True Points Per Possession | A New Stat to Measure NBA Scoring

  • Points per game is a flawed stat because every player in the NBA has a different number of field goal attempts per game, possessions per game, minutes per game, teammates, etc. People have tried to fix this stat by standardizing it with points per possession, but this stat is also flawed because it does not factor in the amount of shots a player takes from his team. In this video, I explain a new stat that I created called True Points per Possession which is a stat that measures scoring without all of the problems that ppg and ppp have.

There is a reason certain players take more shots (they are better at scoring). If You have Player A and Player B and Player A has a better PPP than B but B has a better TPP you still have to account for why Player B isn't taking more shots. If the coach used this stat and created more plays for Player B it will most likely not translate to Player B being a better player. The question is why is Player B TPP higher. For instance if Player has a strong gravitational pull, it may leave player B open for easier or unchallenged shots. I have seen many players benefit from a better players presence only to flounder when traded into a lead role.

This is actually such a unique stat to think about - the NBA should make it one

Yeah, the traditional stats like points per game and assists per game that the nba provides are good for getting very general information. More advanced stats like tppp show more context about a player.

Amazing video! One thing I thought of though was it’s weird to say KATs a better scorer than someone like Beal when defenses solely focus on him which leads to tougher shots. Whereas for KAT on the timberwolves there’s Anthony edwards and DLO defenses are keying in on.

Yeah, so TPPP measures “who is the best at putting the ball in the basket at the most efficient rate.” It does not measure a scorers role on a team. Admittedly it does not show enough context to truly measure the best scorers, (no stat does) but it does do a better job than any other scoring metric in my opinion.

Great video and analysis. Surprised to see Trae Young still 3rd on TPPP- I thought he would drop.

I think one factor to account for in ppp is assist I noticed that high assists guys have lower PPP because some of their possessions end in passes or assists

Yeah, but if a player takes all of his team's 100 shots, all threes, and makes everyone, he scores 300 points, but his TPPP=300 X (1.0 - 1.0) = 0.
OOOOPS! Maybe it's good in realistic ranges, but this makes me skeptical.

Not a good stat at all bruh. Kobe took 33% of his team's shots because of the slower pace. I love Trae and all but he should not be in the same convo as Kobe bruh. Trae probably took less of his team's shots because the Hawks play fast and have way more possessions than Kobe's Lakers. Taking most of your team's shots isn't a bad thing bruh unless you're super inefficient

UNBELIEVABLE. Today I took my son to Chuck E Cheese for his birthday. He won a game and exchanged his tickets for a Mickey Mouse ring pop but then a large man with a receding hairline came in and SNATCHED it out of the poor kid’s hands! To my dismay, it was LeMICKEY himself!

Today my girl dropped out of school. I was so frustrated because I know she has so much talent and potential, like seriously, how hard can 2nd grade be? 🤦
