Clannad isn't a story you can tell in a movie runtime. One of the things that makes it so good are the characters, who simply cannot be developed in 2 hours
5:54 "Why are Nagisa and Kouko charging their ki here?" I wasn't ready for that, lmao Speaking of not being ready for stuff, the way you talked about "Palm of a Tiny Hand" was something i wasn't expecting in a video where I thought I'd just be laughing at all the way through. Man, that was beautifully put. Also agreed that the movie's version of Dango Daikazoku is really cute, and actually makes more sense as an in-universe franchise for kids that Nagisa loves.
I’m happy to hear you liked it! They used the song as an in universe thing in the anime as well, I don’t remember if they mention it in the visual novel
I think in telling about Nagisa's death in the first 5 minutes they were honest-to-got trying to pull the Grave of the Fireflies trick. You know. that dread of waiting for the inevitable. Which was quite arrogant of them, considering the quality. That's a HARD trick to pull.
Seems like it. The only piece of media that I’ve experienced that pulled it off well was probably halo reach, and that opinion is at least somewhat controversial. It’s a tough trick indeed
Tomoya in the original anime: a depressed young man learning to open his heart and care about his life and enjoy it Tomoya in the movie: something bad happened to me one time and so I will be depressed for the end of time
Yikes, I knew this movie existed, and it didn't seem to great from the little I had heard about it, so I thought, "It can't be *that* bad, right?" After watching this video, I can see that it must have been truly horrendous.
Chad Sunohara was created by sacrificing everything else. I always had the idea that the movie was an alternate universe in which Nagisa gets sent back instead of Tomoya. Where she remembers certain things and takes a more active role.
Agree totally. This movie is an absolute abomination. The animation and direction is weird as fuck. So many upward pans, slo-mo shots and static frames. The only things I liked about the movie: - Tomoya's friends actually still being around and visiting him after Nagisa's death. - Yoshino picking Tomoya up and trying to get him back to work. - Sunohara actually maturing a bit, getting a part-time job.
I really like some of the moments in this movie, like the scene where Tomoya's friends and father try to cheer him up after his loss. Also the soundtrack in this movie is great, as good as Maeda's and Orito's work. And the song Yakusoku is one of my favorite songs written for the Clannad universe.
The only thing that prevented me from giving this movie 1/10 is actually its Chiisana Tenohira, which I liked the Lia version more than the original.... that's a fantastic review right there mate! I remember finishing clannad after story around 4 years ago for the first time and desperately searching for anything related to clannad, eventually coming across this huge pile of shit. This is literally the only anime entry in my MyAnimeList with a score of fucking 1/10, with after story having an obvious 10/10
I’m glad you enjoyed it! Personally I knew about this film’s reputation before going in so I can’t imagine how disappointing it must have been to watch it thinking it’ll be just as good as after story
1 year ago, discovered that Clannad had a movie. 3 minutes in the movie : Nah man, i can't. Everything is wrong in this movie already. (this was my real reaction)
I literally just watched this movie last night. I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said (except for the remake of the dango daikazoku, complete garbage in my opinion). Although, one thing I quickly learned while watching the movie is that if you look at it from a satirical angle it can be quite funny. The way all the characters are completely butchered and don't feel right at all makes it so that it can be quite enjoyable to watch it as some improv theatre performance vs an actual movie. It's kinda like the saturday night live version of clannad. Seeing the move as satire of real clannad made it quite enjoyable and I actually laughed at how dumb some of these parts were. Maybe try giving this movie another go from a different angle and you might not ruin your life over this movie anymore. Anyways good video, you deserve more views for the quality of this content. Although I recommend you be careful uploading footage from Toei animation as their are known to attack youtubers using any of their material even under fair use laws (that doesn't exist in japan). I'm too lazy to re read this message for grammatical or structural mistakes so I apologize if it's completely unreadable.
That’s an interesting angle, I wonder if I might have some fun with it if I watched it again with this view. I don’t know if I’ll be able to trick my brain into thinking it’s satire though. And don’t worry, I know all about toei. The footage in this video has been flipped horizontally which should be more than enough for a channel as small as this to get by. Don’t plan on covering their other works anytime soon so that’s good too
Interesting way to do it. Since I watched the KyoAni version first, I can't help but having a huge expectation for the movie. Maybe it's just that expectation that ruined the movie. Or maybe not and the movie is just bad, period. But I'll go with this angle sometime later.
@@choi-r7108 I had the advantage of knowing it was bad in the first place. Maybe watching it drunk might help (assuming you drink). Never tried it tho.
Fr!! After I finished Clannad After Story, I came upon the movie and decided to check it out. As soon as I saw how different the characters looked, not only different, how BAD they looked compared to how they look now. I thought of clicking off but decided not to because I knew that I would get used to it eventually, but honestly, it just wasn’t going well and I clicked off..I’ve tried countless amounts of times to force myself into watching it but I just can’t. I’m so glad the series came out after the movie or else things probably would’ve been a little different..Though, I still haven’t managed to watch through the entire thing, thankfully I don’t think I will because this video gave me more than enough information on it.
Saw this long before you reviewed it, so thanks for being late. Kidding😁. But luckily I saw the series first. 1. Yeah definitely seems like bad adaptations don't even fully commit to being for a general audience. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for example downplaying the miracle of Grandpa Joe being able to walk cause the previous film adaptation made it a musical number. 2. Yeah best example of the above besides the rest of his friends making a cameo and then abruptly being important by the end? I mean the movie does have one instance of Naoyuki abusing Tomoya, but otherwise downplays is and makes our lead seem like a guy with seldom reason to be the way he is. Heck, the flashback suggests even before that injury that he didn't appreciate the much more adjusted Naoyuki, so really Tomoya if he had first world problems. 3. More of a pacing side effect, but besides the writing of the much better series, it's another enjoyable case where characters hooking up isn't a sign that your story is ending (soon). Even in romance stories it can be a trial to find cases where the hook up is the start of a better story. So basically Tomoya and Nagisa in the film hook up, and their time together is exposition, then Nagisa passes away. Wonderful.
I saw this movie after watching the entire series... for a long while up until about today, I thought this movie was an add on or summary extra to the 2008 kyotoani series. Yikes
the only reasons i find for the high ratings on this movie is because the ratings were made before the kyoani series arrived and then people had nothing else than the game (and they were probably just 5% of them who actually played it or even acknowledged it) and took the movie as is... If the movie was made after the kyoani series, the movie's ratings would have been way more low. :p
I’ve not seen it someone told me it’s just a rushed plot, but I’m glad quoto picked it up because it’s such a good show, The same thing happened with kanon too so quotos always there to take over, but i am more interested in watching the original kanon than clannad because it definitely is better than what they did to Clannad, So other than it looking funny it should be ok but clannad was butchered but clannad is still my favourite
I love the anime show, but the movie… I couldn’t get into it- didn’t care for it. That’s unusual for me especially since I was 12 or 13 when watching this movie and every anime I usually watch I actually see nothing wrong with it and find them enjoyable despite the flaws but this… I hated it. The animation was a little different from the show I thought… plus, it’s just not that good. It seemed boring to me also. I honestly didn’t even finish the movie actually- I only could watch like 10 -20 minutes of it
Also, you never answered the question at the end of if the if the getting kick out of school thing was real.... I was thinking that story would tie into the video somehow. Though either way that was a great viewer audience hook and plan to shamelessly use that idea for one of my own videos, so I applaud you good sir
“We’re talking about one world, but there could be any number of them. After all, there may be just as many worlds as there are possibilities in our lives.” -Kotomi I’d like to believe that this movie is another world, another timeline. A timeline where all the other characters try their damn hardest to knock some life into Tomoya instead of him figuring things out on his own or with just the right amount of help. Annnnd with that being said, not all timelines are gonna be great. This one sucked lol
Lol this actually isn't the first time Toei has tried to adapt a Key work 🤣 If you feel up to it, you can try watching their 2002 adaptation of Kanon and their 2005 movie adaptation of Air, which was also directed by Osamu Dezaki On another note, I hope you cover KyoAni's other adaptations of Key's VN's, namely Air TV and Kanon 2006, I'd love to hear your thoughts! 😁
The Clannad movie was an artistic abomination visually and a story telling nightmare. Even if you judge it on it's own merits and not as an adaptation. Certain characters like Tomoyo are portrayed as villains at first but then are randomly seen as friends with the main cast with zero explanation. That is just illogical on a story telling level to have A character make that sort of shift without explanation. Which brings me to another problem in this fucking movie, the prioritizing of events. It had no sense of priorities, it spent more time showing us pretentious and pointless visuals along with all the festival/club preparation scenes then it did the actual character arc of Tomoya in relation with Nagisa. It took it's sweet time over-establishing Sunohara's character as this spunky and violent, perverted person. The film had well established this side characters side personality and just kept demonstrating that and spending time on it with no contribution to either the narrative or even to Sunohara's character individually for that matter. As the film starts out there is no initial intrigue or hook that makes you interested in Tomoya. Nagisa has one thing intriguing moment in the begging where it is mentioned that they can't walk up the hill to School by themselves without motivation. You would think that A plot element that important would be brought up again as it may tie into their illness or at least tie into there motivations as a character, but not only does it never bring that seemingly important aspect of the story up again after that except for twice just for the sake of establishing Nagisa's motivation for walking up to the School. But in the begging Tomoya doesn't even question that random, unique and almost supernatural phenomenon. It really butchers the realism in Tomoya's initial jaded attitude as even with a jaded attitude not questioning something or even caring about something as different as that is simply not realistic. The pacing was weird and it spent about 2/3 of the film dealing with the events of the original Clannad, which they EXTREMLY FUCKING butchered the events thereof. Then it spent the last 1/3 of the movie adapting the more important part of Clannad, After Story, then chooses to give less detail to the more important shit, this isn't some difficult thing to dissect this is a question of simply abiding by story telling 101! There are many things about this movie I could point out, like how some of the music felt uncomfortable and out of place in establishing proper tone or how the whole film turned Nagisa into a plot device to drive Tomoya's already ruined character arc but if I called out everything I fucking hated about this goddamn movie this comment would be like twice as long if not longer!😭 3/10
It's okay. It's definitely its own separate universe though. And it definitely doesn't hit as hard as the anime but then again it's probably because since it's just one movie, they had to condense a lot of the plot so many of the plot twists in the original two clannad series, so it felt a bit rushed here and there
I disagree that this movie is bad, but obviously it’s the weakest iteration of the story. Idk maybe I’m just biased because I love Osamu Dezaki’s directing style and the overall vibe keeps me coming back to it every so often (like once a year). And about the style, I don’t think it’s meant to be realistic and shouldn’t be taken that way. It’s like pointing out the flaws in something when those “flaws” were actually intended. I’ve watched a lot of Dezaki’s stuff, he just likes making movies that way. It’s not a budgetary issue or a monetary issue, it was a choice. It’s very much like his work from the 70s. However the Black Jack OVA and Movie from the 90s is my favourite work of Dezaki’s that I’ve seen. My gripe with the movie is Tomoya though, so you took the words out of my mouth with that. Kyoani outdid themselves with their adaptation, probably as close to perfect as you can get with an adaptation, but I’ll always enjoy the movie as well. Just not for the reasons that Toei was hoping. Primarily I just like how it looks a lot. Great video nonetheless. It’s good to see this lesser known version spoken about, even if it is comically negative about it. Air: The Motion Picture is, however, the best version of Air. I fucking hate the original and the Kyoani anime versions of Air. It gave me cancer.
This movie is cursed. Sunohara actually being useful?? Butchering Kyou and Tomoyo?? Blasphemy. I think the movie proves how important EVERY character, in addition to their backstories, is to the story and make-up of Clannad itself. You can't just randomly throw in characters at the end as if they were present the entire time; this creates a much lesser impact in the end. Tomoya and Nagisa without the others, feel and come off as completely souless characters you'd see in some random flavor of the month romance anime. That is basically what this movie is.
I even if I'm talking shit and fanatic, hear my review. This is just faithful adaptation of mount everest height story. Litreally the character count and time per characters makes these one of the longest novels to read. But the movie was on the theme, "Don't expect anything but reality, and reality is already sucks." The ending kinda justifies it. And the movie kept me occupied, BECAUSE I DUCKING read the novel.
I agree- it was such a disappointment. I think it's rated that highly because of fans from the game that were in denial or people that love the series so much that they can't see it have a low rating - whatever the case it doesn't make sense😥 also what your brother says - YA I agree it seems to be unavoidable. Godddddd this movie if awful XD. it wasn't just the dream it just happened so suddenly ? like such a quick skip ? idk I can't remember since I watched it in like 2009 ? 2010 ? MAN THIS MOVIE SUCKS AND I DON'T WANNA REWATCH TO HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY BUT I REMEMBER A SUDDEN SKIP ???? YEAH HIS DAUGHTER WAS JUST RANDOMLY THERE- AND JUST LIKE THAT HE WAS LIKE "AIGHT I'LL BE A DAD NOW" WHAT ?? I forgot it revealed so quickly that she was going to die but that makes sense considering the only thing my brain allows me to remember is "its ass" . I think my brain just wanted to block that movie out and move along.... yeah thank god kyo ani stepped in🤣
@@Totaraum twas a false alarm, i herd you say the line feble girl and it sounded like you said female girl (been up almost 20 hours when watching this so it was my time hearing) and now my misherd video caption shall forever be on the internet
WOW........After warching borh Clannad and Clannad Afterstory the idea that you can condense that down to a theatrical feature sounds absolutely terrible. No way any of the nuance and emotional impact remained intact. The visuals dont even look as good as the series.
Very weird that people like the Air movie but despise the Clannad movie. Personally, I think both the Air movie and Clannad movie are awful. The series for both shows are vastly superior. Air tv series is a slight mess and has a lot of glaring flaws but at least it has much better emotional value and the relationship with Yukito and Misuzu is nicely fleshed out. The movie failed on those aspects epically.
@@Totaraum You can give the Air movie a go but it will just infuriate you, like the Clannad movie did. I think the reason why the Air movie is decently rated in comparison with the Clannad movie is probably because people think that Clannad has a much broader and complex story and the characters are far more engaging. To take all that out in the movie is a huge insult. With Air, the supporting characters in the series are hardly relevant anyway and most likely because there was too much going on whilst the movie just stuck with the basics. But just because the movie simplified it does not mean it's better. I don't think it is anyway. Kanon 2006 is the best out of all of them. If you haven't seen it. I highly recommend it. It did not need a movie to make another adaptation, it's great the way it is. It flows much more nicely than both Clannad and Air.
The movie is better than the anime solely for Sunohara's portrayal. I can't take the anime serious anymore after see how much better he's treated in the movie.
Clannad isn't a story you can tell in a movie runtime. One of the things that makes it so good are the characters, who simply cannot be developed in 2 hours
I completely agree. I wish they had tried to tell a more unique, smaller scale story with the same characters

i would say at minimum, 2 movies, but yeah to get the heart string pulling you need time to build the characters and why we love them.

There are many things about this movie I could point out, like how some of the music felt uncomfortable and out of place in establishing proper tone or how the whole film turned Nagisa into a plot device to drive Tomoya's already ruined character arc but if I called out everything I fucking hated about this goddamn movie this comment would be like twice as long if not longer!😭
3/10
ok but is the story at the start actually real raum
It's not lol
Must be true for some part hahaha
intro scenario happens to me all the time too :/
'tis a tough time to be a student
I think 3 movies would be best 1 for Clannad, one up to nagisas death and one for the rest of clannad
I honestly just see this movie as a glimpse into an alternate reality. Like the OVAs
It's okay. It's definitely its own separate universe though. And it definitely doesn't hit as hard as the anime but then again it's probably because since it's just one movie, they had to condense a lot of the plot so many of the plot twists in the original two clannad series, so it felt a bit rushed here and there
I do like that they have nagisa wearing her scarf tho
Honestly, only Sunohara is great in this movie
I don’t know why they made him such a stand up guy but I like him a lot here
I disagree that this movie is bad, but obviously it’s the weakest iteration of the story.
But the movie was on the theme, "Don't expect anything but reality, and reality is already sucks."
The ending kinda justifies it. And the movie kept me occupied, BECAUSE I DUCKING read the novel.
I didn't hate the movie because it gave Sunohara some substance, something that was lacking in the VN and Anime.
I think my brain just wanted to block that movie out and move along.... yeah thank god kyo ani stepped in🤣
My thoughts exactly lmao
Can you please make a video dissecting all of the visual novel routes in clannad please?
That’s definitely on my list of videos to make! I’ll probably have to break it down to one route per video
@@Totaraum Awesome thanks so much!!!!
idky but the line a female girl will forever stick with me
is that from the movie?
@@Totaraum twas a false alarm, i herd you say the line feble girl and it sounded like you said female girl (been up almost 20 hours when watching this so it was my time hearing)
and now my misherd video caption shall forever be on the internet
@@chJohnJobs lol I understand that feeling, go get some rest man
nog-uh-suh ???????
WOW........After warching borh Clannad and Clannad Afterstory the idea that you can condense that down to a theatrical feature sounds absolutely terrible. No way any of the nuance and emotional impact remained intact. The visuals dont even look as good as the series.
So the only thing I liked about the movie was how we get to see how depressed the main character is. After his wife dies
As a person who has witnessed this movie, don't fucking watch it
now that you said that i feel like everybody is gonna watch it, granted they will regret it afterwards
The only good thing about this movie was seeing Sunohara taking a piss, everything else was a disappoinment
lmao
Very weird that people like the Air movie but despise the Clannad movie. Personally, I think both the Air movie and Clannad movie are awful. The series for both shows are vastly superior. Air tv series is a slight mess and has a lot of glaring flaws but at least it has much better emotional value and the relationship with Yukito and Misuzu is nicely fleshed out. The movie failed on those aspects epically.
I haven't seen the air movie, but I know what you mean. People tend to praise it quite a bit
@@bunchberry9957 I see, and yeah, Kanon 2006 is great. The Toei version, not so much
@@Totaraum The Toei one is horrendous. The art style is disgusting. Maybe Toei are just really bad at adapting visual novels?
I thought the Clannad movie was an April Fools joke.
Can’t blame you for that one
It looks like berserk 2016
And that’s saying something
The ultimate insult
How about dragon Ball evolution😂😂😂
Saddest part is that the director of this movie is my favourite director 😢
This one hurt me when I first saw it. A lot.
Air Movie by Toei Animation is good
But Clannad Movie is huge downgrade.
I’ve heard they did a good job with air, I’ll have to give it a watch
I. . . agree with everything. . .
A simple Dango man...
No dislikes. As it should be.
This movie is awful, I don't know how they managed to ruin such a great series
the movie came out before the tv show
They didn't. The TV series came out after this.
Toei f up clannad movie.....but i still love it coz u know clannad
This is a real thing? Woah
Yup, it’s wild
Im scared
Okey, thanks :) I wouldnt
Lmao I haven't watched it
That’s probably for the better lol
The movie is better than the anime solely for Sunohara's portrayal. I can't take the anime serious anymore after see how much better he's treated in the movie.
I think that's way too extreme lol
I'm glad I'm not the only one who hated the movie.
