    This is possibly one of the most important tutorials that we have created! So, you’ve drafted a basic block using PatternLab, downloaded it as an ePattern, added a selection of different design elements using some of our great tutorials and you’re now ready to start making a toile. Great, but how do you get your pattern from Adobe illustrator on to physical paper? Simple… In this tutorial, we show you how to save your finished pattern as a Multipage PDF in a variety of sizes such as; US Letter, A4, A3, A2, A1 or A0. Once saved you can store, share, and print. We also show you how to lock your multipage PDF with a password so you can then sell your pattern online.

    Hello and thank you for your amazing site, products and content. I'm a huge fan! Quick question, do we need to add any bleed or crop marks before we send the files to the printers? I notice the lines go all the way to the end of the page so I'm not sure how it looks when printed or it automatically resizes to accommodate? I don't have a home printer so I just want to minimise room for error before I send off to a third-party for printing. Thanks!

    • @PatternLabLondon

      Sara Kelly thanks for your comment. The bleed and crop marks are already included on the PDF print templates. Simply add your pattern to the correct template and print. It's all set pre-setup. Enjoy!

    • @PatternLabLondon
      @PatternLabLondon  Рік тому

      You sure can, it might be a bit tricky doing it in Adobe illustrator. The best way would be to create your instructions and patterns as two separate PDF documents and then combine them in Adobe Acrobat. Simply google "combining PDF files in Acrobat" for a breakdown of how to do this.

  • @TayRez

    Thanks for this video!
    My question is, how to make the print ... is because there are some patterns that have a "print margin", and in the tutorial you taught us, does not contain this print margin!
    My second question is, how is it done to make the standards on graduation. I learned to do without the seam allowance, so I believe that in the digital field, this remains, am I right?
    I would like to thank you again, because these classes helped me to my knowledge! A big hug from Brazil!

    • @PatternLabLondon
      @PatternLabLondon  5 років тому +4

      Tay Rez The A4 print template has been sized so that the “print margin” has already been included. Simply add your pattern to the template. Save it as a PDF and print it in full scale. Do not scale to fit when printing. Your pattern will print full scale as a multi-page PDF with the margins included. Hopefully this answers your question?

    Thank you so much for this... great info and so clearly explained! really helpful. I'm just wondering one more thing though, is it possible to save a picture of the whole grid with the pattern layout on. This will help demonstrate how the A4 pages all fit together like a jigsaw.... but I want the one image on one A4 page to show how they all look one pieced together (basically what we see on the illustrator screen before saving as a PDF. (other PDF sewing patterns I have bought online tend to also include this layout preview page) Hope this makes sense... that would be really useful to know :) thank you.

    • @PatternLabLondon
      @PatternLabLondon  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Margaret, that's a great question and luckily it's relatively simple to do. Simply, take a screenshot of your pattern layout.
      MAC: You can do this on a mac by using these two keys in combination: "Command + 4" keys on your keyboard. This will give you a tool that allows you to click and drag the area you would want to take a screenshot of. The image will then be saved to your desktop.
      PC: You can do this on a PC by using these three keys in combination: "Shift, Command + 3". The image should then be saved to your desktop.
      You could then print this image. When printing select A4 paper and make sure that you select "Fit to page".
      I hope this helps?
      Thanks, Ralph

    • @PatternLabLondon
      @PatternLabLondon  3 роки тому

      Hi Falak and Sara! If you have a European printer please use the A4 Print templates. If you have a US printer, please use the US-Letter print templates. Also, be sure to check that you are printing at full scale, so 100% scale. Do not select the "Fit To Page" option. When it comes to printer borders, each printer is different and has different options, so please consult your printers user guide or do a google search on how to change those settings. Otherwise, we advise always setting your border to the smallest amount or use borderless printing.

    Thank you soooo much, I have been struggling with this for weeks. I make bags and have just started making my own designs. I managed to draft a pattern in Illustrator, but just couldn't figure out how to transfer it for printing. I thought I had managed it but had the dreaded 'missing strip' on the edges of each page, so your tutorial was wonderful. I found the one where you created your own template for printing - that was super hepful too. I only have one little issue, not down to you, probably the way I've created my design, but when I put my pattern pieces on my artboards, it covers my registration marks. How do I get my pattern pieces to be 'transparent' so I can see the registration marks through them??? Thanks for any help, I can prob manage without as it's my pattern and I know what/where it shoukd line up but if I send it to anyone else, they may need the registration marks. Thank you again, super helpful tutorials xxx

    • @PatternLabLondon
      @PatternLabLondon  6 місяців тому +1

      You could always create or add your registration marks to a different layer to your pattern within Adobe Illustrator. You can then arrange the layers ensuring that your registration marks sit on top of your pattern. Give it a shot!

    Heya, I just tried at home to print on A4 pages using your illustrator A4 template. But I kept getting borders on the printing. After trying to fix it on the printer and/or driver side, I realized your document artboards were setup to be at 17.98 cm width for 26.69 cm which was causing the issue (I was able to create my own artboards A4 size). I thought I'd let you know in case the issue lies on your side (but it could be a weird interference when opening up the illustrator file)

    • @PatternLabLondon
      @PatternLabLondon  Рік тому

      You can create an artboard to any size you like. Simply ask your printer what the maximum paper size they print, then create an artboard with those dimensions. You can then place your pattern within that art board. Make sure you leave around 2cm border on the inside of the entire artboard to make sure your pattern is printed within the printers print area. Finally save it as a PDF and send that to the printers. Ask them to ensure they do not fit to page but print 100% scale. I hope that helps!

      Black theme? I'm not sure what you mean. Can you not see the video? Possibly you have a streaming issue?

    Seems like the letter size PDF on your site is inaccurately sized, instead of 8.5x11 (21.59x27.94) is actually 7.3x9.815 (18.59x24.9301)

      That’s the correct size. The print templates are built with printer margins removed. We remove quite a bit to ensure they work on all make and model of printer. We do have a different tutorial that demonstrates how to make your own Print templates. You can specify any size of paper you wish :D

      @@PatternLabLondon Yeah I realized my error when trying to print it, regardless the tutorial was still very helpful in printing out my patterns

    What if you don't have a computer only a mobile phone? What then ?

    • @PatternLabLondon
      @PatternLabLondon  5 років тому +1

      cheryl serin unfortunately adobe illustrator isn’t available for mobile phones. Hopefully in the future. You could instead print your custom fitting PatternLab basics blocks in PDF format, print them on paper and then manually pattern cut using pattern master and pencil, whilst following the tutorial. The process is very similar.

    Is there a fee to get illustrator?

      Yes, it is a yearly subscription fee.

      Encoder Fashion is correct. It's a yearly or monthly fee but well worth it if you work with digital patterns often.

    Hi. Firstly thanks for the tutorials. They really helped me get through both pattern making and illustrator.
    I used the CS6 A4 template and for some reason the notches, the pattern lines, dont match. Like when I am putting together 2 pages, either the notches won't match or the lines won't.
    What could be the issue?

    • @PatternLabLondon
      @PatternLabLondon  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Madhuban,
      It's possible that you are not printing to the correct scale. Make sure you deselect "scale to fit" or ensure you are printing the pattern at 100% scale. Also, make sure you are using the correct page template. A4 should be used for Uk printers. US-letter should be used for US printers. They are very different when it comes to paper size. Also make sure your printer borders are set to small or minimum. I hope this helps resolve your issue.
