  • A day of training....and "training" around Six Flags Over Texas getting ready for the 2016 season. A lot of work was done on the General Sam Houston during the off season as usual, but this year she got a new paint job and she's looking better than ever. So come join the SFTRR crew for "Spring Training".

    Been a brakeman/conductor on three different shortlines and just recently got hired on with a class one of my area, while watching this. Got only three months now until I ship off to the hotel of my location for my own start of training.

    I was a fireman on the train during the Spring and Summer of 1996. I qualified as engineer for the Fall that year. Since then I have been a conductor and engineer for two Class 1 railroads and now I'm a train dispatcher for the largest Class 1 railroad. With that said, being a fireman and engineer at Six Flags was the best railroad job I ever had. Its been a wild career ride over the last 22 years but the beginning was the most fun.

    Had the privilege of "firing" on the General Sam Houston and the Mirabeau B. Lamar for some great engineers who sat in that right seat back in the 1966 & '67 seasons. More fun and much better pay than on the Log Flume and as a "CORNductor" my first couple seasons ('64-'65). This video production is extremely well done. So many improvements on the Railroad since "the olden days". Need I say, we left tracks for you to follow?! (uh, that'd be CORNductor speak.) ;-)

      Bob Greene thank you for the kind words. I also got to fire for one of those great guys like you....Charlie Patton back in 1980. I absolutely love running these locomotives.

      Bob...I speak Cornductor very well! Did my first "go-round" in the late 70's early 80's as conductor / fireman. Then time finally allowed me to return to the railroad to have some fun and engineer for the first time back in 2014. I'm still there having more fun than I can shake an oil stick at!

      TexasRailfan21 - just the two on the engines. Bit of trivia for you. If you ride the Runaway Mine Train, the whistle that sounds as you're going up the second lift hill, is the original whistle that was on The Lydia (Patton).

    Did they change the whistle on the GSH? The one in this video seems to have more of a growl and different pitch level than what she has run in prior seasons.

    • @DustyWingsProductions
      @DustyWingsProductions  8 років тому +1

      No change. It's all in the engineer. If he doesn't quite open it up all the way or if he does..... I can only assume that maybe weather conditions could play a role in how it sounds. I'll have to research that.

  • @TexasRailfan21-RailfanRyan

    Are they planning to upgrade the General Sam Houston by installing sanders to prevent wheel slip?? Because the Charlie Jefferson Patton has sanders but the General Sam Houston doesn't

    • @DustyWingsProductions

      TexasRailfan21 - it has a sander... just not connected. We do have a specialized sander on it though...... it's called the fireman. 😁

    is there a name for the sheet of metal behind the whistle I know it's to make the whistle quieter but what's it called?

    • @DustyWingsProductions
      @DustyWingsProductions  8 років тому +1

      +TexasRailfan21 I actually asked one of our mechanics about that earlier this year. I thought it was to direct the sound outward, but I found it's actually there to keep the engineer from getting sprayed in the face with water/steam. I didn't ask if it actually had a name. I'll have to find out.

      Putting the whistle up on top of the dome where it belongs would help. I have only seen larger engines get away with them there because of a taller dome.

      +Railfan Productions By Texas Railfankid To kinda give you an idea of where everything is... the 4:44 shot is right by Flume I & 2 along the outside of the track... not accessible to guests like Jadon stated in his reply. The 5:35 shot is coming around the corner and approaching the Johnson Creek Station and you should be able to get a shot like that. You just gotta be ready and listen for the blind curve whistle to know when the train is coming around the bend. You can get a shot of it going into the tunnel, but it will have to be from above and behind... the shot I got was just before Hobo Hill... also inaccessible to guests. I'm glad you like the video. Two of my favorite things.... video productions... and my railroad!

    About how long does the engine take to warm up? I would imagine it takes a few hours to get that much water boiling.

    • @DustyWingsProductions
      @DustyWingsProductions  3 роки тому

      Good question! You gotta remember these are not very large locomotives. If they are cold, it takes about an hour give or take a few minutes on either end. The red H.K. Porter gets hotter a little quicker due to it being smaller than the green Dickson ALCO.

      @@DustyWingsProductions True, plus I would imagine being oil burning its not like you have to build a a fire and wait for the coals to get red hot. So is it filled with water in the morning and that lasts all day? Or does it have to be refilled during park hours? Sorry to bombard you with questions... and thank you for responding!

      @@jbastible82 Feel free to ask away! The boiler is filled each night at shut down so its ready to go the next day as well as the tender. Water is injected into the boiler pretty much all day and as a result, we go through about 100 - 150 gallons of water every couple of hours. We stop and fill the tenders and oil the locomotives every two hours.

    • @jbastible82
      @jbastible82 3 роки тому

      @@DustyWingsProductions last one I promise!!!! When yall do the refill during the day, do you have to take the engine to a maintanace facility or is is something that is done at one of the two stations?

      Yes, The people at Six Flags know this. I was a Fireman on the trains at Six Flags in 1980 and we had to disconnect the Engine and tender from the passenger cars I think about every 2 or 3 hours and go to the area by the Roundhouse to Blow the Steam. I forgot the official term for this, but it is done.

Can I reach out to someone currently working on the train who would know how to help me get a job there? Thanks in advance.
