  • Working families of Immokalee, Florida, have been fighting exploitation by the agricultural industry. "I will always fight. As long as I can see my children happy and well, I will continue fighting to provide them with the best. My children are the motor that drives my life,” Udelia says.
In 2008, Bernie traveled to Immokalee and met with migrant workers who were being ruthlessly exploited. He told the story to Congress in the hopes of improving their condition, and succeeded. But how many more Immokalees are there? How many fields or factories are there? We have to ask ourselves ‘who benefits from this exploitation?' And to understand that it is not only the Immokalee workers who suffer but every worker in America because that pushes us in a race to the bottom.
We appreciate the use of footage from the award winning documentary “Food Chains”, directed by Sanjay Rawal.

    ★ About Bernie:
Bernie Sanders is a Democratic candidate for President of the United States. He is serving his second term in the U.S. Senate after winning re-election in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote. Sanders previously served as mayor of Vermont’s largest city for eight years before defeating an incumbent Republican to be the sole congressperson for the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lives in Burlington, Vermont with his wife Jane and has four children and seven grandchildren.
Bernard “Bernie” Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents and grew up in a small, rent-controlled apartment. His father came to the United States from Poland at the age of 17 without much money or a formal education. While attending the University of Chicago, a 20-year-old Sanders led students in a multi-week sit-in to oppose segregation in off-campus housing owned by the university as a Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) officer. In August of 1963, Sanders took an overnight bus as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to hear Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech firsthand at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
After graduation, Bernie moved to Vermont where he worked as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker. In 1981, he was elected as mayor of Burlington as an Independent by a mere 10 votes, shocking the city’s political establishment by defeating a six-term, local machine mayor. In 1983, Bernie was re-elected by a 21 point margin with a record amount of voter turnout. Under his administration, the city made major strides in affordable housing, progressive taxation, environmental protection, child care, women’s rights, youth programs and the arts. In 1990, Sanders was elected to the House of Representatives as the first Independent in 40 years and joined the Democratic caucus. He was re-elected for eight terms, during which he voted against the deregulation of Wall Street, the Patriot Act, and the invasion of Iraq.
In 2006, Sanders defeated the richest man in Vermont to win a seat in the U.S. Senate as an Independent. Known as a “practical and successful legislator,” Sanders served as chairman of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs where he authored and passed the most significant veteran health care reform bill in recent history. While in the Senate, Sanders has fought tirelessly for working class Americans against the influence of big money in politics. In 2010, he gave an eight-and-a-half hour filibuster-like speech on the Senate floor in opposition to extending Bush-era tax breaks for the wealthy. In 2015, the Democratic leadership tapped Bernie to serve as the caucus’ ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee.
Known for his consistency on the issues, Senator Sanders has supported the working class, women, communities of color, and the LGBT community throughout his career. He is an advocate for the environment, unions, and immigrants. He voted against Keystone XL, opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, wants to expand the Voting Rights Act, and pass the Equal Rights Amendment.

+Andrew Bren. I've thought this through for a very long time. I've been a democratic socialist since high school 5 years ago. I only knew about Bernie as the senator from Vermont but now that I've seen his proposals and how much the middle class will save under universal health care, which I believe is a right anyway, made me support him. I would love to see my tax dollars go towards welfare programs where I'll actually see the benefits to society; like Pope Francis says our economy ought to have a humane goal. Plus I would hate myself if I supported any politician with a superpac. I cannot stand that money from the extremely wealthy basically decides the nominees that can even run. So yea I want America to have a politician that does not have his hands tied thanks to the favors they are expected to give to others like appointing Goldman Sachs employees to the role of Secretary of the Treasury etc

as a first-generation american, as the son of two illegal immigrants whose sacrifices i owe everything to, this video brought me to tears.
i am tired of turning on a tv and watching the republican party dehumanize my family. i am tired of hearing the racist/xenophobic bigotry between the old, white, and privileged pass for a debate. and most of all, i am tired of seeing trump scape-goat my family for the decline of the middle class.
look, you have EVERY reason to be mad. american median income is bordering what it was 40 years ago while that of the top 1/10th of 1 percent's has sky-rocketed. but not only do you have every reason to be mad---YOU HAVE EVERY RESPONSIBILITY TO HOLD THE REAL CULPRITS ACCOUNTABLE.
pointing one's fingers at the ethnic and poor is the oldest trick in the book. hitler, mussolini, you name the fascist; history will name the genocide. now that a 2016 trump presidency is a very real possibility, you cannot afford to point your finger the wrong way.
WALL STREET's reckless, fraudulent behavior caused the american financial crisis, and unless we enforce stronger regulationary policy (reinstate glass-steagall, outlaw derivatives, volcker rule), more boom and bust cycles will follow.
bernie has waged this war against wall street for decades. hillary has taken their money and supported the very trade deals (NAFTA/TPP) that most exported american jobs.
    the answer's clear.

+Llama Llama Even most illegal aliens pay taxes (you're not allowed to file for any american amnesties etc unless you have about 5+ years of tax paying (which I agree with).
it's a possibility much like some claiming a false number of dependents or lying about their wages for government assistance and working under the table. HUD and section 8 being harder programs to "borrow" a SS due to the nature of their rules. This world is full of good/bad but it's not right to point fingers and start another round of McCarthyism in this day and age.

My dad started working in the fields at the age of 15. He took classes at night and got his high school diploma . Got a job at that same high school as a groundskeeper. Got his residency. Brought and married my mom. She did what she could. Babysat, mended clothing, cleaned houses. To this day the only gov't handout they've ever taken is their social security checks that they both earned working day and night. We got sent through college with no debt. My dad took on 3 jobs just to make that possible. So I stand with immigrants. Because I am a proud child of two. I am only a US citizen because of their courage, sacrifice and hard work.

This is easily one of the best ads to explain how Sanders has used his voice to effect positive and progressive change even without getting a lot of bills passed. That part of what makes a leader a leader is the strength of the message and how that message is conveyed to improve the lives of others.

+Darth Jar Jar the it's hard to put into words what just happened to me reading this comment. do you not understand that these people were suddenly able to live just because consumers spent a tiny amount more?
What you are suggesting is that Bernie likes "taking away other people's money" for his own gain. Since I assume you're in the middle class at best, your money will not be "taken away". You will personally gain, because what Bernie Sanders is proposing is to take money back from the people who originally took it from you, which is banks and giant corporations (small businesses or the poor).
If asked to draw wealth distribution in America everyone draws a pretty steep graph indicating they know something is wrong, but in reality it is much more ridiculous. I don't know the exact numbers, but at the end it is very few people controlling extreme portions of wealth. And money buys everything (except Bernie).

I donated for Bernie's campaign, even though I'm German. I benefit from social programs here directly, free education and healthcare. Things can be done way better here, but I've been in California for a year (study abroad - which Germany paid for as a schoolorship everybody can get, if their parents earn less than 100k) and I've seen problems that would be unacceptable here, including racial issues. I met so many great people over there and I think that America can do so much better!! Since Germany and every other country is affected by the results of this particular presidantial race (trade agreements, world peace etc.) I want to do my part in supporting him.

    I cried.

  • @BrockSmith13
    @BrockSmith13 8 років тому +29

I cry almost every time I see one of these documentary ads from the campaign. Slavery is alive and well in this country, it never left, it just shifts to a new minority group. First they tried to use children, now it's private prisons, migrant workers, and Walmart. This country needs Bernie Sanders more than ever, and I can't imagine the detriment to society his loss would mean. The corporate media is trying to propagate this race into one between a corporate puppet (Clinton) and a corporate puppeteer (Trump), and it just isn't. This campaign simply HAS to win, there is no alternative for the average American who can't afford Clinton's plans to effectively end social security and replace it with a welfare system. It can't afford anymore corrupt trade deals that export jobs (mind you to the foreign slave labor practice known as "sweat shops") and seek to change US pharmaceutical and copyright law in the most undemocratic way possible so as to make our lives even more difficult, all for the benefit of a few powerful individual's greed. Bernie Sanders is the only candidate who cares about, and has consistently cared about us for his entire life, and done so because he IS one of us, having grown up in Brooklyn, the son of Jewish American immigrants. Every time I hear something new from his past in supporting gay and transgender rights only three years after Stonewall during his first attempt at public office, or knowing that there is a man alive today who is running for president who chained himself to two other black people to protest segregation in Chicago, I can't help but cry at how tremendous of a possibility it is for this country that this man of the people could be our next president. I have so much respect for the work he's done fighting for my grandfather's VA benefits that he desperately needs to survive, god knows he could NEVER afford his medical bills otherwise, especially after he broke his hip last year. The entire country needs to know this man, needs to know the countless things he's done and helped fight for to get and keep our human rights. I'm disgusted at how other politicians try to use my community as a political pawn when they've done everything under the sun to strip us of our rights, and how they do the same with every other community that isn't directly paying their light bills in "campaign contributions" and "speaking fees". In a time where politicians are no better than snake oil salesmen, Bernie Sanders stands above the rest in his consistency in fighting for ALL of our rights, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, racial or ethnic background. While others want to debate so-called "inconsistencies" on gun legislation to distract from the massive problems we actually face in this country, I stand behind and rally for this great man who has done and will do so much in return. Enough is Enough. #SaveUsBernie
