The colonization of the past is different from the colonization of the present.
The past was physical which everyone could feel and see
    But
The present colonization is mental that one can not see it but feel it and money where people are volunteering into slavery in search of money to survive.

@Baobab Afrikaner: stop your tribalism. That is why Liberia is a “shit hole” today. The so called “Konqua” are they not descendants of people who were taken from Africa as enslaved people?
There was no country called Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, or other Africa Countries with these present names or borders: the White people gave these names when they divided Africa at the Berlin Conference.
Blame the White Man for capturing your ancestors and returning them back to Liberia.
You all should learn to live together in peace . The “Konqua” as you called your fellow citizens are descendants of your lost cousins who came back to Africa specifically Liberia and Sierra Leone ( by the British).

Why is this comment allowed to stay? It is divisive and also INACCURATE.
African Americans came and BOUGHT the land from some of the chiefs in the area to start over in Africa after becoming free from slavery.... But then, for reasons unknown, they bought the land but then also had to share it with the people they bought it from? I don't understand that part of the history. If I buy a house from a family, that family doesn't get to stay in the house and live with me afterwards but that's a different discussion I guess.
When African Americans established Liberia they witnessed first hand, the local tribes still partaking in the illegal slave trade(they were taking Africans to the coast to sell to the Portuguese) This obviously offended Liberians(talking about newly settled African Americans in Liberia) and they took direct action to stop this trade. This upset the locals, as it was effecting their trade.
As a result, local tribes regularly attacked the small and fragile Liberian settlements for over a decade until the Liberians decisively defeated the local tribes and peace was established between the Liberian settlements and the local tribes.
As a result of these early interactions, the Liberians(so called americo Liberians) rightfully distrusted the local tribes and tried to keep them away from Liberia.
Over time, though, more and more trust was established and Liberia began to integrate the local tribes into Liberia proper(making them Liberians as well) this included adopting children from local tribes, providing schooling, apprenticeship, training, and stable jobs in the government. Some were even sent to Europe and America to go to American colleges and universities and come back to help Liberia. This was a great system that was expanding more and more under Tolbert as he truly tried to integrate the natives into Liberia.
They were also allowed to join the military and over time became the majority of the military personnel (this was obviously a mistake)
So as you can see, Liberians WERE integrating the local tribes into Liberia but the native population decided that they just wanted to take over everything and killed most of the Liberian ran government in 1980.
Having taken over Liberian with all the infrastructure undamaged and ready for use, what did they do with it? They destroyed it all in stupid tribal wars and Liberia is still recovering from it.
Judging by the upvotes for the original comment it seems that anti African American(so called americo Liberians) feelings are still there which is sad because they were not the ones to actually destroy the country.
At this point(2019 going into 2020) there should be no more talk of natives vs Congo people(so called americo Liberians)... We should all just be Liberians from now on and follow the example set by Rwanda.

I accept the explanation of most of the ones who commented in the video. The free black Americans who created Liberia through the American colonial society were already westernized. However, many aboriginals on the green coast (Liberia) were also westernized(more than those inland) because they were use to trading with Europeans for centuries. So it was easier for the free black Americans to integrate with some of the Native tribes on the coastline. The friction was mostly with the less westernized natives further inland who had an alliance with Great Britain in whom they traded with. There was also a culture conflict. When the black Americans arrived at the green coast they complained in their journal that some of the natives were selling slaves to the Portuguese. It should be obvious why freed black Americans would have a problem with that. However, with that said I also believe that black Americans went to far in making the Natives Assimilate. At the end of the day the conflict was about a difference in culture and not knowing how to live in harmony with such differences. This is a lesson for us to learn from! Black Americans will always be connected to Liberia but we need to learn from the mistakes our ancestors made. We also need to reconnect with the country and it's natives. All of its natives! We have to learn their languages and customs as they learn ours. This way we can overcome the cultural divide that caused the civil war.

We are talking about Control. And there are various levels of control. It was/is recognized as an independent nation. It was a member of the League of Nations during the height of Colonialism. It had/has Black political leaders. Colonialism's definition includes full or partial political control, occupying the land with settlers and exploiting it economically. I would say 2 out of 3 there. No white settlers, but if you call the freed slaves settlers, and agents of America then you could conclude yes all 3. I would say that Liberia has always existed in a state of Neo-Colonialism when most of the rest of Africa was in regular ol' Colonialism.

Colonization was not always done by Countries. Parts of America were colonized by the Hudson Bay Company. India was colonized by the East India Company. European countries gave charters to companies to establish "outposts" in the Americas, Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. These outpost is where they established trade and later started to push their cultural imperatives. It is important that people understand this part of history because it is happening again. A country does not have to be conquered to be colonized. It can be colonized by controlling its trade, commerce, official language, dominant religion, form of government, etc. It's 2019. Our Liberian brothers who said "No" are attempting to explain colonization away by using semantics. They are in denial because it really doesn't matter whether an invading entity is a country or an organization... if outside forces take socio-economic control over another peoples skills, land, wealty and natural resources, they are colonizers. If Liberia wasn't colonized, they would never have had to reclaim their independence.
In reality every corner of Africa, including Liberia (who was occupied by American goverment forces) and Ethiopia (which was not formally colonized, but was definitely invaded and occupied by Portuguese and Italian forces) were colonized, or oppressed ( if thats what you want to call it) in some form or fashion. These European tyrants left no stone unturned...just terrible.

There isn't any European countrie that follows Oriental Orthodox Christianity. If someone in western Europe depicted some saints as a "white" it doesn't mean that Christianity is white. Orthodox churches depict their saints in "brownish" colours as it should be considering that many saints were Semitic people. You should have known that Catholicism isn't the only branch of Christianity. Don't make conclusions about topics you are not aware of.

The accurate answer to this question is NO. The ACS established colonies in what we call Liberia today. Other similar colonies were also set-up in what we call Liberia today(e. G. The Maryland settlement) eventually, all the separate settlements came together and decided to become one and declared independence from ACS. Thus Liberia was THEN established. So again, Liberia was not colonized.

Whatever we call it politically, foreign interference has inhibited African nations from developing social and commercially, or building infrastructure.

My husband is Liberian and they were colonized hence the name Liberia and the capital being named Monrovia after an American at the time and they speak English!!!!! Wake up people. Yes there were Aboriginals there already but free blacks Aboriginal to America helped with the colonization whether knowing/unknowingly which is one of the main reasons my husband and a lot of his family are back in America bc of wars with the blacks vs blacks and too many families dying for the colonizers greed to take over the natural resources. A good way to know if a place is colonized look at the language they speak and you'll know who the colonizers are. Denial is real amongst melanated people worldwide.

Liberia wasn't traditionally colonized like other African countries. America established it under the ACS (American Colonization Society 1817). 1847 Liberia became independent from America. Liberia technically was colonized by America from 1817 to 1847. America established Liberia for freed African American Slaves to return to Africa. These people were called Americo-Liberians. Liberia is the most American place in Africa. As an African American, I am blessed to be African. Liberian learn American English in school. Americo-Liberians ruled from 1847-1980. During this time America had their hand in Liberia until the coup was done and the Americo-Liberians were overthrown. Charles Doe was the first indigenous Liberian to rule 1980-1986. He was of Krahn ethnic group. Thanks, Wode Maya for this video. Here are a few references regarding the History of Liberia the American colony 1817-1847 that was founded by African American freed slaves.

Brief History: Gained it's independent in July 26 1847
Founder; The ACS (America Colonization Society)
The Deceleration of independent was sing in a church (Baptist Church) is the oldest church in Monrovia.
The capital city was name after the fifth president of America, the first name of the capital city was Christopolist( meaning city of Christ) Liberia was never colonized, but founder by free slave from America in the 1800s, they first came in 1822 on a ship called Elezibath their trips to the Green Cost was sponsored by the ACS. The group that came from USA was lead by the ACS appointed Agent , after that they founded the Commonwealth government. That government decided to no longer more be under the leadership of the ACS, and there where it's all begin the journey to independent.

ACS was an Organization that took upon itself to repatriate slaves back to Africa. When the slaves arrived, there were indigenous Liberians in Liberia. This is why The slaves called “Americo Liberians don’t have a specific county because they came late. Liberia was not colonized by the USA. Liberia was only used as a receiving country or region for free slaves.
