- Using a tee in batting practice is critical to becoming a great hitter. Many of the conference pros you know and love swear by the tee as part of their routine to stay sharp in the box.
On this week's episode, we cover part II of our tee work series as we cover setting up and working the opposite field. Watch as Cam & Jason adjust the tee and their swings to focus on the opposite field. We even work in a few tips/tricks we learned from Everett Williams and "Laser" David Johnson (Links below).

You guys should do this in the batting cages or have someone pitch to you. I actually went last Friday to the cages because I've practiced this motion off the tee just as you guys have done and it does help with getting used to aiming and turning your body. The batting cages helped me time each pitch going oppo. I tried it last Monday at my game and I hit it right at the second baseman. It isn't easy and takes a lot of practice.
We totally agree! I (Cam) have had the opportunity to practice this a fair amount off of the tee and off of live pitching/pitching machine. I've even broke it out in a couple of games so far. Both instances resulted in triples. Gotta love it. Thanks for watching!
I would think it’s also very important to mention that if you are not proficient in trying to swing opposite- you should practice this before you try to in a game.
Inexperienced batters are going to send an outside pitch right up the middle at the pitcher 7/10 times. In recreational leagues this can be very dangerous.
Thanks for the comment Jacob. Yes, you are absolutely correct. One of a few things can occur if a batter isn't proficient with the backside swing. They can either pop-up lazily to the right side because they dip their shoulder or blow box and hurt the pitcher incidentally. Best practice is definitely to hone the skill before experimenting in a game situation. Thanks for the additional feedback!
@@LeagueNightSoftball 100%! A super useful tool to have though if you can get it dialed in through practice! Very good walk-through of how to use the tee block to work on this though.
I love being able to have the defense on their toes. Especially if it’s a team that does not know you. I literally hit 2 balls over the 3rd base bag first 2 at bats for doubles. 3rd at bat 3rd baseman hovered over that bag like I was going to hit there three times in a row. I then went opo to right center for a triple. Learning how to hit everywhere is huge!!!
Gerard, that's the kind of thing we want all of our viewers to be able to accomplish! Keep hitting it where they ain't!! If you have any tips that have helped you get to this point in your career, we would love to hear them.
Hitting opponents is important in becoming a complete team player.
You have instructions on making a tee like yours?
This is great!
Quick Question ! League night tournament. What is the rule bat 13 player or what is the max ?
Every league I've played in allow up to 12 batters. However, most teams opt to bat only 10 or 11 in the playoffs.
I see all these cuts are assuming outside pitches. Do we not want to go inside out if the pitcher is pitching inside?
Hey Jay. We definitely want to work on being able to inside out the ball if the pitcher is giving you an inside pitch. We qualify that is an advanced skill in the box and will look to cover that in future episodes. We wanted to start with some basics for players who may just be getting started, then we can advance into some of the more refined techniques like inside-outing a pitch. Appreciate the comments and will look forward to incorporating those skills future tee-work episodes.
Just wait on the pitch and in a pinch if needed just move your back foot to the outside and hit it that way.
It is certainly possible to swing inside out on an inside pitch. However, I would argue that it's far more difficult and less effective. In baseball, you would be absolutely right. Because it is so much easier to place hit in slowpitch compared to baseball, I think it would be more effective to hit an inside pitch to a hole on the left side or middle of the field. Not to say that it can't be done but if we are going off of the law of averages I think hitting inside pitches to the left side will give you better results. That being said, if the inside out swing is something you are good at and can execute effectively, go for it!
Well it's just honestly hit as a Judy as opposed to hitting it as far as you guys are doing. I like both styles. Like you just said if a guy plays up, hit a rope past him.
Don't inside out. Just kill it to right field down the line for a home run. Let that high pitch get deep over the plate. Maybe above the mat and swing with everything going to right field your step, body, hands and follow thru. Don't dip. These guys break it down good.
When you guys hit oppo are y’all trying to cut the ball also? For me I find it easy to cut pull side but difficult middle/oppo. Tend to swing up more middle away
I would love to cut the ball to the opposite field but our skills aren't quite there yet. I think, ultimately, being able to cut on oppo hits would be ideal. However, I don't think it's necessary to be effective. Great question and thanks for watching!
Looks like I need to challenge you to a round of Base Knockers!
Don't tempt us w/ a good time @BatFlipBP! We are always up for a friendly challenge!
Love it
For me going middle is going oppo because I'm too impatient
We hear that! It's hard to let the ball travel before attacking, but it can really open up your game if you let it travel that extra 9" and you start burning the 3-4 hole. You will be an unstoppable hitter!
Just wanted to say thank you. As you know there are so make things you can use and do with the JIM_MER STICKS.
I use mine all the time! It's great for warming up and great for practice. We highly recommend. Thanks for making it!
I appreciate all you videos and interviews some very helpful information i always pass on to the beginner. Thanks again
Just wait on the ball and catch it farther back in your stance
Correct! Catching it later is going to naturally change the exit trajectory of the ball. We wanted to start with something a bit simpler for players just getting started before getting into some of the more nuanced topics like inside-outing the ball, etc. Any other tips you have about working backside?
I love watching you guys hit and stuff. We finished our fall session last night. And this is how I hit anyway. I have a guy lined up to hit coach in January. So you cats keep doing your thing. I will always be watching you guys
Only thing I can think of is moving the tee to middle inside on you. Just to see if you can hit the clutch shots. I call these Zero or Hero shots. I would love to be able to hit with you guys but I'm in NC.
Thanks! We genuinely appreciate that.
We may be trying to move around a bit next year to do some collaborations with other channels. NC was on the shortlist. If we ever make it out that way, we will let you know!
Taco 🌮 Wednesday?
Tacos are great any day that ends in a Y! Seeing you swing on Monday made us think you have been diligent about your tee work. Great game!
A 20 min video to tell people to look for an outside pitch? No thanks.
Hey Jed, thanks for the comment. Sorry we didn’t impart any new knowledge about backside swing mechanics, but would love to hear any tips you have. There is definitely more to the backside swing than “looking for an outside pitch”
