- I build another Matchbox classic, from a 1983 kit Monty's Caravan make an appearance. The vehicle was used a a mobile command vehicle for British Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery and features in the kit along with a Dingo scout car and a neat diorama.
Outstanding takes me back to my childhood 👍
Wonderful build and painting. of these realy nice kit.
Great build 😎 another classic !
Fantastic.
Tamiya extra thin works perfectly when applied thinly on decals (doesn't matter how old they are). It not only creates the strongest bond, but also melts away the films and gives the decals a matt painted look. Don't be greedy though, or it can melt away the decals. 👍
Superb😊👍🏻👏🏼
I remember doing this model in the mid 90,s as a kid.
Very nicely done. Brought back happy memories from the early 80s. Love the old matchbox range of kits
There are more to come, stay tuned 👍
It’s as if Matchbox, deliberately, set out to make stuff Airfix couldn’t or wouldn’t do.The mid 70’s to 80’s were a fun time for modellers.
Nice build sir 👌😎☕️ regards Fred
One of my favourite all time builds. Massively cool kit.
Beautifully done. A true master of detail. Well done Neil.
I love how it goes from the plastic base, looking like it weighs like a few feathers to a hefty looking die-cast feel. Amazing work.
I always weigh my plastic kits down with a few old coins or chips of metal hidden and glued to the interior. Helps keep the wheels flat and gives a pleasant heft when moving them around the wargames table!
What a talent, lovely to watch. Subscribed!
I love these old Matchbox kits, I have the Desert Patrol diorama sitting completed in my collection. Lots of detail, everything just fits nicely, great kits.
That one is on my to do list for a video. Stay tuned. 👍
I have vivid memories of doing this one in the mid eighties, didn't turn out as sweet as this though!
Excellent work mate. 👍
Marvellous work Neil. Those little tips and the description of all your hard won techniques and 'secrets' should be gold for beginners and experienced modellers alike. As you know, I've built literally hundreds of models, but I have never encountered that technique where you specifically go back and add some spot touches of the base colour OVER the dry brushing. When you see it explained and performed, it is pure gold. I'll be using that one from now on.
Glad you are getting something out of the videos, I will keep on posting videos and hopefully my descriptions and visuals will improve for everyone’s benefit.
Thanks for watching.
amazng result for this classic matchbox great work and video
Man this turned out so good.
Thanks, it’s a great kit all I had to do was colour it in properly 👍
Well done, a super little diorama, I love these old matchbox kits. I have this one in the stash somewhere I think I may have to dig it out and build it.
I remember having this one as a kid, never was able to make it look so good!👍
Models look excellent with just the primer on!!!
This, the 17pdr/tractor/Jeep and the Char B1/FT-17 combo were most excellent and rare little kits. The diorama bases in the other two kits were a lot more scenic, though.
Thanks for bringing back some memories.
The modern model companies could learn from these value for money old kits . Figures and diorama provided as well as a model was a great idea now so sadly ignored . Apart from Tamiya who still provide excellent figures to complement the model most just give the bare essentials and no more . Even with most up to date aircraft kits you get no pilot figure something that was always included in the past . These things add a lot to a model .
I agree, to make 1/72 scale AFVs on small dioramas must be an open goal for a modern manufacturer.
Airfix seems to ignore this market which seems crazy to me.
So true. The matchbox dioramas brought the models to life. Made my first Revel kit recently and was gutted that there was no pilot😢
I think only some Airfix kits come with pilots now, their new tooled me110 did but their new tooled me410 didn’t.
Figures are good they add scale and give the builder options.
Perhaps Airfix could be shamed upon the altar of political correctness into providing female ATA pilots....?
Beautiful 👍👍
I had this one when I was a kid though I painted mine in the desert scheme. Was one of my favourites along with a german half-track & a LRDG chevy truck
That’s fantastic. Looks brilliant. Wish I had the patience. I just buy dinky toys. Corgi diecast. I might start modelling again soon.
Give it a go, their are some excellent kits out there to get started again.
Superb, the finished diorama is excellent.
This was a very nice presentation and great to watch.
I never saw this kit in my younger days but would have loved it.
Matchbox models were brilliant. I remember scrimping and scraping for a 1/32 BF109 my local toy shop (remember them!) Had, only for it to be reduced to a fraction of its cost dueto missing manual! Bonus. It was the biggest scale I had ever built and although not a fan of the BF109 particularly, I loved it.
I love the pictures on the front of these kits
This was for me at the time a rare treat, as the two vehicles were not common to the market then.
Realy nice Job done
Lovely job!
Cool model. 👍
Great video. Really love how you are growing in skill with videos. And love how you are imparting the techniques you are using.
Great video. I was watching Peter Oxley's (The master of Matchbox) review of that kit a few days ago. Good to watch you review & build it. SUBSCRIBED👍👍
Thanks, I’m busy building a pristine Matchbox Bf109 open topped box dated 1973, I’m sure this would give Peter Oxley a major rant but really enjoying building these kit.
Seriously I do enjoy peters channel 👍
@@creativetimewasting I would love to see the Bf109 build. They are great kits to collect & build. Peter will very much enjoy watching your builds too. We look forward to watching more videos from you. All the best 👍👍
@@anjkovo2138 thanks, I’m building two bf109s, one unpainted from 1973 and a later version which I’m going to build to ‘modern’ standards and contrast the two in a video so keep watching. I might incorporate the newer tooled Airfix offering for a triple contrast. 👍
Sweet job!
I built this in 1987. Good model.
Great job you've earned a subscriber. I like your approach without using expensive materials.
I do have a lot of products I’ve bought over the years, I don’t see the point in buying the latest ‘Fad’ item instead I prefer to buy as and when and use up what I have.
Thanks for watching 👍
Very nice - a blast from the past really, I remember building those Matchbox kits in the 80's, and I really loved getting the bases with the kits.
Which makes me wonder why not more companies include that? A simple base and a couple of figures would be awesome, especially for younger modellers who would just need to build and paint everything from the box, without having to tear open a cornflakes box or something.
Totally agree, it’s an open goal for Airfix.
Surprised this was as late as 1983. Must have been wargaming later than I thought! Great vid.
The box is dated 1983 and also has the Revell logo on it too. The ‘Made in England’ stamp on the sprues has also been removed so this kit is a Revell production using the Lesney Matchbox moulds.
@@creativetimewasting I guess I was buying revell productions of Matchbox then. Living in a small town, toyshop choices were very limited, usually Shermans, Churchills, Panthers and Tigers etc. Maybe a Sd Kfz and Jeep or two or it would be cold war stuff.
Yes, it must’ve first come out in around 1983, a few years after I stopped modelling. Would’ve bought it otherwise. Lovely looking kits.
Normally regarding the weathering I’d agree with you 100% but in this case no, Monty had things looking pristine and they were always kept spotless. We had a couple of his vehicles at Beverley before MAT closed and one of his vehicles had a cigarette burn caused by a smoking senior officer. Apparently he got a right old bollocking off Monty for that! Loved the build and what a cracking little kit! I converted my vehicle into a standard GS using tissue paper for the tarp. Nowhere near as good as yours!
Mmmmhhh..... Don't worry about those damned Jerries shooting us old chap, you missed a bit whilst shampooing the exhaust pipe.....
Nicely done. I would have used a much more brown muddy color as dirt because of the German soil in north-west Germany. I would also have put this mud color at the inside of the mud guards. I used the noise antenna hair that our cat lost in the living room. I picked these up, cut them to the right length, glue them and painted them black. Regards from the Battle of the Bulge area
Dust dries fairly light regardless of the colour of the local mud. Only exception is iron-rich soil of the type you see in Africa and SE Asia, which can be very red.
I have this set and I like it.
The caravans are on display at Duxford Imperial War museum.
I had a real problem removing the leaf springs from the sprue for the Leyland. I had an older version.
They can be tricky but a good pair of snips are the way to go. I use Tamiya ones, very good quality.
I remember when Airfix released it's model of Monty's Humber. It was bloody expensive compared to other models in the same range. I never found out why maybe they had to pay royalties or something to him. Well, he was still alive at the time so that dates me!😅
That’s one I never built, I think 1/32 scale.
Might see if I can find one.
Nice, just subbed
😉👍
Awesome job👍, do you just add thinners to into the little enamel tins? How much thinners would you suggest to use please?
Cheers, no I add the thinners directly into the airbrush cup and mix it in situ. The mix is around 50/50 and is probably the consistency of slightly thick milk.
I will try to demonstrate in one of my next videos 👍
It's so sad that Revell doesn't sell these old Matchbox kits on a regular base anymore... they just (well, the smaller ones) pop on and off their catalogue anually, no reason behind it I guess.
I bought this kit recently. I want to use a primer but I have never used one before. What primer did you use and where did you buy? I did hear that you could buy suitable primer from Halfords but again I’m unsure what would be suitable. Thanks
Yes, Halfords standard grey primer is excellent and performs very well with any paint you want to use.
I buy autotek grey primer from Amazon, it’s from the same manufacturer that supplies Halfords it’s just cheaper.
Autotek primer is in a black can with green writing.
Just be carful to when priming models, light dust coats only and you will be fine.
If you want me to do a little demo video for you I can at the weekend just let me know otherwise good luck with your model 👍
Thanks for the very kind demo offer. If you can show it on your next build that would be great as I’m about to start building an Airfix ME 109 so can’t wait to see your next video. I’ll head to Halfords when I return home. You have some super tips such as the aerial hack and you’ve done a great of explaining your weathering technique. With the oil wash do you have to clean up the overspill? I use Tamiya panel liner but overspill is very noticeable. The paint job on the diorama is incredible and if you are doing another one it would be great to see how each step is achieved. Subbed now and off to watch your other vids👍
I will incorporate primer application on my next video which is indeed a trio of me109s, two classic Matchbox models and the newish one from Airfix in 1/72 scale. Stay tuned for that one.
I do use Tamiya panel wash too but mainly only for more detailed areas on larger kits or on white areas such as wheel bays etc.
I would use it on a more gloss surface than matt and you can use white spirt on a cotton bud to clean away the excess wash. I will do a quick tutorial on that too shortly. Thanks for watching.
