Mack Brown's main issue at UNC was the defense. The offence was usually pretty good - but the defense was like a sieve. They gave up 70 points to James Madison at home this year.....
As a unc fan, not only that, it was the let downs to mediocre teams that held us back. We’d be 8-0, then drop a game to uva or Georgia tech which derailed our season.
@ agreed - during Mack‘s time i can‘t recall a single time UNC upset a higher ranked opponent - but there were plenty of times UNC was upset by lower ranked opponents.
I can remember when Bobby Bowden was the coach at WVU. My oldest brother had graduated from Marshall the year before, and I was spending the night with him and his wife in Huntington the night the plane crashed. I was 11.
The beautiful - but cruel - symmetry of this great game is that for every contest won, you have one lost. Not everyone can go 12-0, 11-1, 10-2, 9-3. They play each other. And no matter the quality of the hire or the player personnel, the darwinian math will always work out that way. Someone's going to win, someone's going to lose - and always at the expense of each other. 🏈
Coach Mack Brown is a great coach but one thing he lacked when he was at Texas was adversity. He was so caught up with his success that by the time the 2009 championship game happened with colt getting injured he wasn’t the same after that.
Coaching College football is a REALLY tough assignment. In the "old days" a Coach usually got 3-5 years to see if he was going to work out. Of course, they didn't make $4 million and up per year either. Now, of course, they have to deal with NIL - do they have enough money to sign the right players? Will our current star players stay or be swept away by a tide of money? Will our really good OC or DC be wooed away by promises of more money and maybe a HC position? If our star player(s) gets hurt will our AD, fans and donors understand and give the Coach a break for this year? Did you notice we haven't even mentioned schemes, practice, academics/graduation, and many other important issues that can and do arise for student-athletes, Coaches, donors, the University Administration, NCAA, obnoxious fans, and even more obnoxious reporters. Maybe the Coaches who got fired are the lucky ones.
Gus didn't get fired, he resigned and took the oc job at FSU, why not??? He already got the bag from Auburn in 19 cool mill, so why be HC and go through headaches when you can sit back out of the limelight and be oc and still live very comfy!
@@dcilibrary Do you have a friend that you would walk away from 14 million, so the friend can save face? Because that is the only scenario that could have happened with your scenario. The AD couldn’t have said “ If you don’t quit, I have to fire you.” Gus would have said “ Here is the address to send the 14 million. Thank you buddy!” It really doesn’t matter though. Everyone has moved on, and so can we. Best of luck to UCF. I sincerely hope they are successful. 👍🏼 Go Noles!
Mike Locksley should have easily been on this list he needs to be fired. Maryland was improving year over year with him but this year was just down right awful. He promised potentially big things for us this year. Talking about how we could be in the top half of the Big 10 especially not having to face Ohio St, Michigan, and Penn St every year. We go out and only win 1 Big 10 game and only finish second to last because of how bad Purdue was this year and the 1 win we did not deserve it was a fluke comeback win over USC.
Well as a WV fan it was obvious for him. The joke 3 man D line zone an he fires his buddy from his previous job an then sticks with same joke defense that kept brown from being a winner. Loyalty will get you fired. Brown sure knows that now.
Tom Herman had some of the best talent while at Texas but every season they underperform especially after the 2018 season and there isn’t a season so underperformed than the 2020 Texas Longhorns. They had all this talent and yet they ended up having close games to teams they should’ve destroyed (especially to teams like Texas Tech) and lost to teams that they should’ve beaten especially Oklahoma considering how they weren’t as good as they were the last couple of seasons with Spencer Rattler playing.
If you can’t have any successes at a Florida school I don’t feel sorry for you. There too much talent around them. You should have some type of winning almost every year.
1:47: Its been a rough few years for Tom Herman since he left Houston to go to Texas. He certainly has enough money. Guys like him may be better off taking the Chip Kelly route and become a coordinator without all the baggage that goes with head coaching today.
I read a couple of hours ago that the school is keeping the coach for 2025. It's the right thing to do. He's only been there one year and they lost their coach last year from the domino effect which started when Saban retired and the coach at Washington left to replace him.
I cant think of a bigger fall in recent memeory than Herman. He was such a big name for such a long time but that Tx debacle sealed his fate. LOL no one would even know the name of Gus Malzoan if he didnt have Cam Newton. The guy is forgetable AF.

But he is way over the hill and the game is much different today with the transfer portal and NIL. Way too much for a 73 year old man.
Mack Brown has sent more UNC players to the pros in recent years.
True but he was a dinosaur. The game passed him by
That’s crazy considering they never won anything meaningful under him.
@@NKA0713 I thought Dazz Newsome was great player. They have almost beaten Clemson.
@@the1magageneral323 sending players to the NFL doesn't always mean good coach. He was mid at UNC
The only guy on this list that would qualify as a "Big Time Coach" would be Mack Brown. And his problem comes down to him being 73.
Malzhan resigned from Central Florida not fired
"I first started watching college football in 2013."
Fuck, I'm old.
I know right. I got into college football when I was in high school, back in like 2003-04 😂😂

Ryan Walters and Purdue: Saved from being the Worst Team in the FBS this year because they had neighbors across the state line at Kent State.

Colt McCoys shoulder was a curse to UT football
I would have added the Tulsa/UCF games in the 2000's where Malzahn was the OC.
You forgot Brian Kelly

@@Dan-zs4rk why would he leave before he got paid for his buyout? Around 14 million. Doesn’t makes sense. He left. They were not going to fire him.
Exactly! He has his money. Who needs the portal, NIL, recruiting and dealing with the media and alumni s____ the HCs have to deal with?

Neal Brown will be successful. Pretty sad it wasn't WVU.
no he won’t😭😭😭he’s ass at coaching but a great guy
He needs to be a HC in a small school. Somewhere, his milktose schemes can work.
Mack Brown was way passed his glory days. NC getting embarrassed this year especially allowing James Madison to score 70 at home.

Neal Brown would fit at FAU or FIU

Why is Florida International one of the toughest places to win?
Unrealistic expectations.... Coaches can't win with different rules for different schools and conferences....
Mack Brown wasn't as good as hyped up to be. Vince Young covered up his holes

Mack Brown to UCF
