I had a swiss sheperd for 11 years and she was none of the things being named here. She was the perfect dog, placid, loving, gentle, willing to please, best companion, low on food and kept excellent weight, never naughty like other dog breeds puppies, I can just say good things about swiss shepard, they are much easier dog to have then german shepards for sure

Thank you for providing this information as I am thinking about having another dog after my beloved border collie died of cancer aged 12 early this year. I am missing a fury companion and the daily exercise they bring. I was looking at a GSD or Swiss Shepherd but was a bit alarmed by this vlogs statement about them being a nervous breed.
Was your dog a pure bred with KC papers?

We have a young female WSS in an apartment, and she's honestly the best dog I've ever had. The trainer we're working with says shes the best behaved shepherd type breed he's ever met. We take her outside for walks and to play in the dog park every day. She is very social and LOVES meeting new people, she is sweet and affectionate with kids, and plays very well with other dogs. The only thing we're having some trouble with is her barking excitedly when she sees a dog she wants to play with, but we are being very intentional with her training, and she's starting to get better. Just today she was around probably 7 dogs all at once, and she didnt bark. She's a little over a year old, so she's still a puppy technically. We got her when she was 9 weeks old, and never had any problems. Even the teething phase wasn't bad. She understood when we took something away and replaced it with a chew toy, that we didn't want her to chew on that thing. She never does the same wrong thing twice (except barking). She is very in tune with the emotions around her, and when I have migrains, she is noticeably calm and gentle, and even wags her tail softly. I'm pretty obsessed with her and I hope to train her to be my service dog.

The apartment living is incorrect, I have a black gsd who lives happily with me in my apartment with the correct day to day lifestyle. Runs the treadmill twice a day & goes hiking & creaking every other day with me. My apartment complex also has a big yard where she is able to run freely with awesome recall. & now I’m getting a white Swiss shepherd in 1 more week :) it’s all in the owners to make sure these dogs are living an awesome life.

I have a border collie and a white swiss shepherd in an apartment and they get exercised way more than many dogs living in the yard that I know. Except for 1 - 2 rest days a week, we basically only sleep at the apartment and spend the rest of the time outside. Me and my fiancee each take one dog and we either have herding lessons (currently unavailable for around a month though as the owner of the sheep is out of the country, can´t wait to get them back to work), agility or their absolute favorite - canicross and bikejoring. During rest days, they get mental stimulation toys.

We have a 105lb WSS for 9 years now she is one of the best dogs we have owned. We have had only one gastro problem that was when she ate a whole wild rabbit. We have a fenced one & quarter acres she can run in a rural setting in western Wash, with lots of wildlife. She now chases the rabbits but wont catch them! She will occasionally dig up a mole but won't ever try and eat one so she is smart! She just loves all our grandkids and is very gentle , loves going for rides, and walks. She does shed a lot but I take her to the groomers twice a year spring and fall, and do my best to comb her out with special grooming rakes and vacuum a lot! Also Daisy is not a barker, very rarely will she bark...mostly when 5pm roles around and she lets you know it is dinner time! We feed her a good brand, weight control dog Kibble. She has adoring fans when we are out in public and is friendly with everyone.

Great video. Our White Swiss Shepherd is 5 years-old and we studied the breed before choosing him. We knew these facts and prepared to meet the requirements, but we struggled with him during the pandemic. We live in a house, but he needs to walk outside every day and we could not go out during the lockdown. He destroyed our lawn. Twice. Despite that, he is a wonderful dog, great with children and other dogs. Our Kal-El is the goodest boy!

      Bonjour

This video is SPOT ON. I adopted a Swiss white Shepard and the vet guessed he was 3-4 years old. He’d been dumped in a neighborhood and the owners drove off. He was in bad shape and completely untrained when I took him home. He has no spatial awareness, jumps up constantly, surfs all the counters for food, gives me hard love nips when I’m bent over that leave marks, head-butts me out of nowhere when I’m doing yoga, can open doors on his own, gets constant ear infections, has a sensitive tummy, and his hair gets EVERYWHERE. That said, he’s a dear boy who deserves the huge yard I have for him, the brushings I give so his glossy coat shines, the cooked meals I make him, the pack of 3 other dogs that keep him company, and the vet visits that keep him out of ear pain. I love him dearly. He makes me laugh. He’s curious, athletic, whip smart, and fearless. He’s protective of our family and our property. He tries his very best to listen and loves to learn & play games. He’s my Velcro baby and loves being at my side which I adore. I’ve had him for over 4 years now and it was the best decision to provide him a forever home. My advice is to have a decent yard, be willing to train avidly, invest in round knobs on all doors, practice a lot of patience, and expand your sense of humor. If you’re willing to put the work in, they really are a wonderful breed.

We love our Berger Blanc Swiss Shepherd, Tayoni! Researched the breed before committing and have loved her dearly over these 10.5 years.
Video is very accurate in terms of high play drive and need for activity. Also about shedding.
I wonder if the “gastro issues “ are what we encountered. We learned early on she has a fast hot metabolism and her poops were often runny. The vet wasn’t worried about it, said it was the breed. Our son affectionately called her “ten-per” cuz she’d continuously poop loose poops when we’d go on our daily 2-3 hour hikes. We finally learned recently to put food grade psyllium in with her kibble to stiffen her poops enough to be able to pick them up now that she’s 10 and we’re in a neighborhood. As she’s aged she has very mild arthritis - we give her a glucosamine supplement called Dasaquin.
Btw- in our family’s experience having owned many German Shepherds, one w/ a Belgian Malinois mix, while there are of course many similarities, there’s a notable difference between German Shepherds, depending on the particular breed - and Swiss Shepherds. Mostly due to not having the aggressive protective instinct tho they have strong desire to be close to the pack. And though we’ve never had a White German Shepherd I wonder if there’s also a difference btwn WGS and Swiss Shepherd? I suspect so.

Absolutly true. The breed is also known to hide pain better than other sheaperds, as well as not act out so much frustration added their strong need to please...giving owners the false sense that the dog is ok living a lazy life at an apartment with litle exercise. Many have gastro issues, joint issues due to slipery floors but dont show the discomfort until its too late

They don't need as much exercise as it sounds. After my Finnish Lapphund (herding dog, smart like a Border Collie) I wanted a somewhat similar dog but bigger with whom I can do long long walks and train a lot, especially tricks just as I used to. The Swiss Shepherd sounded exactly like that. Well, he is sweet and likes to learn and please but it's nothing compared to what I was expecting/hoping to get. They have totally standard needs, nothing extreme. Walks with 2-3 hours and 30min mental stimulation/training is more than enough, so just exactly the standard for dogs. Mine loves walks but sleeps all day at home and is relaxed.
Also the shedding is nothing compared with my Akita and they rarely need grooming. I comb mine once a months and his fur looks pretty.
The only thing that is a bit challenging to train is his prey drive for any moving wild animal. He is great with my cats and doesn't even want to kill prey animals but to chase them which is not acceptable. He is a little over a year now, obedient and well mannered but I keep him on a long lead until he is really reliable around fast moving animals

    • @Astlaus
      @Astlaus 26 днів тому

It's more about keeping their mind occupied. Long walks don't do that much for them.

    • @teddytube4732

We also had our Swiss Shepherd chasing deer when we lived in the mountains. She was about 2 years old at the time. We learned to anticipate her alert signal and were able to train her in a very short period of time to leave them alone. They would walk up to her within 20 feet and she’d leave them alone.
Sounds like you provide your dog with a wonderful life with all those walks and training!

Same! Plus, I read that the average house size in the UK is like 800sqft, and they still have dogs, so why should that stop us? No matter how big your house is, any dog still needs walks and outside exercise. Inside the house is just a den to them.

We have one in an apartment also, and she is an angel. Of course we supervised her as a puppy any time she was outside of her pen, so she never really had the chance to do anything destructive. We take her outside for walks or to play at the dog park everyday. She does amazing with my 3 kids and loves playing with other dogs. She's a velcro dog and follows us everywhere. Being in an apartment has never really been a problem because we take her outside so much, and no matter how big your house is, any dog still needs outside exercise.

We adopted one from Lebanon and while he’s the sweetest boy ever his prey drive is extremely high given he was a street dog. Our last dog that was a stray was decent with our cats but Van Gogh (our Swiss shepherd) is the opposite he one time got my cat in his mouth! We have only had him for a year and have a long way to go to train him out of this behaviour. Luckily we live in a home where we have enough room for our cats to live safely on the second floor away from him while we still is being trained. He definitely has separation anxiety but we are working on it!

This is total BS. We have had a white shepherd for 5 years now and she's an inseparable part of our family; she's *funny*, active, smart, extremely social, lacks the traits mentioned (except for fur - most dogs have fur). In short, she gives us nothing but joy. I suggest the Dogs Now folks do research on actual ownership instead of theory before dissing an entire breed.

I found one in a beach and adoped. Yes, recurrent ear infection, dermatitis that took some time to fix using expensive shampoos and later only babys shampoos. Hip displasya and arthrites cost a lot of medicines given several times a day, phisyotherapy. Natural food makes an enourmous difference in their helth, raw as their are young and cooked as they get old. Intermitent gastrointerites requires probiotics, an average of vet visits every 6 months with ultrasonds and antibiotics and blood work, specially as they age.
All worth it! Mine is turning 16. I have had duzens of working germans sheaperds before and this bread is quite different regarding health issues, temperament, energy level...but just as clingy, actually more if its the only dog in the home (then it will need to stay in doors as weel).
Easier to train (as long as its not for full guard), easier to control, if you have had previous experience with large energetic breeds. If not hire a basic good quality trainer and follow their instructions seriously cause its money well as results will last decades.
Just make sure to save money regularly for vet visits, exams and meds. They are awsome companions, calmer, smart, loving animals.

Unfortunately, even though they were fed appropriate diet (not kibble), and had excellent Vet care, I was home, and they didn't have to stay home alone for hours, they all had different health problems. We bought them from two different breeders. The first one, our sweet girl died of heart failure when she was 8 years old, at home. She had spine surgery two years before that. Second one, my sweet boy, had to be helped over the rainbow at 7 years old, he could no longer walk and was on medications for years. He also had surgeries. The third, our sweet girl was 7 years old, died of cancer and a brain tumor, and my other sweet boy he got to be 11 years old but also died of heart failure.

In having one of these lovely animals for around 5 yrs - Here's some observations. A) They shed like nothing that has ever lived. Seriously - If keeping your Couch - Hallway - jeans - Shoes - Duvet - Hoover Pipes - All brushes you have ever owned etc - Clean of White Dog hair - Then think again - yes its a pain - yes its a draw back ( and a big one to be honest ) Our standard of what is @Clean@ and acceptable VS @ more hoovering & brushing - has certainly dropped regards WSS - but in relation to their character - affection & comraderie - its quickly out weighed. B ) Do NOT let these dogs stay in a room / apartment / House - without some sort of Music - TV playing in the back gorund ( Those MASSIVE ears arent Ornaments ) - or their stimuli & over compensated SUPER Hearing will send them in anxiety mode - until at least 3-4yrs old or longer. These dogs are naturally territorial If you have a Garden to let them roam in and call their own - Socially - If you interoperate regularly with other dogs during walks etc - They are Social - great dogs to walks - They will tell you if some thing that isnt supposed to be around - walks by. C) They can eat. LOTS - If you let them - So less & often seems a better approach feeding wise - 4/5 smaller meals a day - as opposed to 2 big bowls - D) Take everything Ive written with a pinch of Salt & go read about how to make the most with these superb Companions.

    • @allymac68
      @allymac68 6 місяців тому

@FionaHedges I'm afraid I couldn't answer that and call it informed. A situation like that, is independent of supposition. Your own terriers might go in defence mise etc, I'd suggest if you have a specific dog in mind, to let them meet outside etc, before thinking about bringing it home to your own space and dogs.. ..if your getting one as a pup , I'd suggest as libg as your terriers are still the energetic type and not seniors....a Gws pup is a handful - but using treats and nibbles, these dogs are well trainable - they are very food driven, so u can get their attention quick. I have a Polish Scenthhound along side the GWS , who was 4 yrs senior, and now they are still best friends.
