Yes. There’s a small, obvious slip of the tongue with the date at the beginning. (The fact that I follow up the statement by saying this was a near-hundred years before the inception of Mario should be the giveaway here.) Please enjoy the video I’ve spent three weeks on instead of tearing apart errors.
WAHOO! It's finally time to talk about one of, if not the most recognizable pop culture icon in history. He saved the western game industry, and continues to star in groundbreaking titles to this day. The true super star!
Rest in Peace Lou Albano (1933-2009), Danny Wells (1941-2013) who played Luigi, and Bob Hoskins (1942-2014) who cosplayed Mario, we'll never know how they would feel about this new movie, but John Leguizamo (who played 1993 Luigi) says he doesn't want to see it, that's his choice
Mario truly is the Mickey Mouse of gaming. Been around since basically the beginning and has been so many things to so many different people. Everyone has their ideal Mario and that’s perfectly alright.
Mario was a very important character to me as a kid, and as such I've loved most of the outside media. Cartoons especially, with my favorites being the Super Show and recent movie, which felt like a childhood dream fulfillment, I can tell you. But I'd be remiss if I didn't mention how unfortunately underrated the Donkey Kong Saturday Supercade was. It was before my time, and unlike his other 3 cartoons, was in copyright limbo and never reran or put on home video. I remember reading about it in a Nintendo Power special magazine. No pictures of the series were shown and it only had a little blurb mentioning it, so there was this amazing mystique about it that followed me for years. Took the advent of UA-cam for me (and I'm guessing a lot of you out there) to actually see, and all things considered, it's a fun little cartoon. Even had an episode with Stanley the Bugman from Donkey Kong 3. Probably the first video game character deep dive in outside fiction. Though I was disappointed that in finding Peter "Optimus Prime" Cullen was the voice of Mario, expecting something similar to his Monterey Jack with an Italian or New York accent, only for him to basically do a younger, higher pitched voice, similar what he'd use for Eddie Spencer Jr. in Filmation Ghostbusters. I highly recommend checking out the series on YT. Though, the Donkey Kong Jr. cartoon you can probably skip. It's not terrible, but it's not nearly as good.
This may be separate from Mario, but it should be worth mentioning that while Nintendo wouldn’t see their IPs on the big screen until Detective Pikachu, they did have an omnipresence on television with the Kirby animated series Kirby: Right Back at Ya! and most notably the Pokémon anime series which would continuously run for 25 years with a bunch of movie spin-offs. And there was the planned Legend of Zelda and Star Fox series at Netflix before leaks lead to them not getting off the ground.
I wish I still had my NES (including the Mario games; "Duck Hunt"; "Dance Aerobics" for the NES & "River City Ransom" ) & some of it's accessories (I had the NES Advantage controller & the regular NES controller; both the Light Gun and the NES Zapper Gun; R.O.B.; NES Satellite & The Power Pad for games like "Stadium Events/ World Class Track Meet" & "Dance Aerobics"). Note: my daughter used to watch both the DiC Mario cartoons (my daughter still "does the Mario" to this day. Ha ha ha) & the DiC Sonic cartoons when she was a kid.
I can’t help but feel a big sense of sadness that Popeye hasn’t been super relevant lately, when clearly if it wasn’t for him, we would have never have had Superman or Mario. I really hope he can return one day.
I grew up with 3 Mario actors simultaneously when I was young: Lou Albano from the Super Mario Super Show, Charles Martinet in New Super Mario Wii/Mario Kart Wii/Paper Mario Wii, & Bob Hoskins in the live action Mario, & I still love all 3 to this day. Super Show is _atrociously_ written, but you can tell that Lou Albano & Danny Wells are having a lot of fun as Mario & Luigi despite the rotten material, & I've always unironically loved the live action Mario movie, no matter how much hate it gets.
Great video. I know the first Mario movie is more or less a meme now but I found it so hilariously bad I actually enjoyed watching it. I can't believe Mario is already 42 years old. It makes me feel old too
Fun Fact: did you know Chris Pratt and Charlie Day voiced by Mario and Luigi in the 2023 film well they also voiced the first ever Lego Movie, Lego partnered WAG Chris voiced by Emmet a construction worker hero of the entire Bricksburg and Charlie Day voiced by Benny a 80’s Spaceman from 2014’s The Lego Movie, and… they got the sequel.
Wahoo! It’s about time for the princess saving, overall-clad plumber, and mascot of Nintendo to get his evolution covered by the one and only Dave Lee!
In my opinion, the 1993 film was decent, but a big reason why it flopped was because it failed to respect the source material. Something that the new film does a lot better with.
I haven't played any video games since Pac-Man in 1983. But I'm always delighted to see a Pop Culture Evolution from Dave Lee. And this one, funnily enough, was no exception.
Here's to a great Evolution of our Favorite Plumber & Video game ascot loved the whole world over! Thank you Dave for making this video the greatest yet!❤
@@DaveLeeDownUnder I'm glad you're saying "Brothers" when "Bros." is on screen. It bothers me how people say "Bros", when there's a period meant to emphasize the shortening of the word, but not the pronunciation of the original word.
I was hoping the German Mario comics got a shout-out lol but otherwise, I really appreciate this deep dive into various Mario media, mate. It really puts the time period each game was released into perspective.
All-time favorite has to be "Super Mario Bros." At first, I was only able to play the game at the local bowling alley when I was there with my parents for their once-a-week league night. Eventually, my brother, sister and I received the NES, which included the game, for Christmas and I was able to play a lot more. Eventually, while playing into the "wii" hours of the night and into the morning, at (approx.) 2:00am I beat "Super Mario Bros." for the first time. Anyone who accomplished this task back in the day knows the thrill of not having to read, yet again, "Thank you, Mario, but our princess is in another castle." 😄
I’m SO happy that you finally covered my favourite franchise of all time! And to answer your question at the end of the video, my favourite Mario game is Odyssey, although I think that’s already quite obvious 💀
Was really hoping you would do this!! Love when a really long and informative video about something I'm really into shows up in my feed while I'm in bed. Lol
This is the best super mario cartoon evolution and charles was wonderful as mario for these years and my favorite game was super mario galaxy and I've seen the super mario bros movie from nintendo and illumination and it's the best movie of mario so thank you dave plus I can't wait to see the voice evolution of mario!
I still have two of the Valiant Comics compilations, namely "Battle Against Bowser" and "Meet the Koopa Kids." My Gramma bought them for me at our local Gabriel Brothers way back in '91. I used to have more, but they've been long since lost.
I've known very little of The Super Mario Bros aside from the Mario Karts that I was playing on the Will U, and then when I saw the trailer for the movie from Illumination, I was pretty interested And then on Easter Sunday I went to see it along with my family and I absolutely enjoyed it completely.
Some of my earliest gaming memories are of Super Mario. I remember playing All-Stars at my cousin's house on their SNES and just being goofy; chasing Power Ups off cliffs or following them into baddies to die or get hit while making silly voices. Super Mario may not usually be my go-to gaming choice, but he's always guaranteed a good time.
Underwater levels in side-scrolling games where he bobs up and down in water is a completely different concept to quite literally diving, swimming, and navigating through water. “Swimming” along with the other abilities I listed were quite literally advertised as new abilities at the time. But I absolutely know someone pedantic enough would try to call this out. You must’ve forgot that if you don’t have anything nice to say, you shouldn’t say anything.

I meant to comment sooner. Finally you talked about gaming's biggest mascot Mario. I've been a fan of him since I was 8 I'm 30. Super Mario Wonder is my favorite 2D Mario. The 2D series sure has changed since the start. Super Mario Wonder changed 2D Mario plaforming for good. 2D Mario was getting stale from the New Super Mario Bros series not my words. Mario's new design in Wonder and the remake of Mario VS. Donkey kong is probably the best he's looked other than Odyssey. I hope you do include the remake of Mario VS. Donkey Kong of you do another video and include more of Wonder and the remake of Paper Mario And The Thousand Year Door. I like Mario looking cartoony/plasticky and with some realism. Odyssey was his best look to date. Mario looks more human than before in Odyssey. With Mario looking a bit more human in Odyssey brings uncanny valley. Mario saved the gaming industry. That is one reason he's the most important fictional character to me. Mario means so much to me. I treasure Mario especially since he saved the gaming industry. He continues to change gaming as a whole. Mario is my favorite frahchise ever. As you can see I'm a Mario nerd. I'll stop now before I keep going.

There’s an error in the beginning where you say Nintendo was founded in 1989. It was founded in 1889.
He also says Mario debuted in 1989 (instead of 1981) a little earlier.

Great vid
Correction: Jumpman was a Unofficial name for Mario, Mario was always his name.
23:14 I own that book.
I'm not a Mario fan. To me, without the movie recognition, Sonic the Hedgehog is the true star of the cartoon world.
Mario came first and is more popular, so it automatically makes him better
Yep!
5:26- Nintendo made Mario to compensate for a Popeye game and due to their popularity, they ended making one- funny how life works out.
I would expect that you have cartoon analyses on Luigi, Toad, Peach, DK, and even Bowser in the next couple weeks… right? 🙂
