Martelé-Stop-Sustain-Release! Great Bowing exercise to play legato on the viola (or violin)
An incredible excercise to loosen the fist finger falange, thank you so much!!!! Always have struggled with vibratto and haven't had teachers that explain it very clearly
#11_🇺🇸
You might want to go to a compenent luthier and see about putting an arch on the bottom of your bridge (aka the "crotch"). Should improve your sound and response a lot.
Thanks for your vibrato video… a useful and different way to approach it. Could you please tell me what the Campagnoli Etude was as I don’t seem to be able to find it anywhere and it is beautiful. Thank you!
practicing vibrato in my first $39 violin😢
Thank you Ronald!!
Awesome how you can do that 🙏 I am still learning Vibrato and not using it in pieces although my teacher was always pushing me to do so. Bowing is more important to start with, I totally agree 🤗 Thank you so much for this wonderful video Lesson 🫶
Shouldn't you be using a baroque bow?
Joseph Joachim warned that vibrating every note is "circus music."
Vibratoless practice is an effective learning technique.
Thank you for this insightful overview of vibrato.
it's funny how many of the same things that Ronald does, I do myself, just from years of doing it and 'learning' what works and what gives poor results, like early on, getting a single groove down the middle of a round cake of rosin leading to learning to circling the rosin over the bow, to have the cake diminish evenly, et al. I really do so many of the same things it's uncanny. Then again, maybe it's totally predictable, idk.
Oh my goodness this worked like instantly for me I can vibrato but I be so tense omg this worked right away thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks 🎉👏🏻 When are you going to upload the next episode?
Thank you I’ve been curious about this!
Thank you for a great advice😊
1 practice slowly to train your ear (intonation) 2 contraste 3 tempo 4 style 5 articulation ( legato, shorter, .) 6I also tkink fludity ( commes with technique ... )connections, understanding notions of phrasing ( I think more important than just dynamic itself ) ( discover that left hand can play a main role with phrasing if you cannot find what you want with the bow " here I think the 2 first bar of e flat sonata brahms) Timing more than rythm The vibrato variety Sound colours to express words the emotion you want people to feel or the type of sound, colours. According to you character and the needs : let go or more control. Posture, be grounded and free. The way you feel while playing . Find tricks against stress . 😂😂 Good Luck .
GOLD as Always! 🙏🏆🥇💛🔑
Beautiful! What is the maker of his viola?
Jacques Féréol Mazas (23 September 1782 - died 26 August 1849) was a French composer, conductor, violinist, and pedagogue.
Slow practice is the fastest way to learn a work correctly.
Great tips❤

Looks like your Viola got into the coke again, haha :P Looking forward to trying some of these exercises 🎻
Solid Gold! Thank You Mr. Houston! 🙌⭐️🏆🥇💛
Thanks! I found this video to day, practising left hand flexibility. Do you have some advice how to exercise stretching the 4th vinger on the viola (as f.e. some parts of schradick exercises demand)
Thanks for this very important video ❤ Rosin is kind of religion for some players - I nearly have a drawer full of it 😉. Here is my special tip, which I got from a professional violinist as a secret: BRUSHING THE BOW regularly. All needed is a new(!) soft tooth brush. Brushing the bow from tip to frog direction is kind of cleaning process and also removes to much rosin. First release the tension of the bow so that you can also reach deeper between the bowhairs with the brush. I never thought of bowhair direction. It is smoothly upwards to the tip and more grippy downbow to the frog. Because of that, downbows need a bit more energy against hair directions 😏 After the first preparations of my bow with rosin on the new bowhair I only apply rosin from frog to tip (3 strokes) to get it deaper into the hairs. I use Pirastro Oliv with Larsen strings. It creates a warmer sound. I'd like to try Andrea next time. May I ask what type you recommend for violin "piacere"?
I use lonesome pine.. Available on www.violinzone.com/products/lonesome-pine-rosin This is great rosin.. I recommend original and smooth! Thank you for all your insight!!
Rockin' Ronald!!! 🙂
I almost feel guilty... I am getting lessons from a master, without paying conservatory tuition... WEEEEE-HAAWWWWWWW!!!!!
Great!!
I'm a beginner. I'll add these concepts to my journey of discovery - THANK YOU!!!!!!
Great... Keep me posted on your journey!!
Really helpful and insightful tutorial. Do you follow the bowings on a particular edition? I really like them and would like to learn them, please. Thanks!
I use the Chester edition edited by watson forbes. But i completely modify it myself
@@RonaldHouston That's the edition I have, but I find the bowings too choppy. Are you going to upload the rest of the Prelude, I really like the way you play it.
It is already sold out!
it is back.. inventory is updated.. thank you for the information!
It's back! Just like the Sun!!!
thankyou for explaining the advantages for using this particular chinrest... I would be twice grateful if you would recommend a shoulder rest that would have the same sopportive qualities for violin playing... thankyou Seán
Hello Sean... The efel violin shoulder rest is awesome... You can get at violinzone.com... There is original model and plus model.. Both are good... Thank you so much for watching the video... Hope this helps!
Nice video. Can I get a version with aluminum or titanium attachment legs for hypoallergenic concerns?
Hello.. It comes with standard hardware.. But on Amazon you can buy these..a.co/d/09b6oZ5l Thank you for watching the video! Hope this helps!
They are pretty expensive. Can it be returned if it isn't comfortable?
Yes.. You can send back for a refund if it does not work for you! Thank you so much!
Well done everyone. An excellent performance.
Thank you so much
You very much remind me of John Lovitz 😂 thank you for your lessons! I needed a reminder to drill these excercises so my vibrato doesnt get weird.
Sounds great... Which John lovitz movie do you like?
@RonaldHouston well, mine is "Mom and Dad Save the World"!
well, mine is "Mom and Dad Save the World"! @@RonaldHouston
Thank you❤. I will try this!
That's great. Let me know how it goes
This is paying off. My thumb moves where it likes now and my hand posture is set only by the knuckle contact point and the left elbow. Here's what I've started doing to train my left elbow to stay forward: fascia exercises. I do a slow movement against imaginary resistance bringing my left elbow forward and back to reshape my fascia. At the same time I raise and lower my right elbow against imaginary resistance as if changing strings. It feels like hugging an imaginary viola to my heart. With my fascia reshaped play posture will be natural in a few weeks. That's the theory anyway.
That's awesome.. Keep practicing this..it keeps getting better and better.. Proud of your progress!
Merci !
Of course!
Thanks!
Thank you very much, this Video ist very helpful to me. I just stopped my Vibrato Practising because I realised I was gripping to hard with my thumb. Gripping causes tensity and stiffness. It is all about Flexibility, feeling comfortable and beeing as relaxed as possible. I am working on it now and hopefully making the progress I want to. Great exercise to be more relaxed with the thumb! 🎻💕
Wonderful!
thank you~ ❤❤❤❤
You're welcome 😊
Wow 저의 고민을 해결해주셔서 고맙습니다.👍
좋아요. 좋아질 거예요
Thanks Ronald!!
Thank you for watching!!
This and learning to drop my arm's weight instead of digging was the biggest thing that improved my sound for sure.
That is awesome that it helps you!
