  • It's BIG. It's bad. It's more interesting than that old Dos Equis guy. It's forged in dragons fire and quenched in testosterone. It's the TOPS SXB, designed by EJ Snyder. And it's now in The Gauntlet...

Had mine about a month now, all I can say is it’s a work horse. Love everything about it. A hand hatch, like you said, it pretty much murders anything it comes in contact with, one awesome tool to have. Great video thanks for sharing.

I've had my Skullcrusher for a couple years now and love it. Alot of people give me the gears about how it's too big as well, but that being said it has more uses for me.
I wish I had this twenty years ago when I was in the bush all the time.

If you love the tracker, you'll love the sxb. If you don't like the Tracker, you'll hate the SXB. I was a huge fan of the tracker for a long time. This SXB has since taken top spot in my go-everywhere arsenal. For fans of the big outdoors knives, this blade is the undisputed king.

You know I was just sitting here watching your video like the hundreds of other knife videos I watch and I got to thinking how funny it is that guys like me will sit here perfectly content watching another guy chopping wood. Lol after all this time we should all know exactly what something is gonna chop like just from looking at it. For some reason I still find it interesting. Knife addict lol

Chris is actually an okay chopper too which is a relief to see, among others. Some of these dudes just kinda throw the knife at the wood while its still in their hand? Just flailing.
Sometimes I sit and bitch at my phone during videos like that lol
"Wrong angle dumbass!!! No!! What are you fucking cross-eyed???"
.... "No wonder dude its hickory!!! Its not the knife, pay attention!!!"
      "You swing like a bitch!!"
      Lol common to hear

I almost feel like when it comes to knives like this that are both huge and have unique features, the designer should release a comprehensive instructional video showing all of the different ways to use the knife and take advantage of its design features. Because like you said Chris, this knife is not going to be very intuitive to someone that's used to using something smaller like a Mora. So I think some instruction with this knife would be in order. =)

One issue I have with my Tracker II (yeah, I wanted one ever since I saw "that movie" and bought it when I came into a little $) is that there's not really a lot of edge that hits when I'm chopping with it. It either falls on the "hook" part or kind of glances off the belly part. This larger design with a longer (actual) chopping portion seems to answer the problem. I also like that the sawback/notcher is down lower on the blade so that they wouldn't get messed up when battoning. You can also use the "draw knife" portion without the notch teeth digging into your hands.
Honestly, if I was going to "fix" the tracker and didn't mind carrying something the size and weight of a Filipino bolo, this might be it.

Really good review Chris. I like the fact that you mentioned in the beginning that there is a difference between a bushcrafting knife and a one-tool-option-knife. I have the same experience with my Habilis Bushtool. These kind of knifes are supposed to be a tool with different tasks and therefore we have things like heavy weight, bulkyness etc to consider. Thanks for the review! Cheers, Marc

  • @Tbowie13

I know this is an old video, but I think that knife is a decent one knife trap maker. you can notch, and plane with it, along with chopping and some fine work on the back edge. I don't think it's a replacement for a good Scandinavian grind bushcraft though...not by a Longshot. Both would be useful, but if I'm carrying two tools, give me a Gransfors Bruks are and a Bushcraft knife and call it a day.

Your mother may have warned you about this knife, but mine got me one for Christmas... though I haven't had a chance to try it out yet (I've only had it less than a day) I can tell this thing is a beast of a knife. it has good heft, but not so much as to make it unwieldy. Nice and sharp straight from the package. The blade shape gives it both knife and ax characteristics. I'm already in love with this knife...... The only thing that I don't like is the indentation between the blade and guard, to me this is just an area to get caught up on.

  • @feralwoodcraft
    @feralwoodcraft 9 років тому

That is a beast, no other way to put it. You're right it is heavy but the handle and overall length does give it surprising balance. I'm looking forward to seeing this one progress.

I have one and it's brilliant! Gives me blisters but I just got some gloves. It is my go to one tool option. I use it more than my USMC Ka Bar. In fact it's better for close work and feather sticks than the Ka Bar (to be fair, my Ka Bar is part serrated). Its awesome! I have chopped through a telegraph pole with mine. It probably chops as well as my Jess X. Keep up the good work Chris!

Thanks for the review!!! I'm glad you got it out fast! I'll be getting it for sure now. I'm used to a big knife and use my RTAK II for most things. I always have a folder on me for the smaller stuff. I've been waiting for something like this with more weight and length in the head like a hatchet. This paired with one of my folders is going to be perfect. I'm a bigger guy so things that are "up-sized" don't bother me. I look forward to Part 2!

It's an interesting looking knife. I'll give you that, and I definitely like it better than the Tom Brown Tracker. There are a couple of things that I would do to it right away though.
First of all, for a knife that big I would want a forward mounted lanyard. I do not like a rear mounted lanyard for chopping with a large knife. If the knife slips it's likely to go forward several inches and then come bouncing right back at the user. Needless to say, that's a bit on the dangerous side. There are holes in each side of the guard, so putting a lanyard there wouldn't be difficult.
The second thing I would do is to file that little area right behind the saw so that it's got a sharp 90° edge for striking a ferro rod. That's probably less than five minutes of work for a significant upgrade in usefulness. I used to have a Tops Steel Eagle 107C. At first I really liked it and thought that the saw on the back would be useful, but as I became better educated about knives & their uses I liked the saw less & less. The only thing I ever used it for was notching, and the saws on my SAK & my Leatherman worked better for that. As short as the saw on that knife is it would be even less useful than the saw on the 107C. I'd like to see them do away with that feature entirely.
It's probably not a knife that I would buy, but I do see how it could make for a good large knife. My only real issues with it are the saw and the lack of a 90° spine. Well, that and that damn 'traction' coating Tops insists upon using. I hate those dumbass rough coatings!

With it having two blades pretty much the back blade could have a lower angle, maybe in the 20's for fine work and the front edge so where round 30° for chopping. Very cool!

I've been investigating a one tool option for some time. This knife is at the top of the list for an honest to goodness survival, do many tasks, knife. As with other knives of this kind, they aren't suppose to do everything real well, as I understand it, but be able to do a lot of them, as you suggested, well enough to survive, is that correct? Thanks for your review. Makes me want one more than ever. Not quite ready to buy, I'm still testing some other blades, but WOW, what a tool. Thanks amigo. // Filing behind the Grooving-teeth, to make a nice 90 degree edge, towards the handle should be a lot more convenient to strike a Ferro rod, shouldn't it?

I like it! I just can't afford a 200 dollar knife. I could buy one....I just can't justify it.....yet. This is like my journey with firearms. starting out I couldn't understand why someone would spend 1500 dollars on a handgun, but now.... I know why. Quality cost money, I can only assume same goes for blades.

One tool option ? personally I don't think so ! I moved my thinking away from big blade's but this knife might have changed that thinking, I think if you teamed this blade up with a good multi tool or small blade you could have a very good kit, it's all about POU, my thinking would be SXB+Mora Light My Fire+Opinel.

The more I look at big knives, the more I like hatchets.

Its like a Badass AX, and Machete, and overall Self Defense Beast of a tool it seems. I'm curious, did you remember it coming with a sheath?

Will you prefer this over a hatchet?
