My grandmother made these of wool fabric when I was little (about 60 years ago). She would knot the fabric strips which were precut and the ends were cut diagonally. I loved those warm and soft rugs.. hope this helps!

Does the fabric stay in place without knotting when it comes time to vacuuming or washing the rug?

I cant imagine so. I am going to knot for staying strength. I wouldnt wash in general. Perhaps taking outside and using a gentle soap, a large tub and the hose, to wash, then dry in sun

they definitely would not hold up in the washer or dryer. I made one but knotted each strand and still had some come off in the dryer

I’ve just made one and you just poke both ends through. You can tie them in a knot if you want but it’s not necessary.

OK, I'm trying to figure out if you know them or what you did to keep them from falling out. I can see that you're poking the fabric thru, but would you tell me how to secure the pieces?

I saw techniques where u tie the strips w a tight knot (like an easy "latch hook" )

    • @alt290865
      @alt290865 3 роки тому +2

You poke both ends through and they stay in place. Or you can tie the ends in a knot

This looks great but how does the fabric stay in place w/out tying it or gluing it in place? I found that my fabric pieces could pull out easy.

    • @michelledonnelly2262

Tie them when you pull through.

    • @c.fraizer7666

Trying them makes bumps under your feet I've found. Im going to either use a perm fabric glue to bottom of rug or put a single stitch in ea piece after pulling through.

Just wondering if there was any concern or experience with “tearing” of the rubber backing. I have purchased these rag rugs, but there has always been a heavy duty backing on the rug bottom. The tutorial showed work on the non-skid rubber, but the crossmembers of the rubber looked insignificant. I would hate to go to so much work only to have the rubber begin tearing, and the rug start to come apart. These rugs can provide so much color enhancement to rooms, as well as serving a valued utilitarian purpose.

They sell jars of rubber backing that you paint on if you'd Like added bottom. There are also cloth mats like this that are usually used for latch hooking that I'm sure could be used.

You can get canvas mesh backing versus rubber. It’s much more solid and washable.

@Remodelaholic, this video is quite old, so I hope you’re still online and able to respond. I’m very interested in making one of these shag rugs for my campervan. I’m concerned about how well it will hold up, given it is likely to get dirty and I’ll want to wash it from time to time. Is washing one of these rugs even possible? The shags aren’t securely attached and it seems they may come out in the wash. What are your thought and do you think use as I’ve describe is advisable?

Do you have any suggestions on how much material material to purchase for a specific size rug especially since it will be cut into strips. I'm not speaking of the base but the actual strips that I will be cutting I'm going to be making mine out of t-shirts and don't know how many t-shirts I should purchase.

    • @Remodelaholic

Regular fabric will fray easier it also doesn’t roll or stretch like Jersey, so if you can use jersey
