Make a Window AC cool to 38 degrees - Easy Hack

- 3 Year update. This solution is going strong. I have this unit in a 4' x 8' x 8' walk in cooler. In Texas it can get pretty warm here but this solution continues to keep my cooler between 38 and 45 degrees. I did have it freeze up one time when I tried to get the temperature a little bit lower. So there is a line that if you cross it and the system runs too long, it will freeze. When that happened, I turned it off for a few hours and then set it back to the previous setting and all was good. May not work for all situations or room sizes but does work for mine.
*As with all electrical jobs, make sure your unit is unplugged and extension cords are unplugged before attempting this hack. This worked perfect for me but I take no responsibility for your results.*
This video is a hack that will allow standard window AC units to run colder than the factory minimum. I am in Texas and this unit will be used to cool a walk in cooler. Temperatures outside will be between 60 - 85 in the early deer season. I plan to have this unit cool at 38 - 48 degrees. You can use calculators found on the web to determine the BTU’s required for your project. For mine, it specified a 8K unit but I had a 10K unit so that is what I am using in this video. I will post a video on how I built my walk in cooler as well. Questions are welcome.

Update: I have used this setup twice now to keep deer cool in my diy walk-in cooler. I learned that there is a break point where the unit will freeze. For me that is around 36 degrees. So I set this to run at 38 degrees and it worked perfectly. With the mechanical thermostat I used, the temp range when set to 38 degrees was about 10 degree. So it would turn off at 38 and then back on at around 49. So for my purpose, this is a success.
please can you tell me , does freon only reate one temperature and then the duration lowers or raises the room temperature .
for example isnt the unit always blowing cold air at somewhere around 60 degrees until it reaches the desired room temperature .
and the way your doing this is still coming out at 0 but because its a smaller room it runs alot and youve tricked it into running a longer cycle until the room temperature reads 38 but not the actually air coming out of the air conditioner . is that correct
SCOTT: You can also plug your night light into an inexpensive AC timer to force a defrost cycle every 15 or 30 minutes. I've been doing this for several years in our MBR, and it prevents compressor freezeup.
Im just trying to figure out do you have your ac unit in a fridge? Haha i thought most units only drop the temp in the range of 20 degrees difference than outside air?

These days in the last 5+ years or so the window A/C units will only cool to 65 F even though you can set the number to 60 F. I have 3 different LG A/C units, and each of them will only cool to 65 even if they are set on 60. I'm very mad about this. I need it cooler than 65 F in my room at night. 65 is too hot.

You can also do this by taking the thick blue wire and fan wire and wire directly to hot then when the unit receives power it will automatically turn everything on bypassing all compressor safetys
U could also use a thermostat with on off programming for an extension cord and set it to the temp u want and it will turn off or on - usually sold in the agriculture industry

I am totally stealing your idea and using it elsewhere.
I will build an insulated box around a window unit. In the box I will have a hepa filter fan pushing cold air directly onto my noctua cpu cooler inside the computer.
I will 3d print a shroud to direct the airflow inside the pc, and another shroud to direct the air from the fan to the computer case. You have solved a problem I have been contemplating for years.
How to cool the cpu cheaply and effectively for record breaking overclocks.
In the crazy computer market, people are buying All in one coolers that pump water in a loop to a radiator with fans going. But this only pulls in room temp air to cool the cpu.
If you cool the radiator only then the tubing will collect condensation and drip on the expensive electronics.
One guy I saw ran the air conditioner directly into the top of his pc. He tested water cooling with an All in one unit. And an air cooler. The air radiator from Noctua is massively more efficient at heat transfer.
Then I thought of bringing in sub zero outside air in during the winter time. And I might try that down the road.
But getting an AC unit to cool the air down to 4 degrees C and have a fan blowing cold air at the Noctua cooler at 500 cfm... I might be able to set an overclock air cooling record.
The records are divided by type of cooling. Liquid Nitrogen users currently hold the world record. But I just want to get the air cooling record.
I think the number 1 spot is currently held by a Ukraine guy named Andersky. He has the record at 5.9 ghz with a CPU cooler - Noctua NH-D14 and air temperature is +2 C, on an Intel Core i5 2500K
The second place goes to a Japanese guy testing his pc outside with 0 degrees C
I think I can get to at least the top ten list.
Condensation will get you
If you cool the entire computer though inside of said box it'll all be the same temperature so you Don't have to worry about condensation

Why not just bypass the a/c built in thermostat with the black line thermostat that you are running the night light with? Seems like you have an extra night light and some wire in there.

concept is good however the light bulb makes me nervous of the possibility of catching fire. im also not a fan of electrical tape. shrink tubing would be better.

Made me laugh. Backwoods hillbilly sh*t is correct. I live in a 2 bedroom condo. 800 Sq.feet. I bought a 14000 btu window AC which is good for 800 Sq.feet.
Here's the flaw in your logic. My unit like most units regardless of the btu's if you set the temperature to 60 degrees will keep the AC running constantly as well as the compressor. My condo temperature never goes below 71 degrees. So it runs full steam all the time.
Bypassing the thermostat is useless as it already runs non stop. Controlling the unit with external thermostat set at 40 degrees it will just run non stop since the temperature will never get that low.
So you did some funky electronics to accomplish what the AC is already doing.
Instead of talking smack you two may want to know that backwoods does not equate to hillbilly, "backwoods people as you call it" are 9 times out of 10 far wiser than city egos that talk the smack and most importantly... You are talking smack incorrectly and don't even realize it LOMFL! This is mostly for insulated rooms, walk-in coolers and figuring out ways around the stupid prices that many city folk are trained to just spend for convenience. Would it not work better if you took the thermostat wire and connected it to a plug and then plug that into a thermostat wall adaptor that turns the power on and off depending on the setting on the new thermostat?
No
The air conditioners thermocoupler would tell the thermostat to turn the AC off long before it would cool to the desired lower temperature. Your idea would work if he was wanting to achieve regular AC temperatures which are warmer than this.

God bless y'all. New York guy here who hates artificial heat and radiators during the winter. Everyone at my house will put it at 75F which is way too hot so I just counter by putting an AC in my room that runs cool 62.
Problem now is that the last AC that I had was rattling and making noises to where I couldnt sleep because it was so loud.
So I went out and bought a Danby 12000 btu and the compressor turns on for 2 minutes tops then goes right off. Thought it was defective, so I bought a GE 14000 btu AC. SAME FUCKIGN BULLSHIT, cost twice as much.
Then I thought, there's GOT to be either a smart chip in there somewhere making it to where IF it gets below 62 it wont turn on the compressor even if you set it at COOL.
Might have to do this before I empty ten 10 round clips into these pieces of eco baby earth day shit.
It would suffice for me to have 58 on all night with a fully working compressor.
@@TheCuriousNoob I could give zero fucks about "efficiency". I want it cold, period. Colder than what perhaps you may perceive as "normal". I understand what BTU's are. You might be as much of a fool as I am apparently because "more BTU's" doesn't imply everything will be colder/hotter. That is the assumption; that higher BTU means more power to cool, hence, colder temperatures.
The problem is that no matter what, most if not all new air conditioners are programmed to not cool below a certain temperature no matter what you want.
It will automatically turn off the compressor when it reaches 64 degrees no matter if you put it on Cool and High. Once the sensor senses that temperature, it turns into an over prices fan. They don't tell you this because they want to force you into their "guidelines".
All you have to do is trick the temperature sensor into thinking it is hot in the room and the air conditioner actually keeps the compressor on to make it as cold as you'd like.
So shove that bullshit up your environmentally friendly baby ass, EPA.
relax . all you have to do is put something that warms the compressor main switches in the fins area like this video shows , a small night light (wrapped in aluminum foil ) connected to power strip with a mechanical timer switch , on 30 Mins off 15 mins 20 mins , whatever you find comfortable after you test it , , real easy to do.
@@kingdommusic5456 Yep. Pretty much got 2 temp controllers with an LED 3 watt bulb and they keep that new AC working as if it were 100 Fahrenheit in that room, turns off the compressor as it hits 50 on the fins.

Good video, Scott. I like your supplemental thermostat idea, since that provides greater temperature control to the room you are cooling. I had to add a timer to my cooling circuit (ua-cam.com/video/jFo3IJy17Cg/v-deo.html) to address the problem of frost buildup that blocked the AC fan. But, apparently, you've found a magic temperature setting on your thermostat that provides a melting cycle for the compressor. By the way, I think the probe set in the cooling fins by the manufacturer is called a thermocouple. ............ Ken
