  • I decided to try and Knurl an old Piston, It's an old method of sizing a piston should it still be done. 👀

Now everybody's going to talk about knurling a piston when the cylinder bore is too big. Now the new Pistons have special coatings.
Has machinists we would do this and then we'd have to sand them to fit the bore. When the customer cannot afford a set of Pistons or to bore the block.

I don't know anything about engine rebuilding but when it'd be good to help with the oil on a high performance engine cheers Graham.

I would think a knurl would hang around about as long as coatings. Knurling was actually very popular before coatings took it's place.

If your a professional racing team and your goal is to get a few more passes out of the pistons before replacing them the coatings are what's used now. For the average guy who wants to turn the key and have an engine that'll go and not have issues a bore with new pistons is the way to go. Or even custom oversized pistons for an engine that's bored to the max but can be honed a few thousand. The one thing you can't find with coated pistons is how many miles will the coatings last. That tells me they don't last long enough for a driver vehicle.

If you have to rebuild a an older motor for something and the cylinders and pistons look OK, running a straight cutting hone to clean up the cylinders and then knurling the pistons saves the cost of boring and new pistons (rings and bearings only). When I started working in a shop in the early 70's, this used to be an option. With todays prices, it may make a comeback for home mechanics.

Hey man! Very informative video was interesting to learn something from the old days!
Just alittle tip tho i think most people will enjoy your voice more if it wasnt overwhelmed by the background music, maybe just keep the music in the beginning and cut it after for future videos i would be more pleasant to watch! Awesome video tho keep up the good work!

I drove 5 hours last year to pick up an old perfect circle knurling fixture..
It was a common thing to do in the 60's and you can even find instances of individuals knurling pistons fit high performance engines.
I basically acquired it for personal use. Not sure id want to take the chance if i was selling an engine..
I have an original 1970 sbc LT1 engine i plan on trying this on.
Honing the bores straight and reusing the 11-1 pop up pistons.

Good luck with your project, I may be trying the same thing on a engine soon

My piston to liner clearance was 4 to 4.5 thou with the limit being 3 and 2.5 ideal for my engine. A high performance builder told me to knurl the pistons as long as my clearance was not more that 5 thou. I seem to be right in the grove for this treatment.

I'm "rebuilding" a 351w, and I don't have the machinery to do a knurl, low compression in 1 cylinder, getting oversized rings and filing them down but I definitely would do it as I'm going to have to hit a machine shop after this so why not!?

I hope it works out for you, I would think as hard as the factory Hypereutectic pistons are even knurled they should last a long time.

  • @Chiefonenut

How long will the knurl hold up?

    • @E.T.GARAGE
      @E.T.GARAGE  4 місяці тому

I have no idea, I would think on a hypereutectic piston it would hold longer than say a soft Forged piston.

The raised up areas taking up the slop are very thin. It won't last very long
