Thank you Tayler - this is a great video. I am a trained clothing designer from many years ago and I also use affinity designer which I think is brilliant. BUT I've never put the two together and this video is great. I didn't realise you could but digital pattern blocks. What a game changer. I'd love to know how you make the pattern as a saleable item ready for download. Cheers

Thanks Karen, I have been super busy putting getting my house ready for sale over the last month or so but hoping to have more videos soon. Is there anything specific you would like to learn in the meantime?

Great to find your channel. You are talking everything about my journey. I too started my sewing journey in April 2021 and have learnt everything through YT. Have been interested in pattern making so I will investigate this software as I don’t have Adobe Subscription

Love love love what you are doing. Please keep going with these videos. I did a course Adobe Illustrator last year. But it is really too expensive. I already followed two of your videos and created a template. Yeahhhh!!! I keep going through your videos now .... thank you so much

Thank you so much for your kind words, I am desperately trying to find the time whilst looking after my 8 month old 🥹 are there any specific tutorials you would like to see?

You are very clever for starting with a block, thats what they do in fashion school. I stupidly drafted mine as a beginner, and I have to tell you, it wasn't worth it. Even if you draft it from scratch, you will always just modify it, you won't even remember the steps you took to make the block. It's largely just useless. I saw an article on fashion incubator where Kathleen says that it is rarely ever done in the industry

Thank you! I have never have proper training so I decided starting with a block seemed like the easiest way to go. Plus if you are making patterns to sell it makes sense to buy standard size blocks. I guess if you are only making patterns for yourself you could draft your own but to be honest it's alot of hassle! Thanks for watching.

OMG THANK YOU! 😍❤️👍 Yes please I would love to learn more about this app and tutorials. I've been meaning to make a start this week on this but cannot justify the $80AU a month for Adobe. I'm downloading Affinity tomorrow! Thanks!

The biggest barrier when it comes to pattern drafting for me is having to deal with giant pieces of paper and half way though decided I wanted to slash and spread the other way 🙃

Affinity is currently having a spring sale. Their 3 programs are all each half off! I had Designer from a sale last year, and just today , bought Publisher.

Very true! Everyone I know who uses it seems to somehow have a free version or a free license through their university. I don't know anyone who can realistically justify the monthly cost of a subscription to Adobe! I am brainstorming for more affinity videos today, is there anything specific you would like to see or would you be interested in watching me make something from scratch start to finish?

@@taylerfaye I personally think you should focus on just that aspect. PATTERN making with Affinity. Don't get caught up teaching too much Affinity unless it is vital and easy to explain. Maybe link to another persons video if it's an in-depth concept; there are tons of videos on Affinity already, but if you look around for pattern making, there is like, one other video. I told that uploader the same thing I am about to tell you. You are sitting on a untapped video market here, at least as far as my version of the youtube algorithm is concerned. I can't find very many videos describing using Affinity as a pattern making software. Could be a great thing for your channel. Here is a link to her video:
      ua-cam.com/video/LBkMeyxg7nU/v-deo.html
Making something "start to finish" would be amazing. Just make sure to cut fluff because I sense a long tutorial coming, and the way youtube is developing is preferring shorter videos. It's a fine balance between content and time. Include timestamps in description if YT doesn't let you make chapters in creator studio yet.
I don't sew clothing (yet?). I'm a leathercrafter, so for me, a simple pattern would be like a keychain. It has about one piece and a few holes. Then maybe if you are making a series, do more advanced ones later. Make sure to mention ways to make stitching holes (basically dotted lines which automatically resize depending where you put it in your design or how much you resize things). I personally want to be able to start in Affinity instead of turning a finished piece into digital, and from what I have seen on youtube, that seems to be the most requested. So definitely start with a start to finish IN AFFINITY, then later go into different abstracts like how to turn existing physical patterns into digital ones.
You mention A4 pages. YES. I remember going through this process myself and I hated it. Lots of wasted paper and toner, and I am still fuzzy. (You say A4 printer, and now I am second guessing myself if you need a specific printer for printing patterns or not... I wouldn't think so, I just loaded my printer with A4 paper and it seemed to print fine. I know that different countries have different size "standards" btw, not sure if you know that already but if you say "Oh yeah the standard size paper" that only means standard to where you are from, for the most part, so be careful with wording).
I hope that admittedly long response helps, and I brought to your attention another crafting area which needs your help which is broke leathercrafters like myself lol! Send me a message any time if you need more engagement, or if you want to bounce ideas. I am pretty interested in what you have to share.

@@BlackFoxLeather thanks alot for such an honest in depth response. It's very nice to hear exactly what you think is useful and what wouldn't be, especially as I'm assuming you found me through searching for pattern making in affinity. I realised what an unsaturated market it would be for videos of this kind when I posted it, and was testing the waters to see if it would be something I could maybe make a regular series of. It's done pretty well compared to my usual sewing vlogs so definitely think I need to take advantage of this niche I have found!
I think to start with I will do a short video on how to transfer the patterns onto different size PDFs (A4 for home printing and also A0 for larger printers) and also another video of a very simple pattern from start to finish.
I haven't transferred any physical patterns onto affinity yet, although I'm sure I could find an AI tutorial for that and translate it into affinity, which is how I've learnt most things!
Thanks again for taking the time to chat and offering advice, I look forward to hearing what you think about next videos I post on affinity. 😊

@@taylerfaye No problem. Can't wait to see more Affinity. I am no designer, so figuring this stuff out has been a pain (0 AI experience). Also, I don't know if you check your website mailbox often, but I sent you a message there you might want to check out. It isn't that big of deal but I guess it is my way of saying thank you for the Affinity tip.
