You don't have to explain yourself to all those negative comments, You never said that you know everything, mate you do a very good job, i know how hard it can be to work on a car in your driveway. I do it all the time and the problems that go with it It can be a right pain sometimes when things go wrong but that feeling when the job is done, nothing like it .keep up the good work. from all here in Ireland keep them videos rolling.

@@richardcurran2786 and the thing is its not like he didnt mention atleast twice in the previous videos that his mates doing the job on a budget yet ppl still want to comment in the ideal world where everyone had loads and loads of money noone would need to "cut corners" but in this day and age where every cent/penny counts MOST of us have to put other priorities before our vehicles unfortunately asmuch as they are such a crucial part of our lives

Recently got quoted 540 quid for pads n disks on an 05 meriva from Halfords got the parts from eurocp for about a ton same breaks same pads saved over 400 quid, with some balls and basic tools and the help of guys like you we can all save money :) keep it up, I had no interest in the egr pipe install on the St but still needed up watching it till the end 😑 so your doing summin right

Lowering the car wouldn't put a roll bar link under any more stress mate because the bar isnt fixed between them. What puts them under stress is one wheel being under a different load to the other. Ie when cornering which is what they are designed for.

I think most of the time, the majority of people who watch your content know the score... it’s just they don’t tend to comment! Of course it was a cheap job to get it back up and running but it was done ‘properly’ in terms of doing it in the best way possible with the time/cost constraints. Look at it another way... you could stick a £45 gasket set in at least 10 times for the price of a garage to do the job 100% correctly. That Astra will probably be history by the time it needs doing again. Keeping cheap nuggets on the road is why I subscribe to your channel. Keep up the great work 👍

Your videos cover perfectly what normal guys, like me, have to do on their old cars, on the drive, with no lift. And I don't have my neighbours brick wall stuck up my backside like you do. Very well said at the end mate! I’m a mechanic myself and completely understand you, customers are what effects the sort of work you do. Whether they can afford it or need the car back on the road ASAP or something like that. Also One little tip I can give you with drop links is if the nuts are nyloc, once they’re tight I put a little coat of copper grease on the threads and in the hex bit just so when someone comes to do it again they can clean the threads off and buzz them off nicely!

Your mate is lucky to have a friend like you that can help and so credit to you it’s a good point you make about people’s individual budgets and circumstances, and at the end of the day, the level of work needed would have probably seen that car sent over the bridge if it had have to have been done at a garage.

when ur taking old droplinks and replacing them u can use the impact gun and get a long bar and put pressure between the strut and the droplink so the balljoint wont spin saves a bit of time handy to know because sometimes the torx and hex strips out or a small vicegrips on the balljoint and use the impact works if theres no slot of the spanner on the back

I wouldn't entertain any negative comments, today 1st May 2020 was 1st time watching you and so far i find what you say makes sense. Obviously would prefer the how to do things videos but even the head gasket video is still full of useful knowledge for people that don't want ripped off etc. I was told that if my head gasket went i would be cheaper buying new car as engines these days are cheaply made and the amount of time involved in stripping down, cleaning, rebuilding etc would go into over the £1k mark. So stuff what the negatives are and continue to do what your doing as its helpful to know someone out there can actually do this job without killing folks pockets. Look forward to next video

Good job, The plastic ones are oem for the astra, you could have used the buzz gun if it was on full speed to remove the nuts.
Astras wheel torque is 110nm, 120 isn't much higher but could pull the threads in the hub

The metal droplinks on the mk5 Astra are actually for the IDS suspension and have a kink in them to get around the modules in the strut.
The plastic ones are decent enough and wear just as quick as the metal ones... the only downside as you’ve seen is they can snap, but it’s rare.

You're more brave than I would be tackling a modern engine I have a Zafira 2.2litre I wouldn't know where to start with that one👍.

Decent mole grips clamped onto the ball joint works well usually, and it means you can use the impact to undo the nut!

Also if you've got one end out you can sometimes just crank the arm to jam the remaining ball joint and then undo the nut ;)

The world is full of armchair critics - best advice is to ignore them. You walk the walk as well as talk the talk. That makes you a top contributor. Keep it up.

Fair play to you. Don’t listen to all the negative comments. You got a mates car back up and running which is the best possible for the money they can afford. If that’s not value for money then I don’t know what is. Keep up the good work mate.

I've never had to do it but you can always try and grip the ball joint from behind with the mole grips if it spins, might be enough for the impact to buzz it off.
Don't pay attention to the trolls mate. You put about as much work into the car as its worth. Maybe i would have advised getting a timing belt kit or putting some supermarket oil in it too but its a 54 plate Vauxhall with over 100,000 miles. It will be on its way to the scrapyard in a few years at most for one reason or another. It's good you helped your mate out, you have to do these jobs sometimes. Keep an eye on it and it if the repair hasn't been 100% then put a bottle of stop leak or whatever in it. It was waaaaaay beyond that before.

If you do find an old hex centre then dig out fully all dirt and rust then put the hex tool into an old rubber glove finger tip which will give a good grip fit.

Great videos, your doing exactly what is necessary to get the car working to the best of affordability, and without risking safety, these videos are the important ones, cos they show a DIY'er what can be possible without needing ultra expensive tooling, or an NCQ level 3 in car mechanics, in 2020 being more thrifty will be more important than ever, as the general cost of living increasingly rises, and the motorist is hit the worst with more ULEZ zones, congestion charges and toll road increases, changes in MoT testing with higher stricter standards, hybrid 'dealer only' repaired vehicles, higher increases in insurance renewals, tax on petrol increases, higher parking zone charges...and on and on, Savage Garage keep doing what your doing cos your doing it well as your channel name implies only the most resourceful survive..thank you

great vid. you're right about spending money on an old car. saying that i found a 30yr old landrover and rebuilt it from the ground up. that included learning to weld etc.looking forward to seeing more vids. ive always worked on my own cars, even the new ones. why waste lots of money on stealership prices. if you stumble across a recent audi a5 tdi that needs its cam belt changing feel free to post it. lol. good luck with your vids. i'll be watching.

I did these on my wifes Astra H over christmas. They were the allenkey type. The replacements from ECP were also plastic. But thats what GM fit from the factory so.....
The ones on her car were knocking really badly. Sounded like a rock flapping around in the wheelarch !. I think she hits speedbumps too hard, so these ARB drop links get a real hard time.

Don't be surprised if you have to do them again soon, I brought moog plastic arb links for my zafira, within 6 weeks they were rattling worse than before, this happened 3 times so I replaced again for the metal ones and never had a problem since

Great video. Trust me, don't address the negative comments anymore. You will never ever, ever, ever make those people happy. Just do your thing and concentrate on the people that like what you do. You can do everything right and they will still talk nonsense. Just do your thing and pretend they don't exist and you will be happier.

I always find your channel really knowledgeable, I also like that when it’s been a hard or difficult job which has been challenging you admit it. If we wanted to see F1 mechanics I’m sure we could find them on UA-cam. To be honest I believe we’re all just happy with watching your projects tick along and keen to see what you’re going to be up to next. No need to explain yourself to anyone, your regular viewers knew you were doing your mate a turn by fixing his wheels on the cheep to resolve his problem no frills. Pls keep up the content it’s appreciated. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Please Do film the oil change, I need to do one on my MK5 Astra.
Never done one on a Vauxhall before but I assume its the same as a Ford or Citroen.
As for the negative comments, you will always get someone sitting there watching with their face screwed up like they are chewing a wasp.
Keep up the good work pal.

If you’re removing to replace you can just use a pair of mole grips on the shaft to stop it spinning as you don’t have to worry about preserving the threads etc.
