- Former communications minister Richard Alston has blasted journalist Laura Tingle for being “symptomatic of all that is wrong with the ABC” after she branded Australia as a “racist” country.
“She’s caught out making outrageously one-sided comments,” Mr Alston told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
“She is rightly rebuked by Justin Stevens but not a scintilla of apology or regret.”
Absolutely disgraceful, she is paid by taxpayers and has her snout in the trough and thinks she above everyone else. Sack Tingle now.

What I will say is that when Tingle gives her commentary there is a real chance that it is confirmatory with the facts. I no not know of an ABC journalist who said that he has something over 900 days to work on getting rid of Labor, as Murray did. I"m from The Bush and live in a remote area. I grew up with the TAXPAYER funded "Auntie" it was much loved, listened to and watched. Not any more. It was hijacked by the followers of the Head of the ABC's Special Projects Radio Department Allan Ashbolt (Do a search on him) and turned into a collective. Richard Alston, if people remember, ( remembering past events is not in the Coalition make up,) was a perpetual complainer about the ABC. However as soon as they took up the position they soon discovered what a rabble coalition policies were, and Alston condemned his own appointments. He is still on the same tack with Tingle who has plenty of journalistic experience and would find difficulty in finding anything constructive abourtCoalition policies.

Listening to this I am not sure where freedom of speech has been gone to. And I did not know that Ms Tingle was the face/brand of ABC News. I reckoned she was an Australian voter too. There are two observations to be made here.
1)
Politicians are public figures. From Aristotle to Peter Dutton. One could personally admire Aristotelian philosophy but not appreciate his politics ( Alexander, the great, was taught by Aristotle). Equally this logic applies to Dutton, that once had been quite cosy with the last administration in the US, the one now on trial.

As this conversation has started with free speech, no one has clarified to readers and listeners whether Laura Tingle was on a personal capacity or as a representative of ABC News in the event.
There is a huge difference in the role she was projecting to the audience, if the first is true, and that was never clarified.
Personally, I think I do not necessarily agree with Ms Tingle's assessment, but my way of comparing is personal.
From the US to the UK these are jurisdictions that are far more exposed to situations that could be framed by racism in the real estate industry. The New York Times has one story today from an 80-year-old lady who refused at first to sell a property based on race. Today in 2024 after Floyd and other cases, there are still Americans with money like that. But the US political and social story is different from Australia's.
The UK is also on another level of as the Commonwealth main entity, the older generation in England, used to discriminate mainland Europeans ( before BREXIT) which I feel has a resonance on Dutton's narrative and implications for listeners.
An intelligent politician as it would have been expected from Dutton could have replied along these lines, "in my administration I will make housing laws to avoid such injustice", for instance. It would have been clever.
So I think one needs to be clear on what kind of free speech one wishes to have in Australia.
Regarding the Dutton's of the world, they should know they are public figures, and get smarter on their answers which I doubt in his case it will ever occur.
I support Laura Tingle's freedom of speech, although I do not agree with her.
