Quick "Tutorial" on driving in Switzerland - No you are not THAT good a driver! :)

  • Unfortunately, many come to this country and think, because they can drive well in theirs, it makes them an instant driving sensation here in Switzerland. Because of the strict rules and the amount of them, people especially from Third World countries (like me) can be overwhelmed and oftentimes maybe even discouraged to drive here.
This is really just a brief video of the most crucial traffic laws and regulations I can think of during my drive from the German border to Switzerland.
    0:37 Short disclaimer
    0:51 Driving on provincial roads
1:15 Driving on the "Autostrasse" (slower freeway)
3:20 Driving on the "Autobahn" (faster freeway)
4:40 Driving in the city (Zurich as an example)
As said in the video, this should not replace an actual driving exam for those who are planning to live here. But for those who are planning a short visit and are going to rent or borrow a car, it'd be a smart idea to know a few rules and regulations as well as Swiss driving culture.

2:08 the signs are completely opposite of what was explained. They indicate that the overtraining restriction no longer applies, which is also in accordance with the dotted road lines. In general, white, circle signs are used to negate the restriction imposed by the similar, but red circle signs..

      Hi there 137vuk
You are right. It must've been those late night hours of editing. Thanks for letting me know. Since that was my first take on creating such a video, I was thinking of redoing this video anyways.
      Keep up the constructive feedback!
      Thanks!

Edit: nevermind i jumped the gun hahaha! later on you address the 120 speed limit, I was going on the fact that you said general limit is 100 somewhere in the beginning! My bad sorryy
If you were to redo the video, freeway max speed is 120 kmp/h unless otherwise stated. In tunnels it's always 100kmp/h unless otherwise stated (it's never more, if anything it's less, usually 80kmp/h. You never see a 120 sign, the sign for max limit is a white circle with diagonal stripes, sort of similar to the one to indicate the end of the overtaking restriction but with no pictogram behind the lines. It pretty much means "all limits stated before are no longer valid and general freeway speed limit applies (120)".
      Nice vid anyway!
Just quick detail, no big deal

Hehe no problem! It's always a good thing to be corrected, especially in things as serious as traffic issues.
Thanks again and take care, Ruben!

For a Slovenian these seem like normal driving rules. In a lot of EU countries in general people follow these rules. From our perspective it seems that some countries simply don't follow rules and are sloppy about them in the first place and not that ours are extra strict. Interesting how perspectives are different depending on how you look at it.

I never drove in the Eastern part of Europe, but the further west and/or south, it seems to me as a Swiss, the more chaotic people drive. I drove 6 years in the USA and Philippines and it‘s a huge difference altogether.

Something you forgot to say is that if you are on a red light and there is an emergency vehicle behind you, it is legal to cross the road slowly and carefully to open the way for the firefighters etc. If there is a red light speed camera and you get a ticket you can call the police and tell them that it was an emergency, so they will check your information and dismiss your ticket. Theres an other thing you've forgot. If there's traffic jam you have to build a "Rettungsgasse" to make a way for emergency vehicles. That means that all vehicles on the very left lane go to the left side of their lane and all other lanes go as much as possible to the right.

Supremely helpful. Drove in Canada for 18 years (license expired while in Switzerland) so... had to start from scratch here. 20 hrs of driving school here, going for practical in 2 days. Despite my best efforts, I haven't felt this nervous/anxious, since going to my first high school dance. :( This video was really helpful. I'd love to see another - even a much longer version just covering every situation you encounter along the way. These 8 mins. were more helpful than 8 mins. in a car with any instructor (ok, being able to pause along the video helps, haha... can't do that in real life). Thank you again for doing this. Now I'll visit your channel in the hopes you did more like these. In any case, thank you - and cheers!

Hi there for the "Kudos" :)
Funny, I was actually considering doing much more such videos, since we drive quite a bit and I always encounter people struggling as it is VERY strict in Switzerland. Have been driving myself quite a bit around the world like half of Europe, USA, Philippines and even PNG... Nothing is like Switzerland :)
But will do some driving and share some updates on the rules and laws here.
      Take care!

Greaaaat!! Must-see viewing for every Swiss visitor! (Too bad about the gaffe at 2:08, but don't sweat the small stuff!) Now do a couple of country roads and passes (eg Albis Pass, Buchenegg near Zürich, or Sattelegg (middle-sized pass further away), or Klausen (major pass). Show how the centreline markings are often missing and the seam in the asphalt is NOT a good lane indicator. Show how there are no shoulders, but low curbs. Show the frequent lack of guardrails and the frequent presence of stone pillars instead. Show how blind a blind curve can be, and how many of 'em there are, and how a road can change direction as it tops a crest. Show how narrow the roads are, and how the oh-so-exact Swiss drivers can crowd or cross the centreline (where present). Show how a Postbus fills up a lane -- and a bit more. Or truck. Or tractor with 7-foot tires and two trailers. Driving in Switzerland: wonderful, but keeps you on your toes!!

      Hi Griffin
Thanks for your encouraging comment. It sure is different from driving in other countries. There are so many things you need to watch out for. I am looking for ways on how to get content quicker into UA-cam without having to reduce the quality of the videos.
      Take care out there!

2:09 is wrong, it means that you are now able to overtake hence the grey it means "aufgehoben/lifted" if it would be a red circle on the outside and one car black the other red then it s a "don't do it sign" same with the speed limit if there is a "80" and 1km later the "80 in a grey circle crossed with one light grey line" it is not 80 no more instead it s (on the autobahn for example) 120km/h.

      Hi there
Thank you! I already pinned @137vuk's comment with that correction. Unfortunately, I have no way to correct that part of the video. I'm working on an update for this video. Let me know, if you see other things that I should add in my new video. Really grateful for your inputs.
      Take care!

@@FamilyOnAMission You're welcome! I didn t notice the pinned comment unfortunately.. There is a similiar sign with a car on the eight side and a truck on the left in red with a red circle that pretty much means "on this section, trucks are not allowed to overtake cars". Anyways I didn't see anything else that is wrong. Nice video!

Is there access to go neighbour country through driving from Switzerland Nd what we need to do

    • @FamilyOnAMission
      @FamilyOnAMission  3 роки тому

      Hi there!
So far I'm informed, the borders to the neighbouring countries are still open, but it can change any day. Especially during Christmas news all around us is confirming that the European nations are being more strict during the holiday season until the first weeks of 2021.
      More info: ec.europa.eu/info/live-work-travel-eu/coronavirus-response/travel-during-coronavirus-pandemic_en
      I hope that helped.

      Hi Qian Liu
Thank you for your comment. It’s really unfortunate that UA-cam doesn’t allow to re-edit the video. But a viewer has already found my mistake and I pinned it here in the comment section.
I will however produce more such videos.
Keep watching and sending us feedback. It’s well appreciated.

Yes, it's funny. I've been living here for decades and to see some videos of areas that for us "natives" is just like a routine, might be for others special :) I have more videos of driving around.
      Thanks and take care!

The explanations that keep popping up go away almost as soon as they come up before you've had a chance to read them!

    • @FamilyOnAMission
      @FamilyOnAMission  3 роки тому +5

      Hi Rohit
Thanks for your feedback. It's a known conflict I have when editing. If I make it too long, the dynamics of the video can be interrupted and it's harder for others who just want to watch to skip these popups. Whereas for those who are interested can simply pause the video and take their time to read.
But maybe I'll be narrating instead. That way the flow of the video stays in tact while I explain the specific scene.
Hope I was able to clarify some things :)

Quite simply, if you can't or don't want to abide by the laws ... Der, Die, Das, Diverse! should just let it be and everything will be fine.
Here there are rules and laws that you have to adhere to ..... or, you just have states, like in regions, called something by the sympathetic gentleman ... And here there are people who for Happiness are still interested in peace and order ......
