Locum consultant in our NHS department comes all the way from Canada to pick up shifts for a few weeks at a time! That's how lucrative it is.. madness! (Not madness for him obviously.. he probably can't believe his luck)
Most actually come here from Canada not for how lucrative it is but to maintain the status of their GMC registration. I have a friend who comes in from UAE
We have a similar problem in Egypt. Another point to mention is that lack of consultants equals lack of education for us junior drs ! We don't having educational consultants/trainers in the systems. We fill a position and whoever is senior to you has to teach & guide you. Since 2013 the senior drs have been leaving the country for better working environments which ended-up with me a fresh graduate working 48h in the ER by myself , teaching myself , with no to call for help ! It'll only get worse ..
Hi Dr Ollie I hope u can assist me on this problem. I am A fy1 doctor in UK. I have done a locum STD hrs 9-5pm. When i got my payslip they only paid me 2.5 hrs instead of 8hrs. ( 9-5pm.) Do u know why, or maybe tell me who do i refer this problem to? Thx in advance for your help.
Need to take it up with whoever you booked the shift with - if you're an FY1 I presume it's for the staff bank at your trust. I'd speak to them first and see what they say.
Sir my elder brother has recently got a job at google of about 280k us dollars which is about 210k british pounds. How common is this salary in the uk doctors? Plz reply. Thanks a lot.
Extremely uncommon for a doctor in the UK to earn that much. I would estimate that the average consultant salary is around £95,000 to £100,000 but it does depend on a lot of different factors.
US doctors make FARRRR more than uk doctors becuase we have free healthcare in the uk whereas doctors in the us are private practitioners so have charges and medical bills etc.
Internal locums yes - most trusts will put out the locum shifts to their own staff before going to an agency. Usually as long as it's within a department you've worked in before it's fine.
u only get taxed on the surplus u own so stategically, no u dont get penalised. if u earn over ur tax bracket, u only get taxed on the excess you've earnt over the tax bracket. so someone earning 130k, is better off than someone earning 100k.
Yes, correct his point was unclear but I think he means it becomes less worth it if you start earning in a new tax rate as you take home 40% less than the advertised rate vs 20% less (+NI of course meaning its more like 32% vs 42%).
Ur wrong about the tax or maybe didn't clearly express urself, the tax bracket doesn't work like that. You only get taxed for the money u earn above the tax bracket at thta percentage
You're right, it was poorly expressed in retrospect - I think I chopped a bit from my sequence by accident, what can happen is you can be mispaid by your trust by earning too much too quickly and they switch your tax code temporarily!
Your comment about tax makes no sense. You pay the tax on the bands not the actual income. Lets say the higher rate is 40k for simplicity sake, you earn 41, you only pay the 40% tax on the 1k from 40-41 and 20% on 12570-40k
I think he explained it poorly but what he probably meant is that it becomes less worth it if you start earning in a new tax bracket since the work is very ad hoc, can be during unsociable hours and all of the other drawbacks. being taxed at 20% + NI on the locum pay vs 40% + NI is a big difference. If I'm making 60% of the advertised rate rather than 80%, I'm less likely to go for it.
Really concerning for the long term health of the NHS, surely it would be more economically viable to actually fund things properly than this supply teacher nonsense lol - of course there will be situations when doctors need to be replaced at short notice but specialties like psychiatry which isn't well supported at the best of times basically running on locums is ludicrous
Locuming is not that lucrative, locum consultants in Ireland are paid 70 EUR/hour after tax. Many locums are not included in on call rota, so you might not get access to this source of income either.

@@officialdeniran yeah agreed. They're probably much better off doing locums in Canada if it was for the money

How many locum shifts would you say you're picking up at the moment whilst you're on the academic rotation?
A short one every couple of weeks at the moment - just 4.5 hours. But an easy £200 for not much work
STONKS! Interesting stuff as always Oli

Has annybody actually seen a GP in the las 2 years? Are they even real?
FYI The Tax bracket system is marginal so you will always be better off if your a higher rate tax payer than a basic rate 20% tax payer

Actually a really good video 🙃

What a surprise that the poorly paid doctors don’t want to train and want to locum.
poorly paid?
Experimenting with thumbnails I see
I think we can all agree this is a complete success
