I would always binge watch every show I'd see but after watching that first episode...I had to stop there to process everything that happened. Crazy episodeee!!
This was my favorite episode of the season. I love how commited to the games the recruiter was, even going out of his way to play russian roulette TWICE. I will say though Mr Kim was the GOAT, gone to soon if ya ask me.
gong-yoo actually has the ability to control both sides of his face independently from each other. he is sort of smiling like the psycho he is on the left side w the red lighting, but in the absence of lighting you can sort of see his fear of his death. truly incredible scene and gong-yoo is the highlight of this season to me.
I hate that so many people say season 1 was better and almost disrespecting season 2. They both have their purposes. Season 1 is the foundation for the entire show. Season 2 is setting us up for season 3. People aren’t looking at the structure and how each episode plays off of each other to increase the stakes, tension and climax once season 3 rolls around
I agree with this. It's for this reason why I say we have to watch season 3 to be able to properly judge season 2. I I think a large reason people think season 1 was better is because they're frustrated with us only getting these seven episodes and it doesn't feel like anything has significantly moved by the time we get to the end of the season and we waited 3 years to get these seven episodes only to be left. Feeling potentially unfulfilled until we see the rest in season 3
Absolutely agree. I think the director wanted to replicate the original Star Wars 4,5 & 6 (...wait, player 456, and the Squid Game series replicating Star Wars episode 4,5 & 6? lol had to type this out) or the Avengers infinity War to Endgame. S1 is foundation, S2 is the Empire Strikes Back/Infinity War when everything is sad and dire, and S3 will be Return of the Jedi/Endgame where the loose ends are tied up.
The thing I love most about the final confrontation between the recruiter and Gi Hun is the amount of stubbornness and conviction of the two viewpoints. The Recruiter represents everyone that runs the games that view the players as trash needed to be removed by society. Whereas Gi Hun stands firm in his position that they’re not numbers, but in fact human beings and that what they’re doing is horrific. And through each bullet, that belief is tested time and time again and while both men get an opportunity to end the game and being allowed to by shooting their opponent only by admitting the other’s point of view…and BOTH absolutely refuse to do it. It just shows the never ending debate about the games and how neither side is never going to see eye to eye… And more than that, that the stubbornness behind both points of view is likely going to end with nothing but bloodshed and a game. And it’s so fucking brilliant.
the episode was so engaging. in the last section, even though you could easily guess who would win the roulette, the tension was so intense that it didnt matter
3:37 Something I noticed in the scene where the recruiter realizes he lost: the red side of his face shows his cocky arrogant side, while the unlit side of his face shows the shock and the realization that he was going to die. If you look at only one side and cover the other, they have very different expressions
@@Towcj They already have actors that are too expensive like Front man actor and other so call small minor actors are well known stars in South Korea like cryptocurrency guy and his ex girlfriend actresses.
I loved this episode so much and i wished the recruiter was in more or the show. Im glad he got basically his own whole episode, though. One question it left me with was this: How long has he been engaging in this risky behavior? He seemed to have little to no regard for his life, choosing to play russian roulette in a way that was very likely to end his life. Has he always been playing games with his life and gotten lucky up until this point? Or has he been more careful until now and if so, what changed within him to allow this? He has clearly worked for the games for a very long time. Surely, he hasnt been playing games with his life for all these years. My theory is that either 1. He's bored and he doesnt get the thrill out of slapping people and sending them to their deaths that he used to or 2. He doesnt really want to live anymore. Not that he's suicidal necessarily, but maybe he's done everything he wants to do and life isnt interesting anymore
I think the second season of Squid Game is criminally underrated. I genuinely prefer it to the first season. I loved the new characters and found them incredibly entertaining and memorable (especially Thanos). I loved the new games, the sound track and the new focus on voting and the social commentary about how a razor-thin majority can impose their will on the minority.

My fav episode! Usually the first episode tells you how the rest of the story will go. Gi-hun beat the recruiter at his own game with sheer luck and determination. So this is probably foreshadowing how Gi-hun beats the frontman.
luck and determination is what got gi-hun in his gambling debt. If the writers stick to the central idea of the show gi-hun will prevail through determination alone despite how unlucky he is. shit, his 3rd in command was a double agent and the rear guard crumbled along with the ammo resupply

@@barrymccockiner773 I enjoyed the first season’s cast more because the show actually made us care about them. They showed some good character development with episode 2, showed us who these characters are, what their life is like outside of the games and why they are playing the games in the first place, giving some backstory. Season 2 failed to do that, didn’t really go into too much depth on who these people are. Failed to make me care enough. I barely knew who some of the characters were before they died.
I literally didn't care about any characters from season 2. Season 1 had Sang Woo, and Ali who were extremely well written and even the big moment with Il Nam "dying" in the game, there was no moment like that in this season. This episode is good for season 2, but season 1 overall is better.
For me, S02 E01 was my best episode from the whole season. Great acting from the sales man. The expression he made when it was his turn for the first time was acting perfection. Plus he actually pulled the freaking trigger at the end. Crazy character, talented actor. Too bad he hasn't featured in any Hollywood movies yet like the guy who plays 'the frontman'. And that song playing in background when him & the protagonist were going at it each other made the scene tense & epic. An episode well written & directed.
I know you mentioned Hollywood but if you like the salesman actor check out Train to Busan, if you haven't seen it, where he plays a father trying to keep his daughter safe during the apocalypse in Korea. Plays a totally different "everyman" kind of character, opposed to the regimented, borderline psychopathic character of the salesman. His commitment to participating games is poetic and morbid. Even when he realized he lost the game, he decided to roll with it. That’s what made me feel butterflies in my stomach.
This episode was indeed perfect. An innocuous scene at the start, when we have a couple looking for a room, ends up setting some tension at the end when Gi-hun arrives at the hotel and sees the pink light. The kind of small detail that was perfectly executed. In my ranking, I still place episode 6 from Season 1 at the top, but this episode certainly comes very close.
It is a wonderful episode indeed. I have struggle choosing between episode 6 from season 1 and this one as my favorite personally, but recency bias compels me to put this one at the top. Either way, I loved season 2. Yes, season one is better in some ways (emotional depth for example - this episode is an exception), but the way they continued the story was satisfying. Also I knew going in that this would be a half of a story, so I wasn't disappointed by the ending at all.
As a korean, the actor of the captain is also very famous in Korea, so I thought it would be too boring for him to be a simple nice guy who helps the good cop unconditionally for free, I expected something more than that from him
Maybe I’m not understanding it but my only issue of the episode is not knowing what propelled the recruiter to villainy. He pretty much killed his own father then said “I knew I was fit for the role”. Where was his motivation for it all???
I think you had to read between the lines. The recruiter's intense hatred of gamblers and his father having played in the games likely indicates that his father was a terrible gambler that ruined the family finances and therefore the recruiter's childhood. He likely grew up in poverty and becoming bitterly twisted, leading to the formation of Nazi ideology.
I love the paradox of game, wheather we're strangled to the game(like recruiter) or we're uttering the unhinged valley to sway away from the game(like gi-hun) each choices would lead them towards the deranged enlivement , an death within their choices.
Season 1 and season 2 first episodes are amazing. Season 1 showed the complexity to Gi hun character, being a person addicted to gambling but still kind hearted, especially towards his daughter. They aren't supposed to mix, but it still works. Season 2 goes into the mystery of the recruiter and his facial expressions is insane levels of acting. If I had to guess, the director and writers intentionally make their first episode the best, in order to capture the viewers attention. And I do like this approach.
Whenever a sequel comes out, the first thing people always do is compare it to its predecessor. Most people didn’t rewatch s1 before watching s2, (I didn’t either), so they forget the flaws that the previous season had and remember it for the good stuff, but have an easier time remembering the flaws in the newer season since it’s more recent. It happens for pretty much every sequel, you just have to wait for the hype to die down and people will give more accurate thoughts on them.
Episode 1 was absolutely perfect. After the end of that episode I was soo confused why people were saying the season was bad, they started with a bang! imo
I think season 2 is just as excellent as the first season, just in different ways. The thing that most people get hung up on in their own mind is they hype it up too much. They want to re-experience the same feelings they got from season 1 and if they don't in season 2, to them it's an instant downgrade instead of them actually taking the piece for what it is Episode 1 was fantastic, probably one of the best episodes, but I also really liked the episode where they play Mingle, and the final episode was also exceptional. (Though all episodes are just really good, it's hard to rank them all)
Definitely an amazing episode. I did not expect them to knock it out of the park picking up where they left off. It did decline a bit as the season went on. I think they just tried doing too much. Too many side stories and key characters they wanted us to care about. Some could have been removed entirely and the show wouldn't have really lost anything IMO. Better off keeping it simple and deep like season 1. Still great and can't wait for season 3.
There’s no way you liked that rushed cliffhanger slop over this. The acting in this scene was phenomenal and was really interesting. That’s something I can’t say about the ending of Season 2
I prefer season 1 but season 2 is still brilliant. The reason for this is that when the games started again, there was some repetition from the first season. However, the episode that is being discussed here, was made up of new content.
This season and espcially this episode is over hated. People are blinded by nostalgia and they need to let it go to understand the masterpiece season 2 is
If you took them out, the story wouldn’t make any sense as there would be no way to see how desperate Gi-Hun was in his search and the recruiters side of the story.
The worst part about the episode and really the entire show was a cliffhanger, and when that’s the case, it’s really not that bad as it really just means you wanted more.
A fitting finish for the very last scene of the series would be Gi-Hun at the subway station playing a game with someone indicating he’s the new recruiter
@ They make it clear the games won’t stop until society changes so Gi-Hun may end the games but realise he’s been a gambler all along whilst the police officer becomes the hero.
Do you think Season 2 Episode 1 is the strongest episode in Season 2 of Squid Game? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

It happens for pretty much every sequel, you just have to wait for the hype to die down and people will give more accurate thoughts on them.
i think he is so much like the toymaker from doctor who both really into games and obey the rules
During the first episode when the sales man died the half red was on both of them there was red blood on the other side of the sales men face
even if its not as strong as season 1. it went beyond expectations
severance season 2 ep 1 gonna blow this outta the water trust
Hopefully it'll be a good season of the show!
I think the salesman actor nailed it.
Yeah his performance was strong!
Episode 1 was absolutely perfect. After the end of that episode I was soo confused why people were saying the season was bad, they started with a bang! imo
I think season 2 is just as excellent as the first season, just in different ways. The thing that most people get hung up on in their own mind is they hype it up too much. They want to re-experience the same feelings they got from season 1 and if they don't in season 2, to them it's an instant downgrade instead of them actually taking the piece for what it is
Episode 1 was fantastic, probably one of the best episodes, but I also really liked the episode where they play Mingle, and the final episode was also exceptional. (Though all episodes are just really good, it's hard to rank them all)
Felt like a movie.
It was such a strong episode!
I personally liked the ending more than the beginning but still an insane episode
There’s no way you liked that rushed cliffhanger slop over this. The acting in this scene was phenomenal and was really interesting. That’s something I can’t say about the ending of Season 2
@@InsightfulGear dude, if you biggest complaint is that it was a cliffhanger, then that just means you only dislike it because it ended.
@Matt-wb8ni "rushed cliffhanger slop" meaning I didnt like the way it ended, not that "I didnt want it to end"
This is how to open a new season.
It really is! Especially after a several year break!
no doubt ep 1 is the best of the season
It really is!
I don't know why Gi-Hun happily played Russian roulette. Plus we'd already seen a more elaborate version earlier.
The best episode is the one with the spinning floor so far .
The best game ever though is by far the glass bridge . That one was intense
The recruiter carried this episode.
Yeah his ending was incredible!
I prefer season 1 but season 2 is still brilliant. The reason for this is that when the games started again, there was some repetition from the first season. However, the episode that is being discussed here, was made up of new content.
BRO IS GLAZING A MULTIMILLIONAIRE MADE SHOW 💀💀💀
The best episode for me
Same!
1:50 "somebody was gonna be leaving due to their death" c'mon you knew it was not going to be Gi Hun
This season and espcially this episode is over hated. People are blinded by nostalgia and they need to let it go to understand the masterpiece season 2 is
unfortunately, the rest of the season did not live up to the introduction episode
It just seems that good because of how sub par the rest of the show was😂😂
I personally didn't like the segments with the debt collectors. Feel like if those characters are taken out, it didn't matter to the story.
If you took them out, the story wouldn’t make any sense as there would be no way to see how desperate Gi-Hun was in his search and the recruiters side of the story.
7:58 nah 6.9 is WAYY to high for ep7 s2. I'd give it a 5
Bold!
Why do you dislike it so much?
@@pilspolitie171cliffhanger
The worst part about the episode and really the entire show was a cliffhanger, and when that’s the case, it’s really not that bad as it really just means you wanted more.
@Matt-wb8niwhy is that a bad thing? Isn’t that a good thing? That’s exactly what the writer wants you to feel until s3 comes out this June.
Pretty sad that the show goes downhill from here.
I still feel like it was a pretty good one though
salesman carried
A very strong character!
Dude I thought this too
Glad you agree!
@ for real, the first episode gives you all types of unsettling feelings that are so satisfying lol.
I personally did not like episode 1 that much. The salesman killing himself - and we didnt need to know his backstory neither.
“Didn’t need to know his backstory.” You find out his one backstory in one scene and it’s one of the most important moments for the character. 💀
@Matt-wb8ni His backstory was junk.
@@nuggetlover9431 I’m honestly questioning your thinking process right now.
A fitting finish for the very last scene of the series would be Gi-Hun at the subway station playing a game with someone indicating he’s the new recruiter
That would be very dark!
@ They make it clear the games won’t stop until society changes so Gi-Hun may end the games but realise he’s been a gambler all along whilst the police officer becomes the hero.
You have a way of saying absolutely nothing in the longest way possible
Perfect, eh?
This episode was such a good one!
@ it was but I don’t even think it’s the best in the series, that’s all
when someone compares IMDB ratings... L
It's pathetic
U r just gibberishing words without any real clues or meanings.
