Prime the oil filter protects the otherwise dry paper element from possible Micro tearing when new engine oil blasts thru on first startup as new oil pushes on oil, not paper. Provided filter is oil soaked new filter can be horizontal and half prime still protects. Great video, you can service my Mazda anytime.
It is cool because its a professional wrench from Cornwell tools which can only be purchased off the tool truck and cost more than $300. More than the novice mechanic is willing to pay.
If you're a novice mechanic, it would be a good investment to make. Better having piece of mind than over or under torquing bolts which can be a costly repair in the future.
CHETRY AR 10w 30 is best for engine 0-20 only exists in USA because of stupid epa and mileage requirements manufactures face. I always put 10w 30 on all new cars during summer and 0-30 winter
Wouldn’t you want to fill the car with oil first and then check for leaks around the drain plug and the filter after the car has been running before you put that panel back on? How else would you know if it was leaking or not unless there was oil back in it?
You would know quite quickly if it was leaking badly as it would be dripping onto your driveway. I always check that the old o-ring gasket is not still attached to the oil filter connection. After you have done an oil change several times you don’t have to worry much about it. On my Mazda 3 I replaced the oil drain bolt with an EZ-oil change plug. I never have to remove the drain plug, just move a little ball valve lever to drain, then move back to close. Makes the job much easier.
This would be so much easier without that plastic cover in the way, but I will hand it to Mazda, they made the filter and drain plug really easy to access once the cover is off.
The plastic cover just pulls right off, no tools required. (And it pops right back on) I leave mine off in the summer, and reinstall it for the winter. I always remove it when changing my oil.
What type of screws are the first 2? I know you said you can remove with 8mm socket, but I'm having trouble finding the exact part/screw #. Thank you! (my access panel/cover got damaged, and I want to replace the 2 screws/plastic push inserts).
Question: I have a 2017 Mazda 3 2.0 skyactiv G and the manual says to use 0w-20 in USA AND CANADA, but it says everyone else has to use 5w-30! What’s the deal here which is best for the longevity of my investment??
+Onix Junes 0w-20 is better for fuel economy but once the car is up to normal operating temperatures both 0w-20 and 5w-20 are going to identical in viscosity. But for initial start up 0w-20 does less harm to the engine than 5W oil.
Both are good. 0w-20 for short trips (for better cold start), 5W30 for longer trips. If the engine is using too much oil about 0W-20, you have to switch to the 5W-30.
You HAVE to use a filter socket? I have a strap wrench and an oil filter wrench but no socket.. so I have to buy one? Is there room for the above mentioned tools?
i wanna learn how to change my own oil, doesnt seem that hard. i just wanna know how long it takes for the oil to cool down? like, if im just turning it on to drive it from front yard to back yard, only like 20 feet?
+소라 Thanks for checking us out! If you are only moving it a that short of a distance it should be okay to work with as the engine won't have time to fully warm up. If you're divining it for several miles it would range anywhere from 10-30 mins to have it not burn your hands, but you should be good to go as soon as you move it.
Hi, I just did this for the first time today and this video was really helpful. I didnt have time to wait for all the oil to drip out and then I filled it with 4.5L of oil but im worried I put a bit too much as the oil on the dipstick while hot is a little bit higher than the max dot (little less than 1cm) Is that a problem?
@@briany3002 this answer is very manufacturer specific. There are brands that can be very sensitive to over filling (like Porsche). You shouldn't be deliberately overfilling the oil to "be safe". That's not safe. You should fill it the amount it needs.
@@gilberttorres3161 She already mentioned that in the video that, when the new oil pressures the new filter when it is dry, it might wear the new filter therefore she is priming it to avoid wear/tear by the first pressure.
I told my ex gf to use 4.5 ounces of oil .... she said the old oil looked like more than 4.5 ounces ...... I told her because it's old ...... only takes 4.5 ounces when it is new ..... opps ...... just kidding :)

Great job! Fast, simple and straight to the point.
Thanks for watching our video! +HaiDef
It's good the filter is fitted directly straight up as it allows you to prime and fit very easily
These originally came with a hex drain bolt that is known for stripping. It’s good to get a regular drain bolt like the one in this video
I love your how to videos, makes it easy to tackle things & make it easy to order the parts too. Thank you

That's a cool torque wrench

For some reason I thought the oil plug was an 8mm hex bolt...I could be wrong or it could be different on different model years.
Thank You
The 2014-2017 mazda 3 bm and 2012-2016 cx5 and mazda 6 have 8mm hex bolts any mazda newer has a 17mm drain bolt
Mine has the 8mm hex bolt too (using 8mm Allen wrench or Allen socket).
What is the type (brand name) and source of the filter wrench socket used in this video?
I have a very similar one, got it from Walmart I believe

You're fine. The amount of overage you describe isn't enough to hurt the engine.
Youd need to overfill it more than half a quart for it to cause damage. I always fill it with about 4.7Q just to be safe
