Surprise that you missed the fact you can find the cake before the end credits. I haven't played it for a while, but there is a part after the test chambers where you can jump down the metal structure into the depths of the Aperture Science basement, where you are greet by lots of empty cores and the cake. Just remember to leave a portal open at the top cos you can't climb back up!
