It took me about a year but I now make all of my beats with out quantizing. Sounds a 100% better! At first it's difficult but don't get discouraged, sooner or later you'll be able to do it. Just start with small things like not quantizing the kick drum or the hats.
1:48 you preachin'. I bought an MPC2000XL back in like '02 and it changed my life. Experimenting with timing was always a lesson. Great technical tutorial. 💯
this was very useful for me, such a simple thing but it really makes a difference for the drums, im always about making my drums better so this was a huge help, one of those things you always hear in tracks but never realised it was just this swing technique, thank you
isnt the amount under swing affect the early or later not the swing ? being that they are in the same row i think amount affects how many ticks earlier or later not the swing percentage i might go into to manual later to confirm that ?
Great video. I also like how Marco Polo approaches swing. He leaves the kicks and snares on time but swings other sounds. His reasoning is that it makes it more mixable for DJs. I notice the same when I'm mixing beats.
Maybe you already peeped this, you're associating that AMOUNT parameter/control with the SWING % above it, but it's on the same line and actually applies to the direction of your SHIFT TIMING param, so it offsets the note events on the track forward or back by however many number (AMT) of ticks. This should be reflected in STEP EDIT. I could be wrong.
It's one of my go to's for the swing. In the Step Edit prompt whatever pad you press will be shifted, or press none and all is shifted. Super useful for the dude.
Teach brother.......Dope vid. I rarely use this feature because I gotta play around with it too much. However, once you find the right settings, it can make a difference.
I agree to that. Since I love that loose feel of the drums, I've been trying to move in the same direction in order to get that. Because my drumming is stilI somewhat unstable, I quantize the snare drums.
I know on the electribe 2 and Roland jd xi synth/groove boxes, there is 0 to plus 50 or negative 50 on the electribe 2, and 0 to 100 on the jd xi? Is there any way to go below 50 on the mpc's, or can you just go up to 75?
Wow, so this is the famous MPC swing function. Thank you so much for your videos! I own a MPC 2000XL SE2 and really like to put it to use in the future. Watched a few of your videos so far - 100% pure, useful dopeness! Subscribed! If there's anything you may need, let me know - as I like to give back to people who share & give. 1
Meta, did you install the correct operating system for the zip/cardreader? Go to the akaipro site and download and load it into your mpc before you install the card reader.
Not really sure how common it is but mine freezes every now and then. I just hit main menu key or slap it like a pimp and sometimes that seems to work...LOL
what is the difference in sound really the way you do it? which was with no time correct? ive tried messing around with it on mpc ren..but havent mastered it yet..
pituchez The main difference is in the lovely imperfections that our human timing has compared to machines...I just mainly prefer my natural timing over quantizing at all
I feel the same way and you know more about this machine than I do my friend. I was thinking about getting an MPD and starting to use software more directly in my beats but I duno, I'm oldschool and I feel like sometimes there's something to be said for the old ways. My style isn't really making super clean sounding bangers anyways knowhatimsayin? hahah I like a little dust on the track... peace Jfilt, You got my support and respect.
cool video man. my mpc is acting crazy. It is saying insert disk. i attempted to install a card reader. i might have to reinstall the floppy 1.2 not really sure.
Great Vid man. Can you do a video on Three Six Mafia Style drums on the MPC 2000XL? I want to know how much swing they use even though it sounds straight quantized.
Hi dude ! thanks for the tips. I just don't understand something, I thought I can just change the swing before writing a sequence, if I modified the swing after writing, nothing happen. I maybe loose something ? Have a nice day
@@soniksource Thx ! I got it now. I was into the time correct window searching like crazy but by default the time is 001.01.00 to 001.01.00. Just I had to change the length of the sequence so that it could apply.
it def changes it only on the track im highlighting for me. if i put the same pattern of hi hats in track 1 and track 2, and apply swing while im in track 1, only track 1 moves.
hitting "do it" applies swing to the already recorded track. if you change the swing percentage to say 60%, even if you dont click "do it" (you can click cancel or main screen), anything recorded while its set to 60, in any track or even sequence, will have 60% swing. hitting "do it" only reapplies the swing to an INDIVIDUAL TRACK. swing function on mpc is very weird, one of the trickiest things to figure out not sure about the "shift timing" part though, i dont even touch it. i only use the swing percentage

good old school hip hop production techniques on your channel... i enjoy it
take quantization off and you'll get your swing!
deadass i was in class playing the intro to your video over and over again
Solid tutorial bro...thanks for putting me on.

Is it common to get new memory every now and then, for lets say when you 2KXL freezes up or stops @ MPC 2KXL start up screen ?
Not really sure how common it is but mine freezes every now and then. I just hit main menu key or slap it like a pimp and sometimes that seems to work...LOL
Thank for the helpful tips.

yea..i dont quantize my drums. but i cant apply swing and turn timing correct off on mpc ren ;(

Omg I’ve been so so blind. How did I not realise this! This is why you got those subs man 😂
LOL
Dope video g! could you explain how to quantize your drums? thanks!
When I go to Timing > Open Window, I do not see swing%? Is it because I am running OS version 1.14 and not 1.20?
ChataFahKop ummm thats weird, i have 1.14 as well, cursor must highlight the word timing and then open window and it should be on right hand side
Oh you know what? I had it turned off.. Thanks!
my pleasure!
thanks for the upload this really helps out alot..
Homie, I really dug the vid. Been wondering how to get that sound. Keep diggin!
Bugera369 Thanks 4 watching!
u know i got u fam no doubtt
What is the best timing if you're using drum loops in chops?
imo using your own timing aka no quantizing
cool video man. my mpc is acting crazy. It is saying insert disk. i attempted to install a card reader. i might have to reinstall the floppy 1.2 not really sure.
Damn didn’t know you could open window on tempo track by track - thanks man!
my pleasure
Thanks for that bruv! That was much appreciated.
Super dope homes!!
THanks a lott!
Coooool...good lookin my man.
I have the 500, and u only get just swing % to adjust. With the music that sounded nice!
it doesn't show swing on my mpc, it says I have version 1.07 is that why?
robert jimenez my go to place for technical questions like that is mpc-forums dot com
and does quantizing give your drums a better feel?
good breakdown man
Very helpful thanks
my pleasure

FRNCK JSSLD you have to go into your time correct window and hit “do it” to all tracks
what CopparacciBeats said Peace

kool
it's the os i got to update it peace. go from 1.20 t0 1.14
i always sing along to the intro in these videos. jaja its just a habit now.
Unless you hit a specific pad in the timing window, you're moving every note in the sequence. It doesn't matter what track you're "on". C'mon dude...
Do you know how to do it per track? or only in one sound?
it def changes it only on the track im highlighting for me. if i put the same pattern of hi hats in track 1 and track 2, and apply swing while im in track 1, only track 1 moves.
