This one is very special to me -- not only is Joey one of the most influential drummers in metal but he is also a very humble human being. Back on the chair after a longer break due to a serious illness he's on tour again with VIMIC who will release their debut in a couple of weeks. So this talk is about never losing hope, never stopping to be curious, never thinking it is enough, never losing the love of music.

Breaks my heart to see this. What a talented and humble guy. He would have made a great music teacher, talking about the practicing and the dedication kids need to have to play. So sad. A guy that's literally my short height and could play with such ferocity and aggression like he was some super, strong muscular guy and the blast beats he did, they cannot be matched by anyone else. It's almost like he had Incredible Hulk strength. Amazed by him.

Man... what a terrible loss. I remember being 11 years old and into Mudvayne when they came out around 2000. My mom let me buy the first Slipknot record not long after that and I only bought it because the artwork looked scary to my young eyes haha. “Me Inside” was the first song I listened to and I will never forget the feeling I got when I heard that double bass.
Wildly improvisational, frenetic, and creative are the words that come to mind but that doesn’t do his playing justice. There’s a Latin term called Sui Generis that I love. It means “of its own kind.” That’s the only way I can accurately describe Joey’s drumming.

Ah, this isn’t gonna come out right, but here we go: God dayum, slipknot was a hug part of my junior high + life. I remember hearing Surfacing and that double bass part (you’ll know if it was the first time it struck you with possibilities) and he was a part of the “omg this could change metal” era and I remember it fondly. thank you for doing what you did. I’m not religious, but if anyone deserves peace, it’s you brother. Man, death is such a strange thing. Natural, but it feels so wrong. Life is weird. I’ve been trying not to drink recently (for the last year or so), but fuck me if I miss out on this. We will love and miss you and that hurt makes the memory worth remembering. So the hurt I will bear, and the tears I will shed, because for you, they are worth it. Thank you again, Joey. Man, taking responsibility for those we lose fucking hurts, but builds us up. Don’t wipe the tears away, they mean something. And they deserve to be seen.

Coming back and staying positive after what has happened to him for starters (i.e : losing one bandmate, getting an awful leg disease preventing you from drumming, being kicked out of your own successful band... need i say more ?) ?
Not to mention the killer drumming he has done through the years...

How about you show us how awesome you are ? Any videos of you playing out there online ?
      I'd love to see it.

Joey is my drum hero since late 90's. Love from Philippines, Mr. Joey. By the way, I have a Promark signatured of yours. I'm using it on my practice pad so it will not be damaged if I use it on my kit..

Im 55 and a drummer.... Im not really into his style of music , but maturity of what he is saying about how to start slowly and pay attention to the timing and not worry so much about speed and other technical aspects of playing the drums... I personally have more respect for drummers like Phil Rudd (AC/DC) then I have for your more technically proficient drummers.....dont get me wrong I grew up worshipping Neil Peart (among others) back in the day , but Joey pretty much said it all.....thank you...

I want to agree but in early Slipknot stuff he was pretty often off time (see Iowa and Slipknot) and it's my favorite drumming

IMHO Those 2 first albums had a fierce energy. Listen to Scissors closely and hear the way he does have timing. With so many instruments playing at the same time your brain can have a hard time focusing on one. If you get a chance listen to Skinny Puppy (Too Dark Park). Live Kevin the drummer was phenomenal. Their music is multi layered.
