Mega mushroom *featured on the box art* Also mega mushroom: *70% of the time the levels weren't made for it and is barely useful* But on the multiplayer mode it's probably the most strong power up in the game and actually allows you to interact with the stages and overall cause mayhem.
Agreed, I kinda prefer just using a star since it's both invulnerability and decent speed (whereas the mega mushroom is *extremely* situational, but totally satisfying if used right).
It’s even more powerful than the star (unlike Mario Kart Wii) because when a mega player bumps into a starman player the mega player will just get pushed away slightly while the starman gets yeeted away in a stomped animation.
Omg the way that power up made the screen shake when the player with it would approach your location made me so on edge and engaged when i was a kid playing this lol

I remember holding onto one till the final boss just to watch Mario completely decimate them and instantly win. I did the same with the mini mushroom for the extra challenge. Man New Super Mario Bros was such a fun game.
Recently been replaying this game for the first time in like a decade, it's quite refreshing after slogging through hundreds of bad stages in Mario Maker lol
I honest had no idea they had a failsafe at the block staircase. It's amazing they thought about it. The Giant Mushroom is cool, but my problem with the power up is that there aren't very many good places to use it.
you know what i love the most about new super mario bros? the bosses. no lame koopalings that are almost the same boss over and over again. we got pokey, that big fish, piranha plant, monty in a tank, mega goomba, THUNDER lakitu. and of course the hypest bossfights against bowser.
God, New Super Mario Bros. for the DS was truly a masterpiece video game for me. Both the Mini Mushroom and Mega Mushroom were just so satisfying to use! And the Blue Shell was tricky but so fun as well. It was such a different take that I still regard the game highly to this day!
I think level 1-2 also uses mega-mushroom well. If you go to the pipe in the middle of the level, you'll appear in a coin bonus area, but you can see that there are brick blocks at the bottom, and you can destroy them with koopa shell. If you do so, you'll find another bonus area, this time with a lot of blocks with goombas walking on them, and a ?-block with mega-mushroom. Mega-mushroom here is a nice reward for exploring the level.
Unlike the Blue Shell, the Mega Mushroom actually gets a fair amount of use in Mario games. It was in Mario 64 DS (as a normal colored mushroom), New Super Mario Bros 1 & 2, Mario Kart Wii, the Mario & Luigi series, Mario Tennis Ultra Trash, and even Mario 3D World which allowed 4 players to turn mega at one time. Nintendo certainly likes this power-up.
The mushroom in 64DS can't really be considered the mega mushroom, since the mega mushroom wasn't created as we know it until NSMB, which came out two years later.
@@grackleking6413 You go to that secret area in 1-2 (have to enter one of the pipes around halfway through the level and use a shell to break the blocks underneath the exit pipe). If you chase the mega mushroom in that second secret room to the opposite side, it gets stored when you grab it since there's no room underneath the other pipe
2:14 When that happen to me, I wondered "No, what do I do now?" so I started running, trying to perform a triple jump (I only could perform a double jump) and then I found the invisible block. I really thought "Thank God Nintendo knew this could happen and hid these invisible blocks"

I'm surprised you didn't bring up the commercials for this game. NSMB was the first 2D Mario in years and they hyped it up with this power up; the commercials started off with the first game in 1-1, but when Mario grabs the first mushroom, he goes mega and the game transforms into this.
@Manek Iridius The Minimushroom makes you vulnerable and you need to groundpound to kill enemies. I'll stick to the better version of the starman. Thanks
Have you ever considered that the Mega Mushroom could be a fermented version of an SMB1 mushroom Mario never picked up during that game, so it was just sitting there growing more powerful?
Last month i had a dream that they decided to update Mario Maker 2 AGAIN, and basically said they were adding "minor updates" since 3.0 was the last major one. Despite being "minor" they showed off a heck ton of stuff, like a Super Mario Land 2 skin for the SMW theme, and a freaking DOLPHIN suit. The final thing they showed was the MEGA MUSHROOM, and showed it off in the SMB style, and it looked gorgeous!

Mega Mini Mushroom: Why would you want this? It turns you into small mario, the one that appears when you get hit and you have a super mushroom. Mega Super Mushroom: Slightly larger Mega Mario. Mega Mega Mushroom: Do I have to explain this? It makes you twice as big.
I wasn't very good at the game when I was younger, so I'd often lose the Mega Mushroom halfway through the flagpole steps. Thank god for the playtesters that probably did the exact same thing, otherwise those hidden blocks would probably not be there. I'd love the Mega Mushroom to return, but in a less gimmicky form. In regular levels, it was basically useless. No stages were designed to take advantage of it and most stages were simply too small for you to use it, causing Mario to spit it back out because of the low ceiling. It was fantastic in Mario vs Luigi, though, especially that one stage made almost entirely out of bricks.
Although growing super giant is cool, it’s an OK power up for me. It’s just you destroy everything in your path, albeit cool, is in the end just holding down right. Plus, you could destroy pipes that you’ll need to access a star coin. Sure it gives you lives depending on how much you’ve destroyed, but do you really need to bulk up on lives?
