60's Spider-Man is well known for it's memes; but theres a lot of history behind it that I wanted to explore. So let's take a look at the first ever Spider-Man cartoon!
(Yes that was me playing the harmonica)
Intro - 0:00
Season 1 - 2:19
Season 2 - 17:37
Season 3 - 27:54
Outro - 35:38
I do not own any of the clips or music used in this video.
I have my Spiderman 1967 dvd boxset autographed by Paul S 🕷️...i met him at ComicCon
I had no clue Benny passed. May he rest in paradise.
He 100% deserves to rest after years of talking about comics. Hope he doesn’t get those people disrespecting him. Rest in peace ben
R I P..... Benny
Yo, wtf happen ? I causally watch his channel , this is sad AF R.I.P 🍻 😢
@@joezar33it was an accident, but they’re keeping it private
he died from what???
The music of this show was terrific
I grew up watching the 60’s Spider-Man cartoon…absolutely loved it! Love it to this day. It is my favorite Spider-Man!
The Perfect J.Jonah Jameson.
Set the Standard.
facts
R.I.P. Comicstorian. He'll never get to see Deadpool and Wolverine now. In the video he did about it last month he was so hyped and said "he couldn't wait to see what's the future of Marvel and DC had to offer." 💔
For how limited the budget was for this show, the show did an impressive feat on making this Spider-Man face a bunch of sci Fi obscurities (proof that 60's Spider-Man is the strongest Spider-Man)
thats because half the animation was recycled from Rocket Robinhood lol
As an adult, I now also truly appreciate the underrated late '60s Progressive Jazz/Hard Bop soundtrack. This is phenomenal music and its available free on UA-cam if you can find it. Look up artists like Ray Ellis, Martha Jane Weber, Kenny Graham and Syd Dale for some amazing scores created just for the show- Ex: Rescue Squad by Syd Dale. These were the waning years of popular jazz as Rock was taking over, so interesting to see the state of music at this time.

Yeah, '60s Spidey will always be my Spidey. Even with the little trick he does when he catches the falling I beam (which halts his swing, but after a pause he resumes swinging.)
The 60s Spidey had the best music; especially season 2!
My first introduction to Spidey in the 70's after school. This will always be a sentimental series for me. Interesting history.
Me too, my friend. Me too.
Of course it holds up. It's Spider-Man.
The best Spiderman animated series ever to this day in my opinion.
I remember watching this as a youth in the mid 70's, loved it, it's how I discovered Spiderman, this was an awesome informative video, thank you.
This show was my introduction to Spidey when I was 5 or 6 in the early 70’s. My friend Rodney singing that iconic theme song. I have the dvd collection. It’s still great to me. Totally fun to watch. One way or another, a few of the live action films pay homage to this cartoon.
No Spiderman has yet to beat that 60's Spiderman soundtrack.
Spider-Man's greatest enemy: The Green
Grew up with it and the first season stands up, the next couple seasons are too far removed from the source to hold up well but has nostalgia value.
Imagine if they redid the 67 Spider-Man with today's animation.
Fun fact: Green Goblin voice actor Len Carlson also voiced Senator Kelly in the 90’s X-Men Animated Series
RIP Benny. Miss you, big man
Gone, but not forgotten.
This is ABSOLUTELY the BEST SPIDER MAN …. EVER.
I just finished watching the spider man unlimited vid and u uploaded, the chances 😂
It's held up better than how the comics are doing as of recent.
I totally agree
The history of this show is such a trip. I knew about the Rocket Robin Hood thing and some of the production problems, but I wasn't aware of some of the other history or the importance of so many of the people involved. And being Canadian and this fitting that weird and incredibly loose definition of "Canadian content," this played on TV for several decades after it probably shouldn't have. This is pure insanity that could have only happened in the 60s, and I'm not talking about the LSD backgrounds from season 2.
Also, green-face is my new favourite term now.
Can you do Spider-Man 1981 Next?
the 1967 Spider-man cartoon will always be my favorite.I still watch it till this very day and enjoy it.footnote-Paul Soles didnt do the voice of The Hulk from the Marvel Sperheroes cartoon series-that credit was given to Max Ferguson.
it's the best version of the character. pure, no angst or baggage.
This show was a staple in my house when I was a kid. Yep. Never missed an episode.
60's Spider Man is beautiful. It's the best! Let's not knock it!
Rip Benny aka comicstorian gone but never forgotten
Wallopin' Web snappers! Yeah, it still holds up! Unlike other Spidey cartoons, I NEVER get tired of it!
Well, as a kid I LOVED IT! And I always remembered (1) The GREAT theme song and (2) the fact that the animation was by far superior to that of Captain America, Iron Man, The Submariner, The Hulk and The Mighty Thor cartoons from that era.
60's spiderman always rocks 24/7=52' of the year ,
What a great and objective documentary on a show of which I have very fond memories, for all of its flaws. BTW you are totally correct: Rocket Robin Hood totally merits a revival, theme tune and all!
The question is, does current Spiderman hold up to this Spiderman😮
16:25 nahhh that's wild ☠️😭
BLM supporters wouldn’t be so happy to see this💀
(not that i am not BLM supporter im just saying)
I remember having the 📼 VHS in the 80s as a kid , actually, 1 of my black friends thought it was hilarious 😂
@@MasterofMonkeys16😅🤭
The main villain was an Australian stereotype as well , forget to add that 😅
I was born in the 60's and was cannon fodder for Saturday morning cartoons! LOVED this show, Villians like the Rhino, Mysterio and Electro are tattooed in the deepest wrinkles in my brain...Still reading Spider-Man comics today, Dude's a life long friend.
To this day, NO sound design has EVER equalled or surpassed the web shooting sound effect used for this show! They did manage to nail Jameson (thank you, JK Simmons). The music for first season still needs a proper release.
What you totally ignored was how the KPM music library was BANGIN!!! the second seasons use of the KPM's cuts of 60's power jazz was why most people fell in love with Spiderman
100% This is phenomenal music!! Look up artists like Ray Ellis, Martha Jane Weber, Kenny Graham and Syd Dale for some amazing scores created just for the show- Ex: Rescue Squad by Syd Dale. I first heard of and saw Rocket Robinhood last year and immediately realized that the 1960's Spider-Man cartoon was reusing footage (or as was pointed out in this video, stolen model sheets) from Rocket Robinhood.
I really want to watch this show, but its hard to find
Rest In Paradise Benny.
Thanks for this excellent video! I was half expecting some 67 Spiderman bashing, but instead, I got an intelligent and entertaining history. 👍
Thank you for posting this! You TOTALLY broke down my childhood by my love for this cartoon & this was a GREAT mini doc you made👍🏿😸👍🏿😸❤️
1960 Spider-Man is still top tier cartoon
Also Jaboody Dubs voice overs are also top tiers.
How the box set and still better than anything on tv today.
Well at least it much more fun than Zeb Well’s run so I prefer this over any other Spider-Man media and rip Benny
Meanwhile, Disney spends 22 million dollars per episode of the Acolyte that everyone hates.
This was my first introduction of Spider-Man in kindergarten back in the 2000's
I vividly remember seeing BOTH Revolt in the 5th Dimension and Phantoms from the Depths of Time when Local Channel 5 (NYC/NJ) were running the syndications on weekday afternoon ('80-'82?). Those episodes were soooo creepy/psychedelic, they haunted my dreams for awhile! My friends and I loved those stories, however wild and weird (and incomprehensible!) they were at the time No other cartoons were telling stories like these, and none since!! Ralph Bakshi does not get enough credit for creating these unintended masterpieces!!
I'll always love this adaptation of the wall crawler, it's simple fun with a unique campy detective feel to it. If there's ever a DVD boxset, best believe I'll be snatching it. And the theme song is one theme I've been wanting to transcribe for big band for a minute. Great video my g!
Love your videos man keep up the great work!
Comicstorian passed away? 🤨😮 Sad news man, RIP Benny! I enjoyed his videos. Respect for the dedication, or I may not have noticed if his videos stopped popping up on my algorithm. Big up 🇬🇧
Spiderman 1967 will always be my favorite. The theme music is the best.
A bunch of us grew up watching this ...along with Speed Racer and Captain Scarlet (you guys know who you are...lol)
I'm one of them... and I'm ding-dong proud of it!
Have you seen Astro Boy?
8:27 I love the way you say "Spyduh-Man." Like a young Woody Allen. 👍🏻
I grew up in the 90s but during second grade I was staying in California for a year and we found this strange Video store that had a bunch of tapes of this cartoon and I loved them and used to watch them a ton! There was indeed something very special about this version of the character and the stories and I can see why so many people love it but it’s not my Spider-man. For everyone who thinks it’s the best I support you and your opinion but I just don’t connect with this Spider-man! However I support all the people that love this show. Huge Spider-man fan! Looking forward to more of your content on the website with more of the latest updates!
0:54 that's not the design that Jack Kirby made for Spider-Man in fact that's just a repurposed image of Giant-Man from Tales to astonish #51 and while we never saw what Jack Kirby's original design was Steve Ditko drew that design in comparison to his design
The greatest mystery of all was how could Spider-man web swing ABOVE the skyscrappers??
7:49 - just a minor point but the 2017 cartoon did animate the mouth on mask, it just wasn’t as noticeable as the 60s cartoon
Rip Benny. I loved watching this cartoon growing up
i think the spiderman from 1960's and spiderman and his amazing friends with firestorm and ice man are the best spiderman cartoons
I'd also get the 90s animated show in that group, but great choices
You forgot to mention all of the MUSIC in the GOOD!
Everything from past eras holds up if you like it, if it's your thing. There is a tonne of stuff further back done by people at the top of their game.
Always have deeply loved this incredible, beautiful animated show 📺
As a kid it was really mind blowing and cool in a way that we couldn’t explain. .. and I was watching both of these in Canada every weekday in the mid late 70’s and 80’s
Recently picked up the Spider-Man '67 Collection, I've wanted it since it originally came out. I remember saying, "I'll wait for it to come down in price." Good thing I waited so long. 🤷♂ The animation is better than I remember, but I've only watched the 1st season so far. I'd say it holds up compared to other animations of the time.
RIP Benny the Comicstorian. He was a Great person and made me and so many others happy with his comics content. God bless him. We will see Benny again in Heaven, but not any time soon at all I pray !
To Benny ! The Comicstorian, the LEGEND !!!
Love your views on this and awesome 👏 info!! Thanks!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I thoroughly enjoyed Spider-Man 67. Even the ones that shared the same footage with rocket Robin Hood. The being from The Fifth Dimension
Yes, because unlike today, they stayed true to the comics.
Paul Soles Rip!
I saw "Revolt in the Fifth Dimension" back in the 1970s on a local Pennsylvania UHF channel that reran the series and I LOVED it! Now I want to see the original version, "Dementia 5" from "Rocket Robin Hood"!
Funny. I first watched this series on UA-cam during its golden days in 2007.
I'm almost 50 and I remember watching this as a kid...... But I've never seen any of the clips from seasons 2 and 3
I'm same age as you, but vividly remember the trippy/psychedelic Revolt in the 5th Dimension episode because it gave me nightmares! Local station Channel 5 (NYC/NJ area) aired them in the early 1980s on weekday afternoons. No other cartoons were telling stories like this back then.
At the time was the best series of Spiderman until the 1980s version . Although they reused clips over and over again. There was a series that was called Electric Company , Spider-Man’s first ever live action of the character and then TV The Spectactular Spiderman live action in 78 , 79 . Not to mention Japanese Spiderman a couple years later this show bought to you the first of its kind .
Actually, "The Electric Company"'s version was titled "Spidey Super Stories" and the 1977-1978 live action version was titled "The Amazing Spider-Man".
Forever will be missed
Fr i appreciate the beginning. Rip Benny the comicstorian😢 🕊️🕊️
I think I only ever saw the same five episodes of this show whenever I stumbled on it. I love the music to this day. ✨🕷️✨
It was phenomenal music (late '60s Hard Bop/Progressive Jazz) compared to what other cartoons were playing at the time!!
60s spiderman was iconic- the 1st season was perfect, but started going off the rails with the 2nd and 3rd. Spiderman was fighting wizards and other dimensional threats, rather than his normal ny villains. The epidodes that actually based the story on the comics were the best ones.
Dated it might be, but I loved it. I absolutely loved this style of animation as it was like watching your favourite comic book characters come alive. Many people out there will dismiss these classic cartoons as a lot of stills were constantly re-used and it became repetitive but to be honest I would definitely take these old cartoons over the the cgi influenced crap that they've been making since the early 2000's, it's just so depressing!!! Another great factor about these type of cartoons is the atmosphere that they created, that sinister music playing in the background, it just ramped up the tension. Those little touches make all the difference. I still enjoy watching these, however.......I did lose interest when they started to feature the " Psychedelic " era, they were just dire, we never even got to see the regular villians anymore and the show just wasn't the same anymore. Yes I admit the storylines and actions were questionable, either by the silly villians and even by Spiderman himself. They definitely took creative liberties when it came to Spiderman being able to spin any kind of object with his webbing, I still remember when he was able to fight & win a sword fight with the villians by spinning himself a perfect looking sword?? But this is a cartoon for God's Sake and not a factual documentary, it's purely for entertainment purposes and it still continues to do that. Shows like this, Johnny Quest, Tarzan Lord Of The Jungle, The Space Sentinels, The Fantastic Four, The Hulk, Spiderman & His Amazing Friends, Spiderman 5000, Xmen & The Spiderman series both reboots from 1991, Flash Gordon, Dundgeons & Dragons, He- Man & The Spiderwoman Animated show from the late 1980's, for me, despite their flaws, I still love them, and it's best not to read too much into them, just sit back and enjoy them, for enjoyment's sake.
Loved this as a kid. While it was on it was one of or maybe even my top favorite (Season 1 beat out anything else, season 2 almost always did, season 3 must havevreally turned me off though because I only recall maybe 3 or 4 episode you mentioned, though liked them). Objectively flawed, but, just like Season 1 of the Super-Friends so tied up with memories that it's always a welcomed blast from the past. And, gotta say, now looking back, I far more appreciate their original villains than I did back then. But this video made me realize so ething for the first time; in this universe green is an actual enthnicity. Like, how did I not notice all that green back then? I'd love for a Spiderverse story to reference that, lol. Cool and informative video.
I actually found the complete series online for only $100 used. The only thing it’s missing is the DVD booklet that came with it. Pretty expensive for a set, but I knew I would never see it again, so I jumped on it.
Technically, the Human Torch was a teenager but an equal member of the Fantastic Four and not a sidekick. Speaking of the FF, their show premiered the same day with animation by Hanna-Barbera. No one remembers their theme song.
I love this show so much. I watched it in reruns when I was a boy, and it cemented my love for the character and led me to read the comics. However, it is unwatchable to me now due to the music, which gets stuck in my head because they repeat it over and over during the episodes. Was this done for the same reason as the repeated animation frames?
When they aired this cartoon in the 1970s (when I was a kid), I always hated the episodes from seasons 2 and 3. The Raplh Bashki ones looked so ugly to me with their dark water-color backgrounds. They were so weird.
Good show Ole Bean!

Well Done!
Love it.

HELL YEAH 60’s SPIDER MAN IS SOO DOPE!!!!
Doctor Magneto is my favourite s**tty villan ever! I would love to see Marvel bring him back and fight THE Magneto!
Review 90's X-men animated series.
33:19 There is a good explanation for that... Multiverse !!!

i was introduced to it in the 80s. i thought for a long time season 2 was season one because of the origin and that it looked more dated. never saw season 3. I love season 1 at least, the music of the show is still what i think of as spiderman music and the tone, along with the early comics is the tone i love for spiderman
