Wow, you are really digging into the church fathers! Dude, I'm Catholic and you are telling me stuff I've never even heard of and I really love studying the history of the church. You are bringing it.
It's also important to remember that the gospels were written in an oral culture. They were able to remember stuff a lot better than what our written culture can. They were more focused on getting the message across as opposed to the exact words spoken.
While I don't quite agree with everything you say I do appreciate your intellectual freedom which I don't find very much of in Protestant circles. You're really a breath of fresh air. I am very thankful for that especially as a Catholic.

We all use the same texts, but we have gone in our separate paths based on a number of key differences in how we interpret certain passages, and what meaning we give to certain words.
Based on those assumptions, both make sense as to where they have gone.
That said, I do think Catholics have the wrong read on it, but if I thought it was the correct way, I'd be Catholic, and then think that what I now believe is wrong.
The main thing is to be respectful in how we approach each-other, which is one of the things I love about TMBH

@@35751W im guessing you are a protestant of some kind... by stating that the papacy isn't biblical. In the past I would have tried to explain, but for one reason that never works. It takes so much to understand things and that meaning letting go of all judgments.. so unless you do that, you will never understand any of these teachings which are99.9% biblical. Why? because you haven't studied catholic theology. A lot of people who were raised catholic and leave the faith, mostly leave because of ignorance... because the more on studies and researches the catholic faith,... no one would leave. It is impossible! why would one trade all for nothing? on the other hand, the more informed you are on these matters of the faith, the christian religion, early church fathers and teachings, theology... things will start to unfold.. and willl bring you back to the faith. I've noticed that the most anti-Catholic super intellectual protestants end up Catholic themselves (like Scott Hahn among others),, while the catholics who know nothing of their faith, and do nothing to understand their faith or how it works, leave with the first protestant who tells them how unbiblical their faith is (which is false).So unless one day you come to try to understand.. you will otherwise you will never do.

As always love your approach to our relationship with The Lord vs man made agenda driven religiousness. You know if everyone regardless of the topic, would approach life using this same approach we would see alot of the daily turmoil exposed for what it really is and maybe just maybe we could fix dare I say prevent much of upheaval we see every waking minute. He just said he appreciates their attitude, that he used to be one of them, he loves them, and hopes that they will do what he did, which led to him change his mind about some stuff. It's the attitude we should all have towards people we disagree with! Grace and truth well combined.
@@francesbadger3401 The difference is that he is giving that comment from the perspective of one who thinks that because Mormonism is incorrect, which automatically means that he believes Mormons would be better off leaving as he did. but if you look at it from a Mormon perspective it is most definitely an insult to their intelligence and faith in Christ. thinking that because someone believe differently they must not be smart enough to think clearly, is in fact a backhanded way of insulting them. in my understanding Mormonism teaches some doctrines closer and with more clarity than Mainstream Christians do. and Mainstream Christians understand Mormonism from a mainstream Christian perspective, which is what makes it difficult to see it's validity, beauty and harmony on many levels. Mainstream Christians misinterpret and often misrepresent Mormon doctrine, not because they mean to, but because they fail to see it in an unbiased or un-presuppositionalst context. basically Mainstream Christians refuse to conceive that they could be wrong on any doctrines or detail, let alone on multiple simultaneously. and in order for mainstream Christians to accept or even understand Mormon doctrine, they would have to conceive of a world in which they could be wrong on multiple levels. and most simply are not willing to do that. Ultimately Mormonism is not in any way contrary to the Bible, though it is very contrary to the Mainstream Christian's interpretations of the Bible. letting go of those very biased and in some cases very conjectural presuppositions is the only way to understand how Mormonism could be both Biblically accurate and doctrinally sound. Not that I would toot my own horn over it, but I've been on both sides, which has helped me understand the stumbling blocks of both arguments.

It's almost like you didn't watch the video, listen to what was being said, or didn't learn anything at all. If you are wanting people to take you seriously then at least listen to evidences and then refute with your own sources. Don't just watch something and then throw it out as hogwash just because.

@@jasonnoble7814 I am leaning a lot towards didn't watch the video at all, or at least didn't listen. Nothing of what you have said was the point of the video. This isn't an exploration of the extrabiblical documents mentioning Jesus, but instead extrabiblical examination of a few of the mentions of Jesus' teachings. He even shows some on screen, so if you wanted to be lazy and not look for them they are there, while also citing them well enough that you can find them if you wish. This isn't a faith thing. What you seem to want to be doing is changing the subject and fight about something. You are the one making claims and not supporting it. I don't care how long you have been studying religions, if this is how you treat looking at historical data then I feel bad for how skewed your studies have been.

Tradition can’t save you. The Bible is clear on that. I do not understand why you take the authority of the pope and place it over the authority of Jesus. It really confuses me. Idk if it is pride or what else it could be that convinces you the pope has more authority than God Himself.
@@shnobo9471 the Bible is clear on the Tradition in 2nd Thessalonians 2:15. There is Tradition and tradition. I'm not placing the authority of the Pope above the authority of Jesus lol. Jesus gave the authority to the Pope and the Church not the reverse.
There are other places where oral Tradition is mentioned. In the end of John's Gospel, he says that there were other events, but were not recorded. I do have pride in some aspects of my life, but like that regarding my faith.
I don't know how to even describe repetitive claims like these you just wrote. It really confuses me how some Protestants (or any other religious group like Muslims) often use srawman.
I became a Catholic (again) after many years of searching. This year was the first time after four years I went to confession. I identified myself as a non denominational Christian, but I mostly subscribed to Protestant theology.

Matt, this is definitely one of my favorite videos you have made thus far!! I've been spending a lot of time recently ruminating over a variety of different Christian world-views and perspectives, especially Mormon and Catholic backgrounds and theologies - and as a Protestant, it's interesting trying to understand these different branches and such with an unbiased lens, but also not be carried about by every wind of doctrine, testing the spirits as I go along. Furthermore, I've been thinking even if like Catholicism for example is true, what implications would that have upon my life and upon my relationship with the Lord. I value that a lot and I want to bring glory to His name, so I am stuck wondering how the ramifications of believing one such branch of Christianity affects my faith as a whole, Protestant or what not. Ultimately, I really appreciated your video Matt because not only did you address this in a clearly articulated manner, but you also voiced your thoughts on the implications of believing such would entail, something that I've been meditating much upon.

Rob Brothers Hi Rob, I can tell you, that being Catholic, my relationship with Jesus has grown.
You referred to the Catholic Church as a "branch," however I would say that the Catholic Church is the trunk and the Protestant Churches branched off (historically speaking). Spiritually speaking, Christ is the true vine and we are the branches (John 15:1-5).

It got my attention your message since I’m catholic and my wife was Mormon, she is currently a catechumen and will be Catholic on Easter. When you get to understand Catholic doctrine well, you’ll see that it is all centered in Christ. Saints, Mary, confessions, Eucharist, etc, they all point to Jesus our Savior and redeemer. I’ll pray for you and I highly would recommend Scot Hahn books. Forgive me if I sounded too preachy, I just get excited.

Thanks Matt for another great video!!! This only shows us the great work the early church did to compile the Bible. As a Catholic I personally feel gratitude for the Church Fathers. Their zeal and discernment aided by the Holy Spirit did help shape the Church of Christ.

I'm Orthodox Christian, and I'll keep the 76 books of our Bible, since that was the original canonized Bible. The number of 66 books shows it is incomplete, ripped out for no good reason, other than one person's opinion. I enjoy reading the Deuterocanicals because especially Maccabees I, II, II show the history of Israel "between the testaments." The others are enlightening as well to read.
Charlene Lee I'm also Orthodox Christian - we often say that we have ' the fullness of the Faith '. Your comment bears witness to that fact. I never excoriate non- Orthodox believers. They are free to believe and worship as they wish, but if they want to 'taste the Lord and see how good He is' they'll seek out the original Church, weigh the evidence and act accordingly.
Deutorocanonical books are cool and all but they seem like that one episode of Stranger Things where she goes and meets all those people who have powers like hers.
The episode had no effect on the narrative of the season and felt like a filler episode. Sure, it still widens the story, but it feels like it interrupts the narrative and was unnecessary in the end.
Maccabbes are so exciting! They should be made into movies.
I'm Protestant, but recently purchased a Catholic Bible to experience some of what we would consider "Apocrypha", and while I'm not convinced about all of them, I absolutely believe that we're missing out by not having the Maccabees.
Consider this:
Jesus and the Apostles quoted from the Deuterocanicals 68 times. Here are 10 of them:
1) Matthew 6:19-20 is from Sirach 29:11
2) Matthew 16:18 is from Wisdom 16:13
3) Matthew 24:15 is from I Maccabees 1:54 & II Maccabees 8:17
4) Mark 4:5 & 16-17 is from or follows Sirach 40:15
5) Mark 9:48 references Judith 16:1
6) Luke 21:24 follows Sirach 28:18
7) Acts 17:29 follows Wisdom 13:1
8) James 1:19 follows Sirach 5:11
9) Romans 9:21 follows Wisdom 15:7
10) James 5:3 follows Sirach 29:10
Note: The Deuterocanicals were part of the Bible for 1500 years before Luther.

The Orthodox and Catholic Church didn’t supervise it, the Holy Spirit supervised it THROUGH His One Church... this was 1000 years before the Church ever became divided... so yes the Orthodox Catholic Church was alive and well in the first century and it’s Sacred Tradition protected what would eventually become scripture

In the great courses plus audio "book" "the new testament" the lecturer makes a very good case that there are atleast 2 pre gospel sources and atleast one if not multiple verbal sources.

Very welll done! I am a progressive Christian pastor with many more conservative friends. I think this is the best explanation/examination of the "secret gospels” I’ve ever seen. You offer a way for Christians with a more fundamentalist (word used specifically about truth of Bible) to believe and study the bible with faith, WITHOUT having to turn off their brains and ignore modern scholarship.

Not just that, but Luke in his intro openly says he consulted prior sources and conducted interviews to compile and wrote his own Gospel.
Another good video Matt. I am amused that the ten-minute bible hour episode is 20 minutes. LOL. If you imagine recording three years of everything anybody said (especially a popular teacher) you'd have a lot to sort through. However, what the canon can offer us, the Bible that is, is a sure and complete collection of what we need for our salvation. There are many hard teachings in the Bible, but I'm sure there are more confusing and harder teachings outside of it. I believe that the leaders of the Church were inspired by God to give us those works that will best serve our salvation.
Please tell us more about what the Church Father's said about the Eucharist and the Real Presence of Jesus. And about the Bishops and Hierarchy?

It is now believed by some historians, that the original Gospels were indited within only a couple years of the Crucifixion. To my way of thinking that only makes perfect sense, as it stands to reason, that the early Church fathers would be anxious to record their memories of the teachings of Jesus as soon as possible, and while still fresh, in order to retain, as much as possible, the genuine conformity and fullness of Jesus' words. You really seem to try to practice empathy, to think critically as a Mormon or agnostic or atheist or Protestant or Catholic or lifelong believer would. Not to get on another rabbit trail, but dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451's premise is people accepted and preferred the cliff-notes, readers digest version of an abridged work. One correction to your intro: there is only ONE gospel in the form of four books, not four gospels....

Four gospels is just easier to say than "the four accounts of the gospel of Jesus the Christ" :P
Calling an account of the gospel one of the "gospels" is not a wrong way to refer to them.
"The gospel" is the good news of Jesus Christ and his work for mankind, etc.
"The gospels" is a group a biblical books about the life and ministry of Jesus.
It's not a misnomer, it's what we call them.
And there’s also Paul’s gospel.

As a Catholic, I was taught that the Holy Spirit (acting through people) is this author of the Bible.
That’s what the Protestants believe too
The Holy Spirit is the author of the Bible in the way that He inspired the mortal authors as they wrote. That's what makes scripture inerrant theologically, although there might be historic and other mistakes in the Bible.
Catholics are realistic in their approach while dealing with scripture. No fairy tales entertained :)

The Catholic church determined the Canon of Scripture in 382 a.d under Pope Damasus I. Put simply, the Church determined what books were Sacred Scripture and which were not . As it is written ,
1 Timothy 3:15

I’m a gnostic, which you incorrectly defined in a different video about the many books left out of the Bible. That’s ok. I deeply appreciate you videos because you are a humble truth seeker, and a follower of Jesus, just like myself. That’s why this channel is so good, you don’t arrogantly claim righteous exclusivity. I really appreciate that. This world is far to big and complex to do so. I know the only thing that truly matters is Jesus. Not even the Bible can claim equal importance to him.

Important note on the memory issue raised at 10:25
The people of those days lived in a culture with much greater oral tradition, and less literacy. People in such cultures tend to have far greater memories than people in more literary cultures. This point of course does not disprove that there may have been early documents of Jesus's sayings, but it is important to know that an oral tradition could have served the same purpose as documents.

Of course with your scholarship you know that St. Paul and John of Patmos taught Polycarp (who fought against Gnosticism and Docetists (who believed Jesus was divine but only appeared to be human). Polycarp taught Ignatius of Antioch (?-107), who first organized local presbyters to maintain the truth of Jesus, and Ignatius taught Irenaeus, who codified the New Testament, as well as fought various forms of false definitions of Who Christ was. And then along came Tertullian...
But you know all this;, so keep us the good work informing us what you learn and how you measure veracity.

This video made me realize better the difficult tightrope you walk: on the one hand, convincing nonbelievers of the credibility of the Bible as such; on the other hand, convincing fellow evangelicals of the legitimacy and intellectual use of historical-critical methods of reading the Bible. That can't be easy, especially in ordinary language.

Matt, could you explain what you mean by “internal evidence”? I don’t mean that I would like you to explain why you are unconvinced by the internal evidence of the Book of Mormon. I suspect this is an academic/scholarly technique that you use that I would like to know more about.

If you’ve been watching this channel long enough, you know that the whole “the Bible isn’t that accurate” excuse just doesn’t play out. If you believe the Bible is from God, then it doesn’t make sense that He would say that, then wait a few hundred years, then give another book out of the blue to some guy in Illinois like “lol jk here’s this.” Believe what you want to, you’re the boss of you, but it doesn’t make sense.
@@noahwilhelm9201 Yeah, I'm not a mormon. I've read the BOM and am unswayed (I didn't expect to be convinced, I was doing it as an academic exercise). I want to know more about what Matt mentioned about "internal evidence". Having read the BOM, I suspect I know what he means, but am not sure. He knows many scholarly techniques of evaluating evidence, that I'm not aware of and wanted to hear more about it. I suspect his explanation would put words to the feeling I have about it but have been unable to articulate.

Those who complied the Canon of the New Testament I’m sure checked out the quotes and the writings from which they came. However the words of the Church Fathers, especially the early ones, might have had some accuracy or reasonably accurate ones. Some may be slightly off given time passed but they may be of instructional use if we don’t put them on the same level of Scripture. Certainly the line in acts is accurate as it’s in Scripture. We do have to remember that for over 300 years there was not a defined canon of the New Testament. The Gospel was handed on, with some writing and some word of mouth. For hundreds of years. As far as the dates of Scripture I’d recommend Scripture Scholar Scott Hahn if you have not read or heard him. I’m currently listening to his study on Matthew. A Good video and quite interesting.

The Bible warns that many will come in the name of Jesus preaching all kinds of things that are not true. That’s why Jesus founded His Church to teach in His name throughout the ages with authority. Beware of the self-appointed freelance Bible interpreters who teach against the Church..

Nuance refers to slight and subtle differences in shades of meaning. It is sometimes difficult to understand, but there are two elements that contribute to nuance: connotation, or the ideas and feelings associated with a specific word and subtext, or what's going on beneath the surface of the writing. = Catholicism. Tradition. The deleted books.....

I wondered if you had any views on the gospel of Thomas regarding the following:
1. The author having access to Q during composition hence some of the additional sayings of Jesus found in it.
2. It predating the Gospel of John, with John being written partly in response to the Gospel of Thomas. For example the story of doubting Thomas being included in John as a direct theological attack on the position of the Gospel of Thomas.
3. That the Gospel of Thomas has been incorrectly labelled as Gnostic due to it being found with other Gnostic texts, as some have pointed to how distinct it is in its theology compared to these other texts.
What I really believe is that is, if an "Agrapha" Helps you to follow Jesus more closely as per his teaching, one can treasure those words.. If it helps a person to run a good race ( As st. Paul says in his letter) one should treasure those words as a reminder to become a good Christian....

Saying that it was an organic process within the community, or that the Catholic or Orthodox Church supervised is basically the same thing. The Christians as a whole were the Church("Church" doesn't mean religious authorities, it basically means "gathering", and that includes all Christians), with no distinction between Catholic, or Orthodox and there was not protestantism.
Even when Revelations talks about 7 churches, and some could argue that there were disciples of Paul, disciples of Peter or disciples of James, they were not in schism. The ones that were not part of the Church were movements like Donatism, Arianism or Gnosticism.
