    That high tuning sounds absolutely amazing, and I think this finish is my favorite finish in Yamaha's catalogue. For those of us that have dreams of playing stadium shows, I think the projection from this kit would do very well in that setting. But for now I think I'll stick with my Stage Custom, and maybe a Tour Custom in the future; always loving what Yamaha puts out!!

    Wow, I love everything about this kit, I had always liked Oak kits but never loved them, well this kit is a new animal. I am curious on how the weights in the kick drum work, obviously they reduce the resonance which is nice yet you would think that it would also reduce the volume. I play Tama Starclassic Bubingas and I love those but a lot of companies are stepping up their game, doing the science and there are so many uniquely designed amazing sounding kits out there now. When I first got my Tama Starclassic Maple I remember saying to myself I would never trade my kit for anything other then a DW, now every company has great sounding kits and a lot are Phenomenal. Now I just need to hit the lottery so I can buy them all. As usual great video, you guys are the best drum shop in the country, would love to visit one day.

    Just bought this exact kit. These are loud, as well as being everything commenters are saying. I traded in my original Custom Oaks, and my son has the Live Customs so I ‘ve done side by side comparison of the series, and you can hear the evolution from one to the next. The only thing I haven’t tried is the snare, but would love to play one.

      Ian Touzel Hi Ian. I don’t know what your needs are. I mean if you’re playing gigs, or in the recording studio or just play for fun. Unless you have a need for that little extra bass drum power I really don’t think there is enough difference to make it worthwhile. I bought this kit because I wanted my last kit to be a good one. I only play for myself as I’m retired. I would have been happy with my sons live oak kit. It sounds great. He also has the Tama Starclassic Bubinga kit that he uses for gigs, the oak kit is permanently set up for practice sessions. At this level one kit sounds different from the other, but not necessarily better. Cheers.

    I am a newbie drummer and this is my first kit since november 2023. I had some problem with tom tuning. I prefer low tuning as metal drumming fan. But it has a lot of distortion on low tuning on flour toms. Now I get used to medium tuning. This bass drum was scarry me at first time. It sounds like explosion. It makes me to do a room treatment. And I put there the biggest pillow, that i have. Now my taste is changed and I switched the big pillow to plaid. And I realy enjoy this huge sound. Now it's like a museum. I invite my friends drumers to demonstrate this bass drum, because I know, that they never heared nothing like this. And they said "duuuude... my breast are stressing, when you kick it".

    Great review again, guys. Thank you. Can you please tell me...between this and the new Tama Starclassic Birch/Walnut, which do you think had a more open sound with more sustain? Which one did you feel had a sweeter sound?

    • @adamfrost3722
      @adamfrost3722 5 років тому +1

      The tamas are much closer to the sound you're describing than these Yamahas. The Live Customs have greater projection and more focus.

    • @bcali7343
      @bcali7343 5 років тому +3

      I play Tama Starclassic Bubingas and have played many different Tama kits in the past 19 years. Tama drums are legendary for their big open sound with great sustain and the Birch/Walnut kit definitely delivers that better, but this kit is killer. I play all sorts of hard heavy music along with pop, country and I would choose this kit over the Tama Starclassic B/W. The sound that every company is focusing on right now including Tama is a drum that delivers a focused, clear, controlled sound that also has attack, power and presence. In my opinion a drum that is super open tends to be loud and have good resonance but when their is not enough focus you loose that snap you hear when the stick strikes the head plus the resonance muddies up the sound when playing faster groves especially the kick drum hence the reason drummers have been using countless amounts of dampening techniques since the 60’s and every metal drummer uses triggers or effects when recording and playing live. Using foam, tape, or w/e on the drum head kills the attack or snap and hinders the whole sound. Proper tuning is the largest factor in making a drum sound good, it is an art and takes lots of practice to do it by ear but still drummers have to use heads with dampening systems. Now companies are building the kits so well that you no longer need to add much if anything to get that sound which is exactly the way it should be. I remember being blown away when I assembled my Tama SC Bubinga kit, it was easier to tune, the kick drum sounded insane, very powerful yet focused and I hadn’t even ported the head on the front side. I remember being sad when I finally did port it because I knew it would loose some attack but actually it wasn’t much and for dampening I use Evans EC1s with the smaller foam ring that’s it. Anyway, take your time, do some research try to find a drum shop where you can play both kits (I know that’s almost impossible) I did a lot of online listening when I put my current kit together, it really sucks stores don’t offer drummers a chance to play different kits. If I were rich I would open a place filled with all the different mid grade to high end kits + cymbals from every manufacturer and people could come in pay a fee for however long then they could pick any drum/cymbal combination their hearts desired, that would be heaven on Earth.

    I own a set of custom live oaks and I totally love them , when I saw they revamped them I was like what ? I just bought these and they are great why did they redesign them ? It’s a bit like cars every 5 years or so the do a a new production offering to continue selling drums ! Are these the next great thing Depends what you like , i to be honest was a bit envious having just bought the old model and they come out with the next greatest thing , but after hearing them ? I’m very very happy with my last gen live custom oaks . The new ones look great , the bass drum does sound very good but I find the Toms too harsh compared to the bass drum , then when you tuned it higher the Toms sounded a bit nicer but then the bassdrum sounded too big for the higher tuning . I know guys , only my opinion but I can tell you these are not an improvement to the old generation imho. I think I’ll keep the old live oaks for years to come 👍🏻

    I love how the toms are very punchy without too much ring to them. Also, the bass drum is superb. However, I’m not too crazy about all the ringing coming from that snare because it makes it sound cheap as shit! A decent snare needs to have a sharp CRACK with NO RINGING to it! This is super important because the snare is the centerpiece of sound for any set of drums you might buy.

    • @nathanielking7481
      @nathanielking7481 2 роки тому +1

      Some moongel solves that problem nicely. I know a lot of people want to keep drums wide open but sometimes you gotta help a drum out a little bit to achieve the best possible sonic characteristics. In a mic’d situation it pays to dampen the drums anyways regardless of your tuning preference or expertise. Most metal snare drums ring for days but the second you put a gel on them they crack way harder than any wood drum will. Just my 2 cents

      Not sure if it helps but the 9500 direct drive has been my go to for years, prior to that a flying dragon DD pedal. I’ve used just about every pedal on the market and the Yamaha stays my favorite. The only other pedals I own/use are a Mapex falcon. Can’t say enough great things on the Yamaha. Prefer it to many more expensive pedals from Trick, Axis, DW, Pearl, etc.

    If anyone wondering the difference between this and the live custom. I have both. Same size. Same heads. The toms and the floor sound exactly the same. The reason they came up with the hybrid was that yamaha needed a reason to raise the price on the kit because their where losing money....And thats from yamaha themself.
    Theres a difference in the low end of the bass drum. But common yamaha, put the weights for the lugs available for the live custom

      I have a live custom huge kit, 8-10-12-14-16-18 -22 ask my local drumshop to buy the weight, told me not available, you need to buy the new drum..... yeah right... Yamaha, make them available, do it for the buyer . They will make money. And you are right, every live custom kit coming out of the factory cost Yamaha money someone told me it was just to make the poi t that the new factory in China could make good drums.

    My next kit is going to be these or the Recording Customs. Can anyone give me an idea of the difference in sound between the two kits? From the videos I've seen, it seems that the Live Custom Hybrid Oak kick is going to be have more punch and low end than the Recording Customs. Regarding the toms, the Hybrids seem to have a little less warmth, but more articulation and clarity than the Recording Customs. Any insight here would be greatly appreciated!

    • @drumcenternh
      @drumcenternh  4 роки тому +3

      The Live Customs have a little more volume, attack, tuning range, and the kick drum is the best, period. Tama toms have a little more natural bottom end, the hardware holds it's own, and the finish options are better. Build quality goes to Yamaha Live Custom. There...didn't mention price once! I've noticed in many drum demo videos that rack toms often have a clear note to them and the bigger one is lower than the smaller, but floor toms often have no note -- it's just a thud. You'd expect them to have another lower note than the bigger rack tom, but often they don't. Why is that? Is it because hanging them lets them resonate more than sitting them on a stand on the floor?

    • @drumcenternh
      @drumcenternh  5 років тому

      Lots and lots of contributing factors. But a lot of it comes down to the tuning. Often times when you tune something low, the sustain is shortened. Another thing to note is that in a recording situation, you really don't want a floor tom to sustain forever. It may sound good on it's own, but with the rest of the kit it can be very overbearing and it makes it hard to hear what else is going on. I hope this makes sense.
