Going out on a limb here. So a company called Sensicore used to make Octave Strings for violas. They were bought out by D'Addario, who still offers Octave Strings for violin (makes your violin sound like a viola), but not for violas (makes the viola sound like a cello). Question is: Does anyone else make such deep sounding strings for the viola to make it sound more like a cello?
Thank you for your demonstration and comments. How do compare the Obligato (that I have been using and enjoy the warmth of the tone) to the Dominant Pro strings?
Hello Jeff! IMO... The dominant pro strings are MUCH easier to work with... They have more color variety and speak quicker. They feel less hefty under the fingers.. And they have faster response. Lots of people enjoy playing on oblgato... They are a premium string.. I prefer the playability of the dominant pro... Also I like the Warchal amber strings.. You should check out My video review of those as well! Let v me know how this works out for you!
Thank you for suggesting the Warchal strings - I hadn't known of them, and will consider your review of them. Thank you for all the insights that you share.
I’ve been having a hard time finding strings that match my viola in tension. She is a bit temperamental. The Obligatos seem to be a nice tension fit. I actually love the way they sound and feel. Thank you Maestro Houston for producing the best viola content available.
That's great... The obligatos are definitely good strings.. I am also going to try the Warchal amber.. They are supposed to be great.. And I will try them soon.. Thank you for enjoying the channel!
The Obligatos di sound really nice on that viola. I've been following your channel for a while, as a violin player. But I just got a viola 😊. It's a newer viola, made in 2018. It definitely needs new strings and I'm trying to decide what to get. I'm new to violas, but this viola doesn't sound too bright. It pretty medium. So I don't think it needs Obligatos. I don't want strings that are sluggish, but also not too tight, hurting my left hand.
Thanks for the review! I'm trying to start playing viola again but want to get new strings. What do you believe are the darkest non-gut viola strings? These or another brand?
I don't know if these obligatos are the darkest... But I think they would be good for you based on the playability factor... Let me know what you decide!!
I definitely think it is worth it to buy good strings! It will help your sound and also help clarity and you can get more CONFIDENT! Let me know what you decide!!!
@@RonaldHouston I decided to get the pirastro evah pirazzi because i think the obligato makes my instrument too dark. anyway, thank you for the content you create for alto and for helping me make a decision
The Obligatos produce a deep, warm sound. Thank you for this demonstration.

As it’s a new instrument, will it open up more or do you think it’s more or less stable/broken in?
I think the instrument needs to open up a bit!
Hello, my viola is not expensive and I am not very professional in viola do you think buying this string or evah gold is a waste of money?
