So there I was, relaxing in a bar in the Maldives, when out of the blue this little gem was played through piped music. Instantly took me back to over 30 years ago when I first purchased the track. Highlight of my holiday.
One year later (this track is from 1990, so in 1991) one of my favo tracks became a hit for weeks. Back then probably the hardest beat on the radio, until not much later I discovered Stadradio Rotterdam, which from Hellevoetsluis was no problem receiving without cracks etc. Always taping the episodes with friends, sometimes you did get annoying stuff in between though, will post an example and that one track I talked about! I listened to synthesizer greatest, tour of duty tapes, jive bunny mixes (lol, "let's do the twist!") and of course the dance on the radio back then, but that was too commercial and slow for me (2 unlimited, Capella, 2 Brothers on the 4th Floor, Captain Hollywood Project, Culture Beat, Leila K, etc.)…. But also tracks which I did like, such as Das Boot from U96, which was probably 1 or 2 year prior to 1990, Outer Space from the Prodigy was around that time, I secretly liked Dr. Alban, Felix with Don't You Want Me, one or two tracks by KLF...good times. Okay...links are probably being removed automatically, will post the one track below and then an example of Stadsradio Rotterdam with "Turbulentie". It was either from the start or later on, two hours. The first would be with people like Mark van Dale and other DJs playing 'mellow', or the sort of stuff you'd hear on Escape and IT compilation albums, didn't really enjoy those for maybe some tracks. The real deal came in the 2nd hour! A mix of Acid/Techno/Rave and then later on the typical gabber beats/snares/drums/claps etc.
Ok, here the track that was actually hard for that time. The guy is Wessel van Diepen (didn't know that back then), later found out he also produced Alice DJ, Vengaboys and some other acts. Knowing it was made by Wessel, you can hear his voice. For non Dutch people, he was a radio DJ as in one that talks in between music, not the mixing kind.... LA Style - James Brown is Dead!!!!! Absolutely NOTHING comes close to pure FUNKEEEE bass and that BREAK....oh my fucking god, this tune CHANGED my life when I first heard it in 1992 - and it's still one of the greatest HipHouse tunes ever.
Was 14 when this came out. Remember a friend playing this in his bedroom on his tape deck and just being totally stunned by the bassline. The beat I loved, the rapping sounded great but that bassline over that beat, just the coolest thing I'd ever heard.

Took the album with me on a trip to Iceland. The people there loved it as much as I did. Sold it to one of them and bought another copy when I was back home. Still occasionally play it. This particular songs brings back some wonderful memories :)
