Funny you should mention Stan, this is actually an issue that Jack wrote and drew on his own. It was after he left marvel to work at DC for a while. During that time Stan was mainly the publicity-man, and didn't really have much to do with the actual internal workings at marvel.

i loved this as a kid when i read the original/1st printings in the 70's, the range of Kirby's imagination was unparalleled/unmatched. and he made stories 'big' and had you feel you read 100 pages in one issue vs. the 'decompressed comics' numb-nuts who spend 4 pages of characters blathering while sharing coffees, and in 3 issues you feel you've read 10 pages. the original Black Panther-run was given to me by an African American in-law, who, by the way, also introduced me to Star Trek; he related more to Kirk than anyone else. then again, he had an open mind.

Wow, look at the eyes on Black Panther. They emote so well. Even though his face is covered by a mask just by the eyes I can tell when he is surprised, bored, determined or whatever. That's well done.

The Black Panther story was from '77, the Tales of Suspense story in the back was from about 1967.
Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Joe Sinnott and Artie Simek was one of the great teams of the Silver Age.

I like how they use "true believers" whenever they're trying to sell something nostalgic, but never for their new comics, the people making the new comics aren't true believers themselves

Nothing quite like the classics. Stories of grand adventures, and larger than life heroes that acted like heroes. It's a simple formula that Jack, and Stan used for many years that helped make Marvel what it is. If Marvel wanted to use messages in their stories, they were more subtle about it back in Jack's time.

  • @tedthez

The Black Panther / Captain America story was from Tales of Suspense #98, Feb. 1968 - almost 10 years before Star Wars.

tedthez Google the cover to Amazing stories februart 1928. Youll see a picture of basically the death star before star wars came about. Also the original star trek series had an episode called The Doomsday Machine. It first aired October 1967. Its about a planet killing machine. Sound familiar?

Good to see you reviewing a comic that's actually good! I'm not a marvel reader(anymore) but added this to my pull because it was only a $1. WOW it was actually a lot of fun, it had my imagination racing with possibilities. Then I thought for a moment, where is all the adventure, mystery, and excitement in Marvel comics? It's really sad that wild ride comics like this one aren't around anymore.

I actually want to have Black Panther talk about slavery. I want to have him talk about how black people in Africa sold their own for profit. I want to have him talk about how the Arabic world equally enslaved black and white people in the past. I want to have him talk about how Saudi Arabia has black slaves TO THIS VERY DAY.

I've heard so many older fellows talk about Kirby's work even going so far as finding parallels that would mirror actual incidents in real life. It's really interesting. But the one thing everyone agrees on that he was a legend in his own right and his craft cannot be imitated.

LOL!! New Gods was many fans favorite. If anyone knows Paris Cullins. I've been close friends with him for years. I remember when he was drawing New Gods (also did some work on Blue Devil) for awhile. He's another old school comic fan who along with close friends of him that can attest to Kirby being their "god" who inspired them to become comic pros. When he was drawing it you can tell he wanted to give it the same feel that Kirby did decades ago.

Exactly my point in the stream, man. Kirby and most writers of those times knew that SJW shit wasn't needed to tell stories, even stories about actual oppression or minority lifestyles could be told in an inclusive way that invites more people to come together rather than divide them. And the action and pacing were so good!
This is exactly why I mentioned the Marvel Essentials Thor, which were black and white reprints of the old Lee/Kirby Thor books. they also had Essential Black panther and some others if I recall, I wonder if these are just like those but colorized and smaller? Also I noticed the Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon show was similar in it's breakneck pacing speed and desire to move from one plot point to another to deliver nonstop adventure.
Anyway, good video showing how these things used to be done.

  • @RYANOvision

Great video. Glad to see a popular channel highlighting King Kirby!
I do have to put my two cents in on Mr. Kirby" lifting" from other sources such as Star Wars, although I do see the similarities with the Death Star in this instance. George Lucas was an quoted as saying he was a fan of Jack Kirby and the New Gods was one of his favorites. New Gods predated Star Wars and you can see a lot of similarities in tone of story (with the hero being the son unknowingly to his enemy, etc.). Lucas even called the "evil" force the "Darkside"! Some say Lucas lifted from Kirby!

    • @Maxwell03
      @Maxwell03 7 років тому

I actually change my mind, the problem with the talent assigned to these specials, is not that they're not superstar writers and artists, it's that most of them don't hold a candle to the quality of Jack Kirby, judging by their work, in my opinion.

Reminded me of why I loved comics since I was a kid... just guys/girls doing their best, putting themselves in danger for a heroic cause. Now it's just rando PoC LBGTQ trans women whining about being oppressed and occasionally punching a paunchy white middle aged villain who is usually of no real threat to anybody.

This goes to show you future writers overthought writing guys like Batman and Black Panther, that they forget that we should relate to them to connect better with the character as a whole. That's why Batman: War on Crime was so cool because they kept it simple and kept him as a street level hero, not the third richest person in all of comic history.
