@rbalfanz I believe (without having any background here), that the 'A' shape was intentionally set up as an initial condition to demonstrate that some partitions can remain somewhat stable. It wouldn't be stable if far fewer (or far more) partitions started in the middle of the 'A', in which case it would deform - but there's enough internal "pressure" to let it keep its shape. Just my guess.
