      Thank you Jaclyn! I get asked about this program all the time and it ends up being a 1-2 hour conversation. I was lucky to have friends introduce me to the program, but I know so many people have families that need alternate childcare options but do not know who to ask about this. More to come!!

    Thank you so much for this video. I am from Brazil but I live in US and I really wanna get an Au Pair so my kids can have more connection with my native language. This was the only video I found about this topic. BTW, good job on treating them as your family. I was an exchange student back in 2006 and my host family treated me like their own family. It still means a lot to me. 💞🙏 May God bless you so you can continue to bless others🙏

    Other thing to have in mind when you are a host family and the au pair is not allowed to drive and use the car family during the time off, is the cost of public transportation (if there is any) or ubers, I heard a lot au pairs that they spend a lot of money on that when they live in the middle of nowhere... btw thanks for your videos"

    • @aupairhostmom
      @aupairhostmom  4 роки тому +6

      Cintia, this is a very good point to consider about cars. It is such a big topic to discuss that I will dedicate a whole video to cars and driving. It can be a lot of money for au pairs to have to take uber every time they want to go somewhere. In my personal opinion, this is not a good situation for au pairs to live far away from city centers without a car to use.
      Many families have specific and strict rules for their vehicles and what they can be used for. We live in the middle of nowhere, you could say, and so we have a car specifically for our au pairs to use anytime they want (in other words we have three cars). Our rules are: pay for gas for personal use, if you are going to stay out overnight have the car home, no texting while driving, and no drinking then driving.
      Future Au Pairs, make sure you talk with potential host families about what their car rules are and if you have access to one all day or only for work!!
      Thank you for supporting my channel and videos!

    Just so families know Au Pairs pay the agency fee as well as their visa, and other expenses such as a international drivers license for example or even a extra fee for a better health plan.

      Yes, this is true. I want families know that Au pairs are invested in this program financially. Also for Au pairs to know how much families pay besides the weekly stipend. We need to recognize on both sides it is expensive, so hopefully it will help everyone be respectful of the financial arrangements agreed upon during the interview process. Cheers!

To make sure you take time to find the right family. Do not just pick a family because of location or money or they are the first to offer you the position. Sorry, can someone please clarify, so the AU Pair pays for uber/public transportation when they don't have drivers license or is the money for that also provided by the host family? Basically, what are those 200$ a week given for?

    • @aupairhostmom
      @aupairhostmom  7 місяців тому +2

      Great question!
      Host Families are only required to provide transportation (actual rides or money for public transportation/uber) for the educational requirement classes and the monthly meetings with your LCC/AD.
      I will encourage you that if it is at all possible to obtain your driver license and practice a lot, I mean hours upon hours. It will make you a stronger candidate to host families.
      If you are unable to do so, make sure you find a family in a large city with really good public transportation, and live very close to the transportation stop. Know that very view large cities are like this. Think New York City, Chicago (in the city center), San Francisco (in the city center) if you are in the suburbs of these cities they will not have. Ask in interviews very honestly about the public transportation. Ubers are very expensive here, it can be a cause for an unhappy match. You can quickly go through your $200 weekly spend because our country is mostly car driving.
      The $200 weekly stipend is for whatever you choose. Some save for when the program ends. Some spend it on travel, meals out with friends, entertainment, clothes, etc. Im some families you do need to buy your own personal care items, like deodorant, Shampoo, etc., all together that is a little expensive here. Some Au pairs send their money back home to family. It’s your money, so you are free to spend it how your choose.
      Thanks for the questions and good luck! Cheers!

      American Aupair Host Mom that is great to know for many families that they might find a program for a little less agency fees. I believe in our market, APC and CC are the only agencies available. I know larger cities have more options. The agency website usually has a zip code tracker to see if they offer their services in your area.

    Can't afford anyone in this day and age. His mom and i don't make more than 130k together. Daycares are at least a 1 year wait list and babysitters are asking $25/hr minimum. That alone is over 2000/month.
    Someone told me about au pair and how you just pay them 200 to 300 a month, but didn't mention the 10k in fees. We unfortunately don't have that kind of money laying around that wouldn't wipe out most of my what's left of my savings (after having paid 17k already on the house in unexpected repairs).
    No idea how we're going to do this now that his mom is back in the office and my job suddenly wants me back in the office after 5 years of remote work.

    We're in the interview process right now and the taxes is something I'm completely stumped on. Our CPA is saying we have to pay towards social security, etc. but the handbook received said the opposite. Can you elaborate at all on how you file or what you have to pay towards when it comes to taxes?

    • @aupairhostmom
      @aupairhostmom  Рік тому +4

      I am not a CPA, so I am not giving out official tax advice. However, I will tell you what we have done for the past five Au pairs.
      The short answer is, we do not any pay payroll taxes.
      Here is some context around this and what our CPAs have said to date. They are here on a work/study visa and not a traditional work visa. It is a cultural exchange, whereby they are not paid a salary (hence in most states it doesn’t have to be minimum wage), rather given a weekly living stipend plus room and bird. We are hire an agency, not an employee. The Au pair is not an immigrant or a citizen and does not qualify for social security later in life or if something happened to them. They are not eligible for any federal benefits. They are a nonresident aliens.
      Now why and how all these items factor in and matter, I’m not exactly sure. If the agency is on the hook for any federal taxes, I have no insight into. But for some reason this means host families in most circumstances do not pay payroll taxes for Au pairs. I cannot speak to if it is different in certain states, but in the three states we lived in with Au pairs, it has all been the same tax/stipend rules.
      The Au pair does pay federal income tax using a nonresident alien tax form on their weekly stipend.
      Additionally, if your employer offers a childcare FSA, both the agency fees and the weekly stipend count as qualifying expenses.
      If you learn something to add, please share it. I’m curious how this ends up shaking out in your situation. Good luck in your search! Cheers!

    Bottomline this sums up quickly to be on par with a local nanny.

    • @aupairhostmom
      @aupairhostmom  3 роки тому +5

      I think most families will tell you the Au pair route continues to have economic advantage over a US nanny for full time childcare.
      Let’s say you can find a nanny for $12-15/hour for 2 children (which is pretty cheap in many areas for the country). You still have to either pay a nanny agency or treat them as an employee. As an employee the nanny and the parents each pay 7.65 percent for Social Security and Medicare taxes. Unless you pay them under the table. Then you cannot utilize a childcare FSA or any other tax breaks that both nannies and Au pairs qualify.
      I would say if you truly do not have the need for full time childcare and you do not have an extra vehicle, then the nanny route does win out. Hope that helps! Cheers!

      Hello! I do not post videos nearly as much as I would like to, but I’m still very active on the channel! 🤗🤗
      So the first step is identifying an agency that is certified in the US (there are only something like 13 agencies) and also covers your country.
      If you and your host family have found each other it is a cheaper process than an Au pair the agency screens first. If you have a choice in agencies I would definitely find out who has the best price to help you. I suspect it will be one of the smaller agencies.
      Once you find the agency they will give you and the family a list of documents they need. For the family it’s not as much, maybe drivers license, fill out application, home interview, etc. For the Au pair it is a lot more.
      So first step first, find an agency. Cheers!!

      @aupairhostmom  Місяць тому

      @@savagebiscuits0952 for host families, we do have to pay an agency fee in addition to the Au pair stipend.
      This video was made several years ago, so the dollar amounts are a little out of date (thank you inflation).
      Per the Cultural Care website as of today, the current agency fee for host families is $10,595. I always recommend host families to see if they qualify for a discount (new family, returning family, veteran/military, etc). This can be paid in one payment, or broken down into smaller payments. So technically it is not all due up front.
      They have priced the total program costs to approx $425/week, or $9.45/Au pair work hour. That does not include “hidden costs” (room, board, car when applicable, insurance, food, gifts, etc).

      Currently there are over 17,000 Au pairs in the US. I want to assure you that although it has a fancy sounding French name, it is not a program for only the very rich. While it is not inexpensive, neither is childcare. When we looked at full time (40+ hour) good quality daycare for 2 children, it was roughly prices the same when adding in the hidden costs. We started the program in Denver for reference.
      I did a quick internet search and found two stats. One said that the national average is $12612 for daycare for a single infant annually, the second said $16000 annually for infant childcare. Again, that is for one infant. If you have 2 or more children, it’s not necessarily more expensive. Plus there is a huge added bonus of flexibility for those of us without 9-5 jobs, in addition to many other benefits.
      I know many average American families, such as ourselves, that have Au pairs. But the program is not for everyone, and I will be the first one to acknowledge that. If you have found high quality childcare for 2 or more children that is more affordable meets your needs, that is great! I would choose that route too. Consider yourself fortunate. Cheers!

      Hi Florence. You would need to check with the US government approved Au pair agencies (you can find the list online, there are several agencies) and see if your country is covered by one of the agencies.
      If not, you might check online the requirements for Au pairs in some of the European countries.

    ahh. just like with everything else, quality child care only for those that can afford.

    • @aupairhostmom
      @aupairhostmom  3 роки тому +2

      Childcare is very expensive, I totally agree! Hopefully someday there will be better options for affordable quality childcare.
      The program cost is set up to mirror the cost of having 2 children in full time daycare. So financially, it may only make sense to some people if they have 2 or more children and those that need full time childcare. Cheers!

    Do they need to have their own meals or can they be included in your family meals?

    • @aupairhostmom
      @aupairhostmom  3 роки тому +4

      We always let the Au pair know they are welcome to eat with our family at meals. But we are happy for them to prepare their own meals or eat out, if they prefer. We do make sure they have reasonable food to make meals if they do not eat with us. But I do not cook only for them. Hope that answers your question! Cheers!

    But how much is the cost of the agency + paring you with the au pair

    • @aupairhostmom
      @aupairhostmom  Рік тому +2

      Since i made this video, there have been some increases in the agency fees and Au pair stipends. Per one company website:
      -Agency fees (“application, deposit, program fees) come to $9,780
      -Au pair stipend for one agency is now reported at $215/week
      -Total: $20,960.
      Second agency:
      -agency fees (registration, processing, program fees) $11,120
      -Au Pair stipend $109.75/week
      -total: $21,103
      Some states do have income minimums for Au pairs, I believe it is limited to Massachusetts and California, but the agencies will know more on this.
      Based this updates amount, I would estimate the true program cost (if you include things like food and utility costs, plus provide optional items such as a vehicle, cell, included on family vacations, etc) would range between $25,000 to $30,000 based on 2023 prices.

    I seriously considered being an au pair 20yrs ago. I just turned 40. What age are au pais? Is there a limit?

    • @aupairhostmom
      @aupairhostmom  2 роки тому

      In the US the age limit is 18-26. I do believe there are European countries that do not have the same age restrictions, but I am not an expert on those programs. We all need a magic wand so we can go back and be in our 20s again! 🤣🤗Cheers!

      @aupairhostmom  3 роки тому +1

      I wouldn’t be surprised if that is typical. When we tried to figure it out the amount, but we didn’t have exact number and then we tried to convert Colombian pesos. So we could be low on our estimate. But it goes to show that the Au pairs are invested in this program!!!

      Your best option, after you apply for an agency, is to join one of the many Facebook Au pair groups. Many of them allow families and Au pair candidates to connect. Cheers!

    • @aupairhostmom
      @aupairhostmom  Рік тому +1

      The first thing you need to do is see if any of the United States Au Pair Agencies, that are government approved, cover Kenya.
      If no agency does, you might look at some of the European countries and see if this is an option. Many have different rules than the US. Good luck! Cheers!
