pepper" is overrated. As someone who did hear it for the first time in 1967, I pretty much agree with the overrated assessment even though it is still a very good album.

    Remember that you didn't encounter this music before you listened to a lot of music that has happened since.

    Great episode. I completely agree with your assessment of Sgt. Pepper. I love it, but it is not the best Beatles album. But I'm not on board with your thoughts on The White Album. As far as The Moody Blues, their Days of Future Past is a watershed for the beginnings of what we know as Progressive Rock. It's a wonderful album.

    I think you’re right that sometimes we are culturally funnelled into accepting some albums as seminal and legendary. As a Beatles fan, I forgive you, but don’t necessarily disagree with you. Sgt Peppers is brilliant but we’ve possibly been told it is the greatest and that has skewed our perception of it. The White Album too is wonderful, insomuch as it’s such an eclectic mix- something that wouldn’t maybe had occurred if it was limited to a single album. Thanks anyway for your thoughts. They certainly prompt discussion.

      I totally get that it's one of those "you had to be there" albums. I don't think that just because it was the first of its kind doesn't necessarily make it better though. The Model T came first, but I'd still rather have a '68 Mustang.

    Hi Guys - great job. The thing about Sgt. Pepper is, if you "grew up with it" - as I did, you likely have a different perspective for that LP. I don't see it as overrated at all - I do think it is essential and equally great. And, yes, I do think that Magical Mystery Tour probably is a better album, song for song and for "overall feel"... Iron Butterfly - well, their first LP, "Heavy" is much, much better than In-a-gadda-da-vida, which is certainly okay but a bit over-hyped, so no real disagreement with that. Pet Sounds - yeah, a bit hyped for sure, but a very good album. Not their best though, IMO (check out "Today" and "Surf' Up" (which would have been perfect if they switched in a couple of Dennis Wilson songs that he had during that timeframe, in place of Disney Girls and Student Demonstration Time.... but I digress... Now, about the Velvet Underground and Nico: many fans of the VU are able to hear that album in a way that non-fans will not. I don't mean that as an insult in any way - I just think that is a true statement. The one album that is overrated for me is "In the Court of the Crimson King". The issue with that is it has two really great songs and the rest of the album is dismal and boring, dragging the whole thing down. I just subscribed!

    Hey Nick and Ian! You guys are being honest and that is a good thing. If someone cannot express their own opinions then what is the point. Different opinions in my book are what makes life interesting. The Beatles and Beach Boys were important bands for their times. In my opinion my favorite Beatles Album would be Revolver. Not really a true fan of the Beach Boys. Although I have most of the Albums that you guys mentioned in this video.

    Very interesting list. I completely agree regarding Pet Sounds.While it's an innovative album for sure, and beautifully written by Brian Wilson, I find it a little monotonous. It's more or less all mid-tempo or slower, and for a so-called "rock" album, it doesn't rock at all. If you think of all-time great records like Who's Next or Revolver or ZoSo or Bringing it All Back Home, there is a mix of slow and fast, ballads and rockers, etc.

    • @TheVinylDen
      @TheVinylDen  9 місяців тому

      I’ve always found it interesting how Pet Sounds is held up as one of the greatest albums of the ‘60, and while I love the album I think there are similar albums from that time period that way more innovative.

  • @Doc_Tar
    @Doc_Tar 9 місяців тому +1

    I would agree with about half of your selections. Were there no Bob Dylan albums in the 60s that were overrated? Shouldn't you be considering albums as close to possible in their context? If you listen to old albums today and compare them to all the music that came AFTER those tracks then you're most likely judging it to songs that were inspired by if not blatantly copying the ground-breaking album. What was music like before "Pet Sounds" or "Sgt. Pepper"? I'm going to look for your 70's overrated video next and see what you've put on that list.

    • @TheVinylDen
      @TheVinylDen  9 місяців тому +1

      It’s funny you mention Bob Dylan. Blonde on Blonde was also in the episode but was cut for time. It’s a good album but I can easily think of at least 3 or 4 Dylan albums from the ‘60s that are way better, but it’s often listed as one of the best albums of the decade.

    Groundbreaking, high impact, in general. You had to be there.
    But after all, you can't repeat over and over for any long-term.
    The Beatles stuff is all like that. Strong in singles, but I listen for some favorite cuts from their solo records more often than the actual Beatles albums.

  • @danny1959
    @danny1959 9 місяців тому +1

    The term “overrated” implies a judgement on the tastes of others. It’s okay not to rate an album highly, but I don’t judge other people, including both of you, as lacking in discernment because they think an album is better or worse than I do. That said, Sgt. Pepper seems to have fallen lost its luster in favor of Revovler, which is actually their first experimental album.

    • @TheVinylDen
      @TheVinylDen  9 місяців тому

      I don’t think I’m judging other people, but more so questioning why some albums are far too often held up like they were touched by the hand of god when we think those bands have better albums. Like we said in the beginning of the video though, we understand that everyone has their own taste in music, and music is probably the most subjective form of art.

    hahahahah!
    Ok, as someone who has a basically religious devotion to the Beatles, I was with you on Sgt. Pepper (although I think for awhile now Revolver and Abbey Road (and maybe even Rubber Soul) have been acknowledge to be better albums). I was even sort of with you on the White Album. Of course there's a range in terms of quality, but I also think it's not an album that's just a compilation of songs; it's really a vibe and as such is a masterpiece, to my ear. But still, whatever, to each their own with respect to taste.
    Reasonable people can disagree about such things.
    But Pet Sounds? That had me scream "You're crazy" at my tv. I mean, seriously? Have you no ears to hear nor heart to feel? :)

    • @TheVinylDen
      @TheVinylDen  9 місяців тому +1

      My main reason that I think that both of those Beatles albums are overrated are that they are often held up as not only the pinnacle of the Beatles' career but also as two of the best albums ever created. I think albums like Revolver, Abbey Road, and Magical Mystery Tour are way better albums overall, and just as innovative (if not even more innovative) than Sgt Pepper.

      @@TheVinylDen Thanks for responding (and especially for the video). I do agree with you, to be sure. What makes Pet Sounds a masterpiece for me probably starts with the introspection, the feelings. "I once had a dream so I packed up and split for the city. I soon found out that my lonely life wasn't so pretty." To me that just nails a genuine, existential feeling, and it's just so direct. John Lennon-direct. And it's real. Like Plastic Ono Band and Blue. And then there's the arrangements, the timbres. And of course, the melodies, harmonies, and vocal performances. And the playing of the "Wrecking Crew."
      I just literally don't really get what's not to be moved or turned on by; to me, it's as pure and cogent a demonstration of all the things I look for in music as could be.
      I'm just genuinely curious what other people (who think it's overrated) hear that I don't.
      Anyway, thanks again!

    Days Future past was the first example of their style and had the greatest hit or classic on it. Loved later records of the Moody Blues more, but for critics the innovation factor values more. Same goes for Seargent Pepper, Revolver is more consistent, but evolution from Rubber Soul, Pepper was a big leap forward, Magical Mystery went to Album in 1971, as a kind of compialation of Movie stuff and other Material, that was recorded between SP and White Album, therefore MMT is a great Album (like it also more than SP) but it is no Original Album of the 60s.

    Yes only to many albums in any era are way over rated. People brag and boast over them when there may a few good songs on them all the rest is fluff. Like Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. This Album. It has a few good songs on it along with a fancy album cover and all the rest of the album is fluff & filler… Choir boy music, special effects and Sissy boy singing. Big deal! Dark side of the moon is the same thing, A few good songs with a whole lot of taping effects and weird noises. All the fluff & filler is a crutch for a lack of good musical material and talent. Like any other industry in this world the recording industry just sells a lot of sugar coated melody's gone astray.

    The best album of all times is The Beatles aka The White Album by The Beatles. I play this album even more than once a month for 45 years. Can you imagine

    Calling the White Album overrated is stretch - could it have used some editing? maybe. Are the great songs really great and iconic? Totally. i'm with you regarding Pet Sounds - never got it

      My main reason for saying the white album is overrated is that it’s often held up as one of the greatest musical achievements of all time, when I think there are way better and more innovative albums from the late ‘60s. I still think it’s a great album (and own several copies of it), I just think it would have been better had they cut several songs from the album.

    Strongly disagree about Sgt. Peppers. It's a classic, arguably the very first 'Prog' or at least porto-prog album. Much better, more concise and less over indulgent than The White Album. Completely Agree about the White Album, 3 sides are spot on, in words, They had too much great stuff for a single album but not really enough for a great double record. Disagree about Pet Sounds, because the innovative arrangements, recording techniques, and the vibe, all influenced The Beatles and 'Sgt. Pepper'. Agree about The Velvet Underground. IMO an overrated band, period. Somewhat disagree about PF's 'Piper', it's praise IMO should go more for its innovative styles the compositions are sometimes child like naif, other times catchy, sometimes just trippy, sometimes chaotic and even a bit disturbing, in other words its got a unique and never since replicated sound, even though it is a bit over hyped by the Sad Barrett fans. Can't comment on The Moody Blues coz I never listed to that one (shame on me). Cheers

    The Beatles are a Boomer band. A little Gen X too. They were the 2nd wave of making Black music safe for white consumption.
    They almost single-handedly created music journalism and critique.
    Helping to create the rock genre without the black and Native people that gave it roots.
    It became high art.
    They were a solid group of lads with the most innovative producer in the world.
    George Martin was the real wizard.
    The 4 lads got better and better.
    John and George peaked, shortly after the breakup and Paul kept growing.
    Ringo needed the unique combination of styles of the others, in order to trigger his creative play.
    He was no good as a solo artist or with a conventional l band.

    I agree with what you say about Sgt. Pepper but I disagree with part of why you say it. I mean it's pretty clear why it is revered as much as it is. Before Sgt. Pepper you didn't have many of the ideas and techniques displayed on that album let alone the styles acceptable for a pop/rock band. The reason it seemed like the hand of God came down on the Beatles is easy to understand if you put yourself in June of 1967. It dropped jaws from the most jaded fans to people who never even listened to the Beatles. My favorite Beatles album is Revolver by the way. The same goes for Pet Sounds. If you were around during the time Pet Sounds came out you would get the hype. I'm sure you know Pet Sounds was inspired by Rubber Soul and it in turn inspired Sgt. Pepper. You build from one step to the next. I grew up as a kid in the 70s and a lot of my peers dissed 60s music and like you, they were not understanding what it was like to be of that time period. I have siblings who are all much older than me and I grew up with their records and a better understanding of what it was like to be a boomer. You may as well rate medieval paintings with their lack of depth from a realistic art perspective.

      I’m sure it’s one of those “you had to be there” kind of albums. While I do think it’s a good album, it’s hard for me to think of it as one of the best albums of all time (as it almost always is, and it often in the number one spot), when Revolver is hands down a way better album IMO.

    • @bradparnell614
      @bradparnell614 9 місяців тому

      I too agree that Revolver is better but if you go through time, you'll find that people putting Revolver above Sgt. Pepper is a feeling that has grown over time. You'd be hard pressed to find that many people preferring any Beatles album to Sgt. Pepper even back in the 1980s. Like Ram, it's an album that has gained appreciation over time by critics and fans alike. People who declare it one of the best of all time are likely incorporating historical importance within their criteria whether consciously or not.

    Hey guys. Just stumbled on to your channel. Even though I'm a huge Beatles fan, I totally agree Pepper is overrated. The White Album I'd throw away about 5 or 6 songs & Pet Sounds is WAY OVER RATED & I am a Beach Boys fan too. The album has a few decent songs but a masterpiece? No way!!!!
    I just subscribed to your channel
    P.S. Didn't finish the video. Velvet Underground? WAY OVER RATED
    Lou Reed with that annoying voice!
    Yuck!!! Garbage!
    Days Of Future Passed? OK album. Nothing great. A little pretentious sounding with the orchestra. Didn't the Beatles already do that?
    Oh Piper At The Gates of Dawn?
    BLOWS!!!! Syd Barrrett was a low talent musician who wrote weird crappy songs. Best thing to happen to Pink Floyd was getting rid of him and getting Gilmour. Much better band! Syd Barrett is over rated!
    Another edit. I forgot about In A Gadda Da Vida. Only decent song on that album but it's wayyyyy too long. Way overrated

    I’m sorry, but Sgt. Pepper is a milestone album for the Beatles and it is one of the greatest albums of all time. The problem is that we’re all so sick of it! The same as Stairway to Heaven. We become repulsed by anything that’s oversaturated. I’m 57 and started listening to the Beatles in ‘74 so I’ve seen most of the journey this album has taken over the years.

    The thing that you guys miss is that you have hind sight. You have heard these older albums after hearing music that has come after. Take Sgt. Pepper. There was no album before it that was rock and orchestra fused together like this, that had a running theme. Before this, rock albums were a collection of single worthy songs and filler. This changed all that. Moody Blues took it a step further, etc. Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd progressed things further in the 70s, etc. Some songs not all still hold up today but even if they don't - their existence paved the way for the technology and soundscapes we have now...

      Beatles exploded at the right time and place in history. Up until that time it was boy singers and surf music. Pepper was groundbreaking in its time and continues to be a great piece of music. Over the years I've come to think Revolver is as good if not better than Pepper. If it wasn't for the Beatles there would not be any rock and roll. All rock and pop bands owe thanks to them.

      Speaking as a huge Beatles fan, I disagree. But I understand your perspective. The issue is that the Beatles wrote the song first, then added a beat on top of it. They didn't base any of their tracks on "the beat" (except for the transcendent "Tomorrow Never Knows"). But music in the last 40 years has been built around the beat. So the Beatles are irrelevant. The Stones always had a stronger beat, and they endure.
      For songwriters, the Beatles will always be important, the way classical music is now. But the general audience want to dance and move.

    • @frabis1
      @frabis1 9 місяців тому +1

      @@aquamarine99911 not sure what "writing the song first and adding a beat on top of it" really means, but to many, including me, the reason a lot of Beatles music transcends much of popular music since then is precisely because they were capable of writing songs in the tradition of the Great American Songbook, rather than only dance music or only experimental music (all of which they could do). I love the Stones but they've always been much more blues based and while they were great at what they did/do, there was little that was groundbreaking.
      Also re the Beatles and the Stones, it's crucial to remember that except for the Apple rooftop, the Beatles never played live since 1966. It's a lot easier to be "enduring" when you're still mostly alive and touring now as opposed to having given your last performance 50+ years ago.
