2020 RAM 1500 EcoDiesel First Drive | Best 1/2 Ton Diesel?

  • Looking for the best 1/2 ton tow rig in America? Look no farther than the RAM 1500 with the third generation 3.0L EcoDiesel engine. With a towing capacity of 12,560 pounds, RAM has rated their diesel higher than the 1/2 ton diesel options from Ford or Chevy. Combine that with quite simply the best pickup interior in America and you have a winner in my book. Sweetening the deal, the diesel is available in all trims including the base Tradesman trim giving more folks access to RAM's best tow-engine.

      The inline design is superior to the V6 design, my only issue with GM is that they made their engine block of aluminum and their cylinders are aluminum as well and to top it off they are using timing belts ... It will be a toss-up between this and the Toyota Tundra coming out in 2021.
    30+ mpg is impressive in a truck.
    Thanks for the review Alex.

    Until the epa nerfbats this one like they did the last one
    Also an error with your payload math. The ratings account for a 150lb driver, so adding 2 200lb people would take 250lbs off, not 400lbs

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  5 років тому +7

      RAM, Chevy and ford do not account for a driver in their numbers. The statement from FCA for instance reads:
      “The payload of a vehicle is defined as the allowable load weight a truck can carry, including the weight of the driver, all passengers, options and cargo".

    Not sure that you understand how Diesel engines work, you get less engine braking in a diesel because it doesn't have any intake restrictions. Unlike a gasoline engine. Also, that new 3 L diesel has a slightly lower compression ratio than the second generation.

    • @johncanalese588
      @johncanalese588 5 років тому

      What are these “intake restrictions” that exist on a gasoline engine that aren’t on a four stroke Diesel engine? FYI Diesel engines still have a higher compression ratio than gasoline engines and therefore should afford more engine braking - all things being equal, like cylinder volumetric capacity.

    • @kevinbarry71
      @kevinbarry71 5 років тому

      John Canalese it's called a throttle. Unless it is wide open, you have quite an intake restriction on a gasoline engine. As for compression ratio, yes, any idiot knows diesel engines have a higher one. However, that doesn't help you an engine braking. Because, although it takes more energy to compress the air in a diesel engine, unless you have a firing stroke, you get all that energy right back when the piston goes back down. This is what happens off throttle. The reason a gasoline engine gives you engine braking, is, because the throttle is closed almost completely that's strangling the air coming into the engine. There is such a thing called compression braking, however it is only on large commercial vehicles, not on consumer diesel engines. I suggest you go back and try to learn a little bit more than extreme basics.

    FCA messed up when they let Nissan get that smaller Cummins. The old Ecodiesel was not very reliable and had many issues with it resulting in a short life span.

      @KevinSmith-qi5yn 5 років тому

      The point of the Ecodiesel is the mpg. The 5.0L V8 in the Titan XD gets like 15 MPG. It's a V8 so it's not as reliable as the inline 6.

    GM Diesel - Much quicker off the line, way less turbo lag. Better design by having an I6 but a big flaw with having a timing belt that needs to be changed at 150,000 miles. Also better MPG but smaller tank so less range. Also has an exhaust brake. But lower tow ratings by a few thousand pounds.
    Ram Diesel - Better torque. Has a lifetime timing chain so less major maintenance. Worse MPG and MAJOR turbo lag. Also, the last gen diesel had major reliability issues that may or may not have been corrected in this new gen diesel. No exhaust brake but higher tow ratings.
    Why can't there ever be a clear cut choice? So many trade-offs it makes it hard to choose which one to go with.

    Great job with the review as always, one question that I have not been able to find is rams max towing is 12,5xx, chevys is 9300. But the chevys was 9300 on 4wd trucks right? So what's the max tow on a ram 4wd???

      So I have had two first gen and 2nd gen . The reason for issues is lack of maintenance. They need more lubrication in the diesel that they sell now a days. If you run some every tank you can go tons of miles. First one had 470 000 on it. This one has 170 000 on it. So far it is good will keep you posted

    I have a 2015 Ecodiesel. Currently 170,000 miles. The engine parts mentioned here are NOT the ones I've had problems with. What have they done with the EGR cooler, Oil cooler, camshaft sprockets (previously held in place with friction discs. They are NOT captured on the camshaft) and water pump "hose" mess that's going on under the intake to make them more reliable?
    The body of this truck and interior are beautiful.
    I'm begging anyone looking at a new diesel PLEASE do not own one of these outside the factory warranty.

    I towed a 6500 lbs - 30ft RV with a 2016 Ecodiesel Limited with air suspension fro approx 10,000 miles. Excellent overall, very good torque and fuel economy. The small payload was the reason for selling but eyeing the new one now. Using an older F-150 with the 5.0 gas. Horrible fuel economy, high revs all the time

    CA-17 has improved over the years. When I first drove it in 1973. It was called the "Death road." Today foolish people act like it is a go-cart track. Up until recently, my daughter and her family had a home in Felton on CA-9. Being the good granpa, I visited frequently. My 2016 Ram 1500 Quadcab 4wd 3.92 ratio Ecodiesel does pretty good. But I do go below the car speed limit, and above the Truck speed limit. The car speed limit was recently lowered some.
    The VGT turbo on both the Ecodiesel and the Cummins 6.7L is the engine brake. In tow/haul mode, the Ecodiesel can do okay. My wife's 2018 Ram 2500 Crewcab 4wd 3.42 ratio Cummins is an absolute beast going up or down the hill.
    I am tempted to buy the new Ecodiesel for the increased payload. The new trucks 2,000# payload beats my trucks 1,225# payload.
    A Rebel with another 2" of lift, 35" tires, and 4.56 ratio. Would work very well with the Ecodiesel.
    Since the Powerwagon has "only" a 1800# payload. The Ecodiesel would work well there too!

    Excellent video. I have a 2015 Ram Ecodiesel. I had the 3.6 gas. Feeling that gas engine downshift going up highway hills was maddening. The diesel's torque keeps this from happening. I disagree with the economy of the diesel. Using gasbuddy app I can find good diesel prices. Besides saving 40% on fuel, I get a higher resale. With the 25 gallon tank, my range sometimes says over 700 miles. When I pulled 6500 lbs 900 miles, my oil temp went from 203 to 227, going above 60mph. I used the thermometer to adjust my driving. I don't want that extra friction. I look forward to upgrading to the newer version when I can, although I was planning to keep this truck for 300k miles. Our back seat is not the big one, and as the kids grow, we will need that.

    DIESEL. It’s about time. If you have never driven a diesel, you do not know what you are missing. Now, let’s put this engine in the SUV’s. Would that be great or what. Diesels are more fun to drive than your gas models. We are in Florida at this time, GAS is hard to find now that a hurricane is coming to town, Diesel is available at all stations, no waiting. A performance chip and a few performance upgrades and my fuel economy is better than most new SUV’s. Not bad for a 7.3L Excursion.

    Although I am not currently a truck owner, I have inspected them extensively and what I find: if you select 15 needs/likes in your "build" you are only going to find 10 or 12 features on a truck on the lot. Be prepared to compromise if you want a certain color, technology features, certain wheels, etc.

    This is a month plus old. Current events news as of 9/25/19 is that Fiat Chrysler is in Voltswagon type trouble for having cheat software in their diesel emissions test protocol. So folks who buy this EcoDiesel may well face a mandatory recall whereby performance and economy are reduced. Is that right?

    I really wonder how much longer the automotive industry will be able to offer different trim choices as it will be discriminatory that those with more capital would be able to afford a better model and that would not be equal “equity” with those that can’t afford it. Sound crazy? Probably true.
