  • Several years ago Geoffrey Nobes, former Bandmaster of Portsmouth Citadel Band, composed a tune to words by hymn writer Nick Fawcett.
He dedicated this arrangement to the memory of his friend Bandmaster Derek Wilding of Lavenham Corps.

Today David travelled a long way to worship at his childhood church on the outskirts of Plymouth, as "He Had To!"
These true words and this superb music together, is helping him through the profound loss of the Plymouth tragedies over the past 3 days.
If it can help you through your sadness's too, then there is hope. Amen.

I commented on this a year ago during yet another lockdown, not knowing what God had in store for me and my husband. I sadly lost my husband to pancreatic and liver cancer a few months ago so this is even more relevant to me now.

A lovely elegaic tune in a gentle setting. I met the composer today - his brother is one of my colleagues.

Here are the words from the ISB's site:
Prelude on the hymn tune 'Lavenham'
    25/10/2015
    by
Prelude on the hymn tune 'Lavenham' composed by
Geoffrey Nobes has been a popular piece on tour with the thought
provoking lyrics being displayed on the screens whilst we have presented
    this piece of music.
There have been numerous requests for a copy of these lyrics. Here
are the three verses from this hymn that we use with Geoffrey's
    arrangement.
We hope and pray that these will be helpful to you.
Lord, there are times when I have to ask, ‘What?’ -
times when your love is not easy to spot.
What is life’s purpose and what of me here?’
Grant me some answers, Lord, make your will clear.
Lord, there are times when I have to ask, ‘How?’ -
times when what’s preached doesn’t square with life now.
Wrestling with doubt I ask, ‘How can this be?’
Grant me some answers, Lord, help me to see.
Lord, there are times when the questions run fast -
times when I fear that my faith may not last.
Help me, support me, Lord, help me get through.
Lead me through darkness till light shines anew.
