Just wish they'd simply recast the actors (to have the correct ages for the novels, sad but true).... forget the stupid PC movement... and make the Zahn books into movies. Nuff said. Boom Star Wars saved and probably better actors and new faces to boot. Heck they could make a TV series off of the The New Jedi Order books ALONE when the Yuzhan Vong take over because of the PC movement taking over the Star Wars universe politically... thus why the Vong were able to take over so easily. Like the previous 8 years for us... have an enemy, not allowed to name it, so no fear of it, afraid to retaliate, thus getting taken over by the false 'new normal' as if we have to be beat down the whole people because we should all feel guilty because of the country we live in... preposterous.
@Da Cashman Calm down, man, Star Wars is all fiction, anyway. And as the Disney Trilogy story wasn't written by Lucas, it was written by fans, a.k.a. fan fiction. Some of us just prefer the fiction of some fans over the fiction of others. But no one said "canon" had to be decided unilaterally. To parallel the scriptural canon, there were many different versions of the canon that developed over time before they were (more or less) resolved.
Matt I think you are the only person who can skillfully, and believable, draw a connection between a box of Apple Jacks and the Dead Sea Scrolls. I had no idea there was that much other stuff among the Scrolls. Very interesting and entertaining
Matt, this has to be one of your best videos. It's creative as well as educational. For me, the most impressive "fact" is the accuracy of pre-Qumran biblical texts that have been hand-written for almost 2,000 years with NO major textural errors. All the very best, Luke, an Arizona Cowboy
If you are against the Apocrypha/Deutrocanonicals being part of the Bible, I would avoid bringing up the Thrawn Trilogy. It was part of the Star Wars Expanded Universe that was canon until Disney bought the franchise from George Lucas. The Catholics would say that Protestants did the same thing with the Apocrypha that Disney did with Star Wars.
The Catholics are wrong. Jewish scribes created both texts. The Septuagint and the Masoretic. Catholics didn't add anything and Protestants didn't remove anything. Stop causing divisions. That being said, pretty sure Lucas is also a Jew.
Excellent further extension of the analogy, Charlie. I love when Protestants call you "divisive" when they literally have been dividing Christianity for 500 years!
@@larrywarner1630 It’s so easy for people to judge others without taking the time to deeply analyze the reasons and the history that lead to those events to occur. Yes, around the time of the reform were dark times for the catholic church, but what was the main reason leading to that dark period? Around 1350 occurred something in the known world that was the equivalent of a massive nuclear war, in the course of 10 years the ‘’black death’’ killed more than 50% of the worlds population, but in the church it took more than 75% of the priests, deacons, monks, nuns, etc. because they were in charge of taking care of the ill and the dying, thus were put in risk from contracting this devastating pandemic. To make up for the lack of personnel to attend the multiple church services and obligations pushed the church to relax the selection process and the requirements (the lord of the manor would now see a young peasant boy that look bright and would recommend him to be a deacon for example), celibacy had been in stablished in the church since 371 (the council of Elvira) but under such circumstances many of the new priest became married, many of them didn’t even had the grace of vocation or couldn’t even read properly, and had no previous knowledge of the early church traditions. This situation starting to generate deep corruption within the church and lead into practices like the selling of indulgences, the bishops were appointed or nominated by the kings lead to corrupt popes like Alexander VI, etc. The “reformation” starting with Luther in the 1517 (he wasn´t the first reformer at that period btw, he own much to Cardinal Viterbo and to Saint Catherin of Genoa) should have been like any other movements of reform that the catholic church had in the past (reforms that lead the church to correct its ways, like the ones lead by Saint Augustin, Thomas Aquinas, etc.) but unfortunately Luther “reform” lead into the split of the church mainly because of some of the new doctrines that he pushed like “grazia sola” (for grace alone are we saved) or “sola scriptura” (that only the scripture was the only authority) that completely contradicted the tradition of the church and the church fathers (many of which received the oral tradition directly from the apostles and many others who were responsible for stablishing the cannon of the old and the new testament for the church). The catholic church had a reform in that period though, reformers like Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Saint Catherine of Genoa, Saint Teresa of Avila, Saint John of the Cross, Saint Philip Neri, etc. Reform led to the council of Trent that paid close attention to some good points that the protestant “reform” offered and corrected its ways.

The Deuterocanonical texts were declared scripture right along with the rest of Scripture from the very beginning, when the Bible was formally compiled into the official canon in 395 AD. Some leaders of the Church went through periods where they viewed these books as secondary, but most of them came to regard them as fully equal to the rest of scripture by the time they died. Jerome initially thought they were not very important, but he too came to regard them as fully equal to the rest of the Old Testament in his later years.
This is amazing 🤣 brings the community to life. That rule part makes me think of how there was always that one kid at school or a camp that caused new rules to be made- there's always a story behind oddly specific rules
Loved the vid! I don't think the fact that because there weren't many fragments from the aprocrypha, it shows that they weren't important and not considered canon. Some books like Joshua, Ecclesiastes got less fragments. I assume not because they were unimportant but because many of the Dead Sea scroll fragments have been damaged and made illegible.
Vasily the Blessed is a Saint canonized by the Orthodox church and his whole thing was running around naked yelling at people and crying while shouting at the sky. "Fools for Christ" are a type of Saint where they appear insane or inappropriate to outsiders but when viewed by the lens of a believer they are extremely on the pulse and appropriate.
IamGrimalkin yeah men like Luther had no idea what was and wasn’t Scripture seeing that he wanted to take out James as well. I put no stock in them to determine much of anything. Their desire to be the opposite of most everything Catholic drove them more than anything else. Sorry. As far as the Anglican view of the Apocrypha which represents the 1611 KJV it is included to be read in the morning and evening prayers. On top of that the 1611 cross referenced the Apocrypha dozens if not hundreds of times between the OT and NT but these references have been lost in later editions of the KJV. In every Bible I’ve ever owned cross references have been given to point to other Scriptures so it’s not an “appendix” as you claim. Now as far as the Geneva Bible goes it was the first to include the chapter and verse numbering to the Scriptures. If they considered it nothing more than an “appendix” then why would they apply the chapter and verse format which is used only for Scripture?? What say you??

Scholars have determined that the Old Testament translations from the Scrolls, coincide more with the Greek Septuagint version than the current Hebrew version. Thus the Dead Sea Scrolls are the oldest Old Testament documents.
From what I've heard, it's a mix. Some are closer to the LXX, (more I think) are closer to the Masoretic (i.e. the modern hebrew version in the main part).

Can't take it anymore Matt! You sit and talk in front of those massive bookshelves with that massive selection of books. Can we get a video on your library, please?
If you're ever over in Israel it's very easy to get to. We were headed back from a tour of Masada, and driving next two the Dead Sea and just about back to the beginning of the dead sea where there was a place to go swimming (also a must do) and looked off to the left (going north we'd be looking west) and all of a sudden there was that very recognizable cave. "Stop! Stop!", our guide was like, " you know what that is"?" It wasn't at all well publicized/signage (this was 20 years ago) , but once you turned off the highway and checked it out, it had a lot more than you could see from the highway. Well worth the visit.
Much of That “other stuff” is not “other stuff”. It’s parts of scripture that have been fully acknowledged all along by the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox Churches. Protestants call these things “apocrypha”. Luther removed this stuff because no original Hebrew texts of them were still in known existence. This other stuff was only known to exist in Ancient Greek texts, but the Dead Sea Scrolls changed all that because much of these extra books and additions to Daniel and Esther were there and they were in Hebrew.
In Germany, they didn't put the toy inside of the cereal, but outside of the plastic bag inside the cardboard box. Was / Is that the case as well in the USA? Because I've only ever seen it on TV Shows, that the toy falls right out of the cereal bag into the bowl.
Yeah... originally they were IN the cereal, but after about 10 to 12 years (or more) the companies wised up and started putting then in between the bag and box and not IN the cereal
I'm an American and I never encountered a toy being directly in the cereal. It was always outside of the bag. So I never had a toy fall out into my bowl, like he explains, or like how cereal commercials would show. Kinda disappointed me as a kid. But not as much as it would disappoint me to get cereal and realize that you only got the toy from a mail order. Lol
Funny how arbitrarily the people of different branches of religion decided the Bible includes the “books” they want to include and edit out the books they want to leave out. All the books were written by someone either “channeling”’ god or giving their opinion, so what makes them better than anything someone “channels” now or writes today? If the books were actually scribed by Jesus then it would be different.
I would love to see you sit down with Bishop Robert Baron of the Roman Catholic Church and discuss the 7 books that were removed at the time of the Reformation.
There is a lot of stuf in that apple jacks cereal box! Lawsuits might be incoming, considering the literal 'explosive' nature of a certain item! All kidding aside, LOVE this video. It enlightens us in a fun and engaging way Keep up the amazing work, Matt!
The book of Ester could have been what the boy's mom used as paper to start cooking fires with. It is sad, but she actually did apparently use some of the scrolls to do that, so some scrolls will be missing.
Great video Matt, from pulling out Spongebob, to pulling out Eusebius, and Star Wars book, can't forget the bar of soap neither and then tying those all together with the Dead Sea Scrolls. P.S. Dead Sea Scrolls is a dope name as well lol.
Really enjoying this series Matt, thanks for explaining everything in such a fun and interesting way! Now then.... where do I find a box of Apple Jacks with all that neat stuff? (minus the hand grenade of course) Much love - Stewart and Julie
I was looking for a quick and concise overview of what these scrolls might be about and man, you totally delivered! And made it fun and entertaining, too! Awesome job! What's your take on Paul McGrane's trilogy that basically debunks the larger part of the Bible - or more precisely: the interpretation thereof - as myth and make-believe, epitomized in his claim that Jesus never existed as a historically authentic person. I mean, he has been a scholar in this field for many years and arrives at the conclusion that Yeshua or Jesus was more like "artistic freedom" employed by the disciples and the authors of the four books that made it into the canon of Christian scripture? Does he go overboard with this, what do you think? Thanks, this was great!
We have a family meeting each week where we thrash out how to function well as a family. We keep minutes and write down particular consequences, rules and ideas on how to run well. The nudity guidelines felt very familiar... Excellent work Matt, I loved it 😁
Matt, that military excerpt you read is I think their military doctrine. It sounds like how they would conduct battle hypothetically, at least to me, thought that was interesting, thanks for this series it's fascinating.
First, I love the way you present stuff! I've been an avid Bible student for years and appreciate the way you teach. Having said that, I've heard some Jewish historians postulate that Yeshua was an Essene, and probably John the Baptist as well, what's your take on that? Do you think he was part of their sect? Maybe was the one they described? Or maybe took teaching from them, or I'd say in reverse, maybe they had some things right that the Sadducees and Pharisees did not or had no comment on?
Hi Matt - I believe the Book of Enoch [Book of Giants] is considered canon by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. It would be interesting to see one of your videos on a visit to this church. Closer to home, could you do a video discussing whether John 7-8 and Mark 16 should be in or out of Scripture?
The settlement at Qumran - Essenes or the exiled Aaronic priesthood? Any connection to John the Baptist who lived in the wilderness of Judea right there in that area? Look into that, maybe, please?
That calendar stuff reminds me on of the quest to find the tallest naturally grown cactus in Minecraft. A lot of thinking and a lot of work to find out the best solution for a problem most people don't care about.
I bet that the rule about not gesticulating with your left hand was because that was the designated "wiping hand." I'm shooting from the hip, but I know that other ancient people had those kind of customs.
Interesting video! As a Catholic, it bugs me when the Deuterocanon isn't accepted, but you addressed that, so fair enough. Calendar debates are also super fascinating, e.g. the early Church debate on the date of Easter.
I learned a lot from the Book of Sirach: 'distant and perplexed are the eyes of the evil man', 'the evil man runs away even when no-one is chasing him'.
I can't help but imagine how all the Apple Jacks after the bar of soap would taste like Dove. Hmmmm....an allegory for some of the commonalities between Christian and Essene cultures?
This cereal box format reminds me of John Green’s CrashCourse series. Was also curious if you had checked out Margaret Barker’s “First Temple” theory - she posits, using the Dead Sea Scrolls as a source, that Jesus was reviving earlier Jewish temple practices that King Josiah had censored and downplayed before the Babylonian captivity.
You got any videos on books of that weren't included in the Bible or bits that were removed by different religious authorities and why they were removed/not included?
The Thrawn trilogy WAS considered canon pre-disney acquisition....other stuff might be more dubious but that book is the core of every Star Wars nerd that liked the EU. And it was seen as "official" until the proequels, I was alive then, I was a kid then. Dont say star wars folks didnt see it as canon, It was canon.
You also have to mention the Essene teachings and why we have the scrolls in the first place, and lends a very big deal into how the Bible are interpented.
The Thrawn Trilogy is higher canon than the Disney Trilogy as far as I'm concerned. And I'm not the only one.

"Stop! Stop!", our guide was like, " you know what that is"?" It wasn't at all well publicized/signage (this was 20 years ago) , but once you turned off the highway and checked it out, it had a lot more than you could see from the highway. Well worth the visit.
Thanks Matt! Very interesting content today!
Oh boy, Another Video. I visited Qumran once. 😍
I absolutely love your videos! You are hilarious and also give good information. Glad I found your channel.
Thank you so much LaToya! Glad you're here!
Idea: come to Amish country, PA! There’s a bunch of branches. Thanks for your videos!
This is an absolutely brilliant presentation, fun for adults and teens alike! Thanks Matt! And thank God for giving you the wits to do this!
Matt I loved your presentation! Thank you for teaching us about the dead sea scrolls.
Your analogy to the toy in cereal is EXACTLY CORRECT. I greatly appreciate your insight.
In Germany, they didn't put the toy inside of the cereal, but outside of the plastic bag inside the cardboard box. Was / Is that the case as well in the USA? Because I've only ever seen it on TV Shows, that the toy falls right out of the cereal bag into the bowl.
Some did it that way. But before that it was in with cereal
Yup. Many kids would just stick their dirty arm in the cereal to dig for it. No patience lol
Yeah... originally they were IN the cereal, but after about 10 to 12 years (or more) the companies wised up and started putting then in between the bag and box and not IN the cereal
Are you talking about cereal or the Apocrypha?
I'm an American and I never encountered a toy being directly in the cereal. It was always outside of the bag. So I never had a toy fall out into my bowl, like he explains, or like how cereal commercials would show.
Kinda disappointed me as a kid. But not as much as it would disappoint me to get cereal and realize that you only got the toy from a mail order. Lol
Good stuff! Might be worth adding that the Book of Enoch is Cannon in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church -
Funny how arbitrarily the people of different branches of religion decided the Bible includes the “books” they want to include and edit out the books they want to leave out. All the books were written by someone either “channeling”’ god or giving their opinion, so what makes them better than anything someone “channels” now or writes today? If the books were actually scribed by Jesus then it would be different.
Your videos are awesome! Very good explainations, bytheway!
Love this comparison!!! U are a genius Matt! 🤯
Interesting, educational, and fun, Matt. You are very good at creating these videos.
I would love to see you sit down with Bishop Robert Baron of the Roman Catholic Church and discuss the 7 books that were removed at the time of the Reformation.
Or Dr. John Bergsma - I think he's an expert on the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Timothy Flanders would be well-informed. He was a Protestant, then Orthodox, now Catholic. He has a podcast: 'The Meaning of Catholic'.
There is a lot of stuf in that apple jacks cereal box!
Lawsuits might be incoming, considering the literal 'explosive' nature of a certain item!
All kidding aside, LOVE this video. It enlightens us in a fun and engaging way
Keep up the amazing work, Matt!
I'm enjoying all this. Makes me think of what our "time capsules" will lead to when opened?!
The book of Ester could have been what the boy's mom used as paper to start cooking fires with. It is sad, but she actually did apparently use some of the scrolls to do that, so some scrolls will be missing.
This was so helpful and very entertaining! I just discovered your channel and can't wait to watch more of your videos!
Instant like simply for this hilarious analogy with the cereal. I love your videos every time Matt.
Great video Matt, from pulling out Spongebob, to pulling out Eusebius, and Star Wars book, can't forget the bar of soap neither and then tying those all together with the Dead Sea Scrolls.
P.S. Dead Sea Scrolls is a dope name as well lol.
Dude. Thank you so much for all that you do!
Absolutely love your videos brother. Keep it up!!
Really enjoying this series Matt, thanks for explaining everything in such a fun and interesting way! Now then.... where do I find a box of Apple Jacks with all that neat stuff? (minus the hand grenade of course) Much love - Stewart and Julie
That outro had no business being that funky
Ay I appreciate your content 👌🏼and I’m from Wyoming so I extra appreciate it
Love the analogies.
Thanks for this. It’s really interesting.
Very good video, interesting and informative. What is the name of the book you were reading out of? And who is the author? Thank you
It's "The Complete Dead Sea Scrolls in English" published by Penguin Classics
Hey sweet. My men's bible study just finished our study using Bock's commentary on Acts.
We have a family meeting each week where we thrash out how to function well as a family. We keep minutes and write down particular consequences, rules and ideas on how to run well. The nudity guidelines felt very familiar... Excellent work Matt, I loved it 😁
It was a good entertaining session to introduce an old manuscript like dead sea scrolls.
Oh my goodness that was so fun and informative...
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and knowledge!
How long did that take to prep? Impressive!
Very nice Bro! I like your 10 Minute Bible Power Hour!
Really good vid. About time I found someone who gets into the meat and potatoes of the scrolls.
👍
The settlement at Qumran - Essenes or the exiled Aaronic priesthood? Any connection to John the Baptist who lived in the wilderness of Judea right there in that area? Look into that, maybe, please?
This was a fantastic video, man
This is so creative and informative 😂👌
That calendar stuff reminds me on of the quest to find the tallest naturally grown cactus in Minecraft. A lot of thinking and a lot of work to find out the best solution for a problem most people don't care about.
I bet that the rule about not gesticulating with your left hand was because that was the designated "wiping hand." I'm shooting from the hip, but I know that other ancient people had those kind of customs.
Thanks for making it fun.
Hey, Matt!! Great video, what’s the name of the book your reading??
The Complete Dead Sea Scrolls in English by Geza Vermes
I suddenly feel the urge to wear a brown fedora... and possibly move to Qumran
Hi Matt. We don't seem to currently be able to get apple jacks in the U.K. how much would shipping costs be for a box? ✝️💕🏃🌎💨
Kittim was Cyprus and Belial (the wicked) is the king of Tyre Phoenicia who had a settlement on the island of kittim
I can't wait until you do a video visiting a Coptic Church
You got any videos on books of that weren't included in the Bible or bits that were removed by different religious authorities and why they were removed/not included?
The Thrawn trilogy WAS considered canon pre-disney acquisition....other stuff might be more dubious but that book is the core of every Star Wars nerd that liked the EU. And it was seen as "official" until the proequels, I was alive then, I was a kid then. Dont say star wars folks didnt see it as canon, It was canon.
Whoa!!! Funk beats and the Dead Sea scrolls? That is definitely takin’ it to the bridge on the one. “Pow!!! Here is your surprise.” 😀
This is really entertaining and informative hahaha
a Star Wars reference to help explain biblical canon? BRILLIANT.
You also have to mention the Essene teachings and why we have the scrolls in the first place, and lends a very big deal into how the Bible are interpented.
Nice use of the apple Jack's! Cereal toys for the win 😆
Nice intro!
