Used Yamaha FJR1300 Newer VS Older

  • So we had a viewer ask recently about a used Yamaha FJR1300 newer vs older, meaning is it really worth it to buy a newer model FJR 1300 motorcycle in order to get the 6 speed transmission etc. In most cases I think that if the money difference is substantial then it is not, but let's talk about it! Sport touring motorcycles are a huge opportunity to get a GREAT used motorcycle for a lot less money, and a used FJR1300 is no different!

    From an owner who has covered 50,000 miles on a gen 2. The upgrades to the Gen 3 make a huge difference. 6th gear/slipper clutch is wonderful on the motorway, my old one used to vibrate like crazy, my 2017 is so much more refined in every way. Cruise Control is a MUST have for touring, as is electronic suspension. Too many details to mention here, but the fact Yamaha made every little piece that little bit better, adds up to a superb sports touring weapon. When you think these bikes are bullet proof and will easily pass 100k miles, yes it IS worth that extra dosh to get those tasteful upgrades that make a difference in the real world. Thanks for the video!

      Thanks for the perspective! While I do really appreciate the upgrades I am also one of those guys that will tour on a retro bike with no cruise, no wind protection, or anything hahaha...so to me even a gen 1 FJR is an amazing touring machine! Always great to hear from an owner as well!!!

    You got some of the information wrong or just left it out by grouping everything older than 2016 together. The first gen was 01-05. The biggest issue with that was that the air flow directed a lot of hot air onto the rider. 06 fixed that, increases gearing slightly, changed the suspension a bit, and changed the looks a bit. 2013 got a lot more changes including suspension (standard or electronic in the ES model), bodywork, and most importantly a ride by wire throttle system with cruise control and traction control. 2016 just added a sixth gear and LEDs to the 2013 model.
    For me it was worth upgrading from an 05 to a 2014 for cruise control and less engine heat on my legs. I don't feel any need to upgrade to the 2016 model though because I agree that the 5 speed is fine.

    Having ridden a 2017 with all the goodies I have to say that I now want one.
    Those helical cut gears with the slipper clutch and cruise control are a delight not to mention electronic adjustable suspension and rider modes. All FJR1300'S are lots of bike for the money on the market but the gen3 is the best investment and could easily be a forever bike. Many will outlast their owners! I'm thinking about it....

      I just picked up a 2013 gen3 with 20 000 miles after riding an ex-police 2009 gen2 with about 80 000 miles , and the cruise control is magical!;)) Here in the Netherlands there are loads of average speed camera sections where cruise control made my life a lot better! The ride-by-wire makes the throttle so much lighter.
      I've loved the 6th gear on my Super Tenere, but will have to do without it for another 5-7 years till I have to change bike again when I'll be able to get one with 6 speeds.

    There are 3 generations of FJR1300.
    Gen 3 added 6th gear in 2016 (only 500 rpm drop and Hwy speeds) but also added inverted forks, slipper clutch and fly-by-wire throttles allowing cruise control. These are far more important than 6th gear. Also better venting for cooling summer riding.

    • @scottthurman6135

      The 2015 has cruise control..First year of it..Don't feel I need a 6th gear but it would be nice for the long haul...I do notice some heat in summer but nice in winter..LOL

  • @stevekitella4781
    @stevekitella4781 4 роки тому +11

    You'll never find a 2015 close to a2016 in price, the gen 1 bikes had a rider heating issue, as the heat off the motor was irritating in the summer, especially in stop & go traffic. This was somewhat eliminated in gen 2 models. If you're not riding a lot at nights, the led lighting on gen 3 models isn't much of a factor, but occasionally riding down dark unlit streets with the leds is absolutely incredible and everyone will notice the difference. Sixth gear is noticeable in lowering the rpms at higher speeds, also less gasoline being consumed. The slipper clutch is great as well, no cramping in hands from stop & go traffic, the only change I did there was the levers, stock are too straight, farther stretch for fingers to pull, change to shorties with a bigger bend toward handlebars, night and day difference. Handling can be affected by so many factors, the gen 3 I don't believe had any improvements over the others. Depending on the upgrades the bike you're looking at had to offer must be considered as well. Example the top box, is it a color matched Yamaha or a givi, that isn't color matched and much cheaper to buy? I've added a carrier to my Yamaha to box, which adds to the carrying capabilities of the box. Anyway for a few thousand more, you're getting the best engineered and advanced product Yamaha had to offer, which at resale would be highly sought after. Spend the extra and enjoy the best there is! You'll be glad you did!

    i owned a 2005 fjr (gen 1) and loved it. i sold it when the kids were little and i miss her...i will buy another fjr soon. i have know idea what a slipper clutch it, but most comment that it is great. to me the cruise control is a must. i had a throttle miester and it just didn't perform as electronic cruise control does. i'm looking at 2013 plus under $10k with under 30k miles. that is the sweet spot for me...everyone will have their own sweet spot. i don't ride as much as i would like but when we do ride we take long trips (a week long vacation from KC to Colorado, Smokey Mtns, Galveston, Etc.) so the creature comforts are money well spent in my opinion. i will say the engine heat at low in traffic on the 05 fjr was a bit extreme. i've heard the gen 2 and 3 are better, so i'm in for a newer gen. no doubt, alex is right...any FJF is amazing. i have owned a harley and a honda vtx. there is no comparison for speed, handling and fun...the fjr is so much fun to ride. lastly the gen 2 and 3 come with standard anti-lock brakes. the 05 didn't. luckily i never needed them, but on a bike a split second can be the difference from life and death, so i'm in favor of the ABS braking on the newer gens. great video! thanks alex!

    Traction check
    Comfort check

    I've got a 2006 model in AE trim, which had the YCC-C electronic clutch. I did add full electronic cruise control, along with a larger touring windshield. It would be difficult for anyone to convince me the latter version are "better." If you're purchasing a 2016 thru early 2021 model, make sure it's had the recall performed for defective gearing.

    I have a 2019 and love it. I went for gen 3 after trying the gen 2 and decided slipper clutch and 6th gear worth it.
    However I fitted MV bar risers as lower back pain became intolerable. This made the steering geometry better for handling and easier for slow speed manoeuvres.
    Buy the Gen 3 because if you don’t you will always regret it.

      Gen 3's are still very expensive compared to the gen 2. I drove both and opted for the gen 2. Then I spent some of the price difference on mods and accessories (both were bone stock, as most FJR's unfortunately are). Got a mint Gen 2 single owner for $4,000. Maintenance records back to 2009.
      With part of the price difference, I bought: A Delkovic exhaust, Corbin seat and smuggler trunk (looks amazing, much more comfortable than stock, and the trunk is very functional for when you dont need to ride around with your bags), new tank grips: top and sides, v stream windshield (which is awesome), upgraded breaks and tires (rosso 4's and HH Sintered pads), K&N oil & air filter, FilterMag, full tune up with full synthetic Motul + iridium spark plugs, Shorai lithium battery + charger (much better than having the heavy ass stock battery mounted up that high), I bought a CarbTune Pro and synchronized my throttle bodies, poor man's cruise control, hyperpro suspension front & back, Ivan's ECU flash, I bought this ram mount that screws into the brake fluid reservoir and has 2 balls for attachments for which I bought a cup holder attachment and a wireless charging phone mount, and highway pegs.
      At this point I've still spent less than the Gen 3 I was looking at and now it runs better/smoother, gets better fuel economy, is faster, handles MUCH better, is more comfortable, looks better, sounds way better, and overall is way more fun and practical (in the twisties and on very long rides) than the Gen 3.. & for less money!
      Of course, you could do the same with the Gen 3 and im sure it'd be better than mine, but it'd also cost you probably $10,000 more and it won't be $10,000 better. Really just boils down to: how tight is your budget? If your bank account won't notice a $20,000 charge then go with the gen 3. For everyone else, gen 2 is definitely the way to go. You will not regret it (unless you're too much of a baby to use your fingers, and MAYBE pick up a wrench, to adjust the suspension yourself & you need a computer to do it for you.. spend 20 bucks on a throttle lock, boom you got cruise control)

Even at 100 mph. my 2007 is just starting to work( pretty tall 4th and 5th gears). I do wish I had the cruise control though. The various suspension modes would be cool but not a deal breaker. The 2nd gens are awesome rock solid bikes. Of course if I had the cash I would probably get a newer one. Just because. The older body work is a bit more appealing to the eye imo.

    I have a 2012. There is NO convincing argument for a 6 speed transmission. All those saying they wanted a taller top gear, that's an argument for a taller 5'th gear, not for more speeds in the transmission. Magazine writers complained about the lack of a 6 speed and that's why you now have one. It needs a 6 speed like a Harley tractor motor does, not. If an R1 can span 0 to 180 mph with 6 gears, there is no reason an FJR can't span 0 to 150'ish with 5.

    This exactly the video I was and have been looking for. Now through it, I am missing the older comparison. How does a 2004ish do? Utter trash at this point or actually a cost efficient way to get into serious sports touring? What to be wary of, costly maintenance etc. Thinking of fork leaks, engine/transmission issues and such.

    • @AlexSimmons11c
      @AlexSimmons11c  3 роки тому +5

      Can be a VERY cost effective way to get into serious sport touring. At this point a bike that old of any kind will need to be gone over mechanically when purchased used anyway, and an FJR is no different. As a fairly heavy machine it definitely can have issues with leaky fork seals after 25-30k miles, so if they have not been replaced they will likely need it. As far as major engine/trans issues I have not encountered any in ANY FJR, if maintained it seems these will literally run forever. An older FJR may not be as fancy, but for the money a well-cared-for older FJR is a fantastic sport touring bike for the money.

    Hi Alex, did they make the new transmission where it can be removed without pulling the engine unlike the older one? hope I got that right? thanks for the review Mark

    • @AlexSimmons11c
      @AlexSimmons11c  3 роки тому +1

      Since these are a uni-construction style gearbox that is made as a part of the engine (using the same oil etc) I would imagine that pulling the entire powerplant is still needed in order to remove the trans. This has been the case in most Japanese motorcycles I have worked on.

    Hey Alex, My comment today has nothing to do with the video of the day. While I have been dreaming of getting a RE 650 in a year or two I am thinking perhaps I might consider a different bike. I am thinking maybe a good Kawasaki Z400 or Yamaha MT 03. I want to get a pretty new bike because I am not mechanical. I also want to have the benefit of fuel injection and abs and stuff like that. My only concern is that I might get board real quick with a "beginner bike". I am not looking to go crazy fast , really just looking to do some back road twisties around 50mph. I think I need to get a helmet and do some test drives. What are your thoughts on some of the beginner naked bikes? I know you a Yamaha fan but you always give good info despite any biases you might have. My reason for looking at "beginner" bikes is that they are less expensive than an RE 650 and they are probably cheap to insure. I am not one who needs to go crazy fast , I just want adequate power, don't want to get blown around if I do go on the freeway, and want to get riding. Peace my friend, Eric

      Hi Eric, I would definitely get a helmet and do some test riding! I think the MT03 and Z400 are both killer bikes and great choices in a smaller naked bike, and not necessarily just for beginners. The MT03 shares an engine with the R3 but with more upright positioning, and actually is a very peppy bike with killer handling, so a great option for experienced riders as well as beginners. Same with the Z400, I personally prefer the MT03, but that is all preference, they are both GREAT. I will do my best to go do ride and reviews on both bikes soon if I can find both locally!
      If not I'll still do a head to head video for you soon!

    Hi Alex, I am the one that like all your rods behind. :) Joke. You probably drove the new FJR (latest) and older generation. I wonder how tall are you? I am 186 cm and I am thinking of FJR (new from the dealershio) as my future bike. Do you think that stock screen sucks for all riders that are my height, or do you know somebody that can confirm that for him is OK? (and he is between 185 and 190 cm tall). Now I have Suzuki SV650 and it is my 6th bike. How quickly can someone adapt to the weight of FJR? Do you find it too heavy? Thanks. I appreciate your work and all your dad`s rods behind there. :) Would you buy a new FJR, I mean the new model that may come out in the future?

    • @AlexSimmons11c
      @AlexSimmons11c  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Danijel! Ok so at 186cm in my terms that puts you just a little over 6 feet tall, I myself am 5'9" or about 176cm. For me the stock windscreen on an FJR is great, and I use it in the lowest position, so for a 186cm or so rider I think it will be fine, you may just have to ride with it in the "up" position which is easy since it adjusts with a button! I think going from an SV650 you will have to get used to the weight, it does feel heavy to me after riding smaller bikes, but I find the FJR handles the weight very well and you get used to it very quickly (most people).
      I have not met an FJR yet that I didn't like, so if a new one comes out I would not hesitate to buy it, BUT I would likely wait a year or two and find a used one to save the money hahaha

    Best upgrade?
    Cruise control.
    5 speed has a higher top end speed than 6.
    6th gear is an overdrive. Nice to have lower rpm at speed though.
    I have a gen 2 auto clutch now and love it and the analog speedo.
    If you can get a 3 for 6k...well worth it IF it has cruise.
    2? 5k.

      Different kinds of bikes to me, the Wing being a full on comfort touring bike that also happens to handle well for what it is, whereas the FJR is for touring if you also want to get really aggressive sometimes. Depends on which fits your comfort level and riding style! I prefer the FJR...but the Wing is a legend in the touring world for good reason.

    Uh, last I heard there are currently three generations of the FJR1300. The third and latest began in 2013.
    Big surprise: Japanese engineers don't get driving/riding in America. That little cultural phenomenon has been around since the Fifties. In the JDM, I'm guessing they sell approximately zero FJR1300s a year. Licensing is restrictive, travel distances are relatively short, and speed limits are comparatively VERY low. Many Japanese struggle with the idea that in the US, it is possible (and nearly legal in the West) to ride all day at 90 mph. So, yeah - six gears, please.

    • @AlexSimmons11c
      @AlexSimmons11c  4 роки тому +2

      Hahaha yes there are technically 3 generations, but the gap and jump in redesign was so much more so in 2013 that I generally draw the line there and condense it down into 2 generations. The changes otherwise have been smaller quality of life stuff, not so much a complete redesign, and even the first gen was such a phenomenal bike all the way around that if one can be found reasonably priced I still recommend them
