    Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

      Nekejwowsn I can't adopt because my home enviroment isn't right for any adoptions. Not all people have the right lifestyle to adopt a dog, it is filled with screaming toddlers and a rescue dog isn't right for me...

    • @crosita1
      @crosita1 8 років тому +97

      +theindigolemon A really good breeder will have bred for temperament and done some socialization with the puppy before releasing him or her to a buyer. A rescue is an unknown in many ways and if you don't have time to work through issues that may not be apparent right away, it is unlikely to work out in the long run. All my dogs are rescues but they are not for everybody.

    • @xsoano8519

      ***** a puppy is better because it will grow up with the childrens noise so will adjust quicker. However a rescue could be skittish and not like little kids running about.

    • @viktorhalaj3029
      @viktorhalaj3029 4 роки тому +2

      @@renah.3459 yes. They wouldn't let him inside so he is outside type of dog. Something like a guard dog. He is probably around 4 years old. When he was a puppy they did take care of him pretty fine. But as he grew older he needed a lot of walks and stuff. He used to run away a lot since he is a husky but they didn't want to lose him so he is now on the chain all the time and when somebody from the house comes out he seeks attention and love but they usually ignore him or scream at him if he is too noisy. This type of taking care of your dog is somehow considered to be completely normal in my area and I can tell you that at least 4 other dogs live like this on just my street alone. And this is way better than what some people do to their dogs. Don't even want to talk about local cats. Dogs have it way better here than cats so you can imagine how cats are treated here. What a fucking place to live.

    With your upcoming video about "pit bulls" please discuss how that is NOT a Breed of dog but a group or types of breeds and how different they can actually be. Being in a city I have to constantly deal with how people assume it is a breed and they are all the same and act the same, obviously with the aggression myth along with it. It is so bad to the point of breeds blacklisted from apartments "Pit Bull" is listed as a BREED and any dog with even a hint of that adorable face gets rejected.

    • @zakgeorge
      @zakgeorge  8 років тому +45

      This will be covered. :)

    • @mexicanine
      @mexicanine 8 років тому +29

      It IS a breed of dog. The American Pit Bull Terrier. So many people lump them together with American Bullies, Amstaffs, and American Bulldogs but they are all different and have different personalities/needs. Please don't spread false misinformation.
      All dogs are different, and yes pit bulls can have dog aggression, but that's not a bad thing at all. People need to know so they can make sure that the breed is good for them and so they can accomodate accordingly. Border collies and heelers have herding instinct, Golden Retrievers love to swim and retrieve, sighthounds love to run and can rarely be trusted off-leash, and a lot of bully-breeds like Pit Bulls can have dog aggression (different from human aggression). None of these are bad, they are quirks of different breeds.
      Lumping all blocky-headed dogs and saying "pit bulls are a type not a breed" makes it so that the GOOD, real Pit Bulls are lumped together with aggressive Dogos or other bully-breeds.

    • @raisinmydog
      @raisinmydog 8 років тому +5

      I'm mean, you don't have to call out Dogo as an "aggressive" breed either.

    • @mexicanine
      @mexicanine 8 років тому +4

      Raisin Robsi It was an example of another bully breed that is also targeted in BSL, that is commonly mistaken as a pit bull. Replace "dogo" with staffy, ridgeback, rottweiler mix, etc. Any truly aggressive bully breed individual that attacks a person or dog is lumped together as a pit bull by the general public/media. Which is what my point was, misrepresentation adds to the statistics that "pit bulls" are aggressive when in reality most of them aren't even real pit bulls.
      I love dogos, they are obviously not an aggressive breed in general.

One was chewing on my shoe, another wanted to wrestle but then one just walked up to me with absolute confidence, zero aggression and fell asleep on my lap and I knew that was the dog I wanted. She’s afraid of no one, friendly to everyone, and is REALLY easy to train if you can get her to focus.

    Great training videos on this channel! Really simple to get to grips with. I was watching one of the other video's starring Jampa (I think it's the correct name) the Pitt Bull breed/type and some of the myths are just unbelievable. Good owner=Good dog, IMO.
    I do want to add that I've owned two Rottweilers, a Staffy cross Collie and a Doberman over the last 10+ years with no convictions to my name! Haha!

      Recycleonwednesdays - I'm no professional but I have had a little experience with working with ex-racers many years ago as a kennel keeper/walker with a charity :) I personally think given the life they would of had as a racing dog, in that environment, they might be just about ready to relax and just be looked after. They may have had cruelty also. I've read many times that they are brilliant, resilient family pets that don't need the high exercise levels many are lead to believe...quite the contrary- a soft place to sleep and regular/daily moderate walks, good food, perhaps a play and run twice a week...but, I can't say for sure, having not lived with one, yet! :) As for being un-trainable or stupid; I can't really see that...as every dog, young or old, has it's unique view on the world and what motivates it. Needless to say, I don't think it would be in any way impossible for a ERG to fit in and adapt to your home. I think once you knew the individual dog you'd find ways of training what was needed/wanted. I must just say that the dogs I met were very intelligent, and extremely well behaved- walked on the lead, house trained, responsive and very very sweet. They are one of the oldest breeds (if not the oldest) and they just require love. Every dog can be trained

      Welcome! I do have to say, depending on your rescue- do the research as they have all been through different/varying degrees of the "racing" life and some may need more understanding and patience than others, they are all different! :) I hope to one day adopt one, they are just so so sweet!

      You're welcome too, Zak! I love your approach to training. There's lot's of people out there with varying methods, but yours I think is fool proof, direct, easy for the dog and owner and just, faultless! Rather than needing a 'personal meeting' with the trainer, you've helped so many which can't afford it with great vids. You've definitely taught me how to do things quicker. My dog is so relaxed and really doesn't need any training but he might like to finally learn "paw" just for fun! He was from a dear, lovely family that were facing a crisis and needed to move house. I prob can't buy your book here in the UK...but, I can make a donation.

    Hi Zak, your knowledge and training techniques are phenomenal! I learnt more from this one session, and watching you in action with different types of dogs, than anything Ive ever seen in years!. The thing I love the best is when you said, it is better to reward the dog for doing right, than correcting them for doing wrong. Thanks for the great videos!

    If the main thing keeping you/your family from adopting a dog is allergies, there's three things you can do:
    1. Build your immunity up for dogs The more you expose yourself to dogs, the less that they'll affect you
    2. Groom the dog more often (bathing and brushing). You'd need to do your research to learn how often you can safely wash your dog first, however (you wouldn't want to over-wash them and therefore dry out and damage their skin and coat). Again, regularly bathing your dog will help to greatly reduce allergic reactions and irritations.
    3. Look into hypoallergenic breeds. Do your research!
    (This works for cats as well.)

    One of my dogs is a level 1 energy, the other a level 3, easy. It was really difficult at first to train Hendrix to be calm, but now he is a little angel. I would love to see shelters get better at assessing dogs, since many honestly don't know how to test a dog. Most casual dog owners wouldn't be able to handle a highly energetic or intelligent dog, and if matches were a little better, maybe it could fix this issue.

    #4- read about chihuahuas

    Hey great video! I just wanted to ask if you could do a video about training a "skitish" dog, idk if that's the right term but my dog Axel is a black Labrador almost two and is incredibly high energetic dog, but he is very skitish or afraid of new things or even just commen thing, he doesn't really like the loud noise of the vacuum and he is always alert of all the noises around the house. Also there is one other thing I would like help on and that is when he sees another dog outside of our fenced in property he raises his hair up on his back and runs along the fence barking, idk what's the cause of this and how I can prevent this from happening but I believe he is afraid of them rather than dog aggressive, he also barks at people when the walk into the the fence but he has never attacked or bitten anyone. One thing I have done to help him is play fetch with him in the yard, now this is his favorite thing to do and it normally gets his attention on me even when someone has came into the property. I got him a spray citrinil spray collar and it has also stopped his behavior to barking even when it's off him, I think there is probably a better way to address the situation besides a spray collar. Hope you read this and possibly make a video on this topic and help me out! Thanks so much👍

      You sound like you are making progress with fetch especially, so congrats on that! Dogs get good at what they practice and fence barking is one of those things with a built in reward. The dog wants the passing dog, car, or person to go away, barks, and hey the scary thing goes away! So of course they will do it again next time. Best is if you can block line of sight where these triggers pass your house so your dog is not given practice driving them off.
      For skittish jumpy dogs, depending on how extreme sometimes anti anxiety meds help them calm down enough to learn what is not something scary after all. For milder skittish behavior, just practice changing the trigger noise into a predictor of a treat incoming!
      Finally, you can work on general self-confidence by doing scent training games and you may want to try Real Dog Yoga to help the dog learn to calm down. Book is on Amazon and I love it for my stressed dog clients.

    Hi Zak, thanks for this video. In my experience, dogs can take a couple weeks to months for their true personalities to come out after being in the shelter. Of my own dogs I adopted, the one who was shy and cautious in foster became my laid-back service dog. The one who was brave, cute, and more confident turned out to have extreme anxiety and reactivity to dogs, kids, and men. He still is cute though. My latest addition was exuberant and desperate to meet everyone at the shelter, very vocal. Once home he hardly barks and has a racer energy level--bursts of athleticism with lots of couch potato napping. He is a little anxious about children and only jumps up on me, being more reserved with everyone else.
    I am concerned about you predicting a dog to be good with kids without seeing them around a kid. Most of the dogs I have met who are not good with kids are fine with adults, apart from those with a high level of anxiety about everything (but a few of those are actually fine with kids). I work closely with my local shelter and matching can be challenging.
    There have been some scientific studies on single-session temperament testing on shelter dogs and there is no significant correlation with behavior after adoption. Read Beware The Straw Man for more details on studies of various behavior methods.
    Anyway, I like a lot of your videos and I recommend them to my dog training clients, but this is one I find suspect. In my opinion, the best way to find a dog who is a good match is to visit it more than once, and never adopt a dog for a household with young children without the kids visiting the dog first--and even then, be prepared to never leave them together unsupervised and you may need to work with the dog if anxiety about kids develops. Fostering to adopt like you suggested is very smart. But I think what is most important is to know that you can't know everything up front--that is part of the fun of adopting is that you both get to know each other. If behaviors develop that you don't like, have your resources ready so you know what to do to make changes, or at least who to ask.
    Finally, animal shelter staff can often get a better feel for a particular animal's personality over time than a single visit (even from a behavioral expert) so I encourage people to talk to staff and get their take on a dog as well. The staff member in your video was self-disparaging but I think she was underselling her contribution to the adoption process.
    You are right, however, that energy level is an important factor in compatibility. Grooming requirements are another. Social skills and drives (dog & human) are also a compatibility issue, but I don't know if they are possible to predict. And at least many behavioral aspects can be molded with training. Not so for exercise needs or grooming requirements.
    Anyway, thanks again for posting. It is an issue I have been putting a lot of thought into.

    • @crosita1
      @crosita1 8 років тому +4

      Try food dispensing toys. They reward the dog for manipulating them and could encourage play. Also be careful not to scare or punish your dog. Finally check with your vet to make sure dog is not sick or in pain. Some rescues have no idea what to do with toys so you need to teach them!

    I have often noticed how Zak kneels and uses his gaze or "eye training" - He actually made a point of warning on this method. I believe that with a first case scenario one shouldn't get to close to their face/jaws or paws, but he undoubtledly has a way to avoid personal injury - My suggestion to Zak is that he makes a written alert on the video about the perils of this technique. Most people and even many trainers aren't suited for this. BTW I want Mason!! Great Pit!!

      Bryan, I too have never heard of a shelter dog costing 'thousands' of dollars. But if the shelter is a "no-kill" facility, the staff there are committed to care for every dog surrendered to them and if the dog has a serious health problem such as heart worm this requires expensive (and highly toxic) drug therapy plus a huge commitment of time and effort on the part of staff. One of the best dogs I've ever met was was found by Animal Control wandering ill with heart worm and no id on the streets of CHico, CA, where we had just moved. He was a wonder! He was a champion at 'fetch', learned anything after one or two training sessions.

    • @mysticrose29

      The reality is, owning a pet *does* cost money. The $100-200 you spend to adopt the dog goes toward the food, medicine, and spay/neuter for that dog. Once you adopt, you'll still have to pay for future food, vet bills, toys, etc etc etc! Generally, if you can't afford an adoption fee, you probably can't afford to own a dog. Keep that in mind, and remember, they pay you back many times over in affection and companionship!
