I grew up around a bunch of Liberian refugees in the 90s, and one of the cultural things that I picked up from them is the snap-handshake thing. That is, when they shake hands, they snap their fingers, but it's a shared snap. You apply pressure with your middle finger against the other person's middle finger during the shake, so when you pull back it makes a snap. If you can do it, it's a fun way to show off cultural competency to other Liberians.

It took me until senior year of high school to figure out that this place existed and even then it was a brief mention in a world history class. For some reason the American education system likes to leave out places like Liberia and Puerto Rico, and it's a bit of a shame because these places help improve understanding of continental USA history tremendously.

Guam suffered brutally during World War II at the hands of the Japanese, but the native Chamorros stayed loyal to us despite the occupiers' attempts to change them by force. While growing up in Costa Rica, we had to learn the capital cities of each province. Coincidently, there is a city in the Province of Guanacaste called: Liberia. So, after moving on to learning about other countries in the world, I came across that indeed there was a country named Liberia. I had thought somehow that there was a connection with the people from Guanacaste or the Liberians. I don’t know where the name Liberia originated from (whether it was Spanish, Portuguese, English or Other). I don’t think Barby discussed it in this episode; but the fact that Costa Rica’s Second International Airport is located in the city by the same name as an African Country with no relation to each other is quite interesting.

6:48 Myanmar dont use imperial, they use their own traditional system
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myanmar_units_of_measurement

    • @tretbootpilot

According to the CIA World Factbook it is even more complicated. Burmanese people use their traditional units in everyday life, while govermental agencies are using imperial or metric units, depending on the agency. Therefore distances on a road are shown in miles while the maps are metric. But due to their recent opening up to the world they are considering adapting metric in the near future.

In Bahrain we also say “La” after every sentence which is funny because La also means no in Arabic. So we say “ Ee La” which literally translates to Yes No. confuses people but we love our La’s

    All hail, Liberia, hail!
    All hail, Liberia, hail!
    This glorious land of liberty
    Shall long be ours.
    Though new her name,
    Green be her fame,
    And mighty be her powers,
    Though new her name,
    Green be her fame,
    And mighty be her powers,
    And mighty be her powers,
    And mighty be her powers,
    In joy and gladness
    With our hearts united,
    We'll shout the freedom
    Of a race benighted,
    Long live Liberia, happy land!
    A home of glorious liberty,
    By God's command!
    A home of glorious liberty,
    By God's command!
    All hail, Liberia, hail!
    All hail, Liberia, hail!
In union strong success is sure
    We cannot fail!
    With God above
    Our rights to prove
    We will o'er all prevail,
    We will o'er all prevail,
    We will o'er all prevail,
    With heart and hand
    Our country's cause defending
    We'll meet the foe
    With valor unpretending.
    Long live Liberia, happy land!
    A home of glorious liberty,
    By God's command!
    A home of glorious liberty,
    By God's command! 🇱🇷💕💕💕💕💕

I am a Liberian and I've been waiting for 2yrs for this day. Thanks man for this great episode but do you know Liberia also known as a nation of records? It is Africa's first Republic and served as the Mecca of Pan African Liberation movements from Algeria to Zimbabwe by promoting and patronizing African quest for independence. Do you know the Kru tribe of Liberia were considered "UNDESIRABLES" by European because of they were very evasive to capture and even an attempt to capture them would lead them fight to their death? Liberia is also very easy to visit when traveling from the United States- take a KLM flight from any of the major East Coast city transit in Amsterdam and get to Liberia direct.
