I really enjoyed that. They are well covered and look as though they’ve come well out of winter. Goes to show they need us rugging and faffing and finding extra stuff..Here in England we’ve lost a lot of natural pasture. I’m sure those horses have a wonderful variety to eat. Some good bone there and fabulous makings. And how wonderful to watch the natural herd- Thank you for posting X🕊👍🏼😁
Yeah that solid grey younger stallion to be is so sassy. Fun to watch him too. And again scenery blows me away. I used to live in Boulder Colorado so the mountain range is my heart
Man oh man! He throws some seriously pretty babies! Looks like he has a bunch of the original Spanish blood there, with that crest! And I have a feeling ol Thor has probably got a few of those babies to his credit, he just ain't been caught at it!
There's a beautiful band of horses in the Pryor Mountains, as well. This group is in a sanctuary established for their protection. Thor is a very handsome stallion!!
Oh my goodness THANK YOU for posting a longer video specifically spotlighting Thor The Icon he is absolutely one of my favorites in the McCullough Peaks and is truly a force to be reckoned with. There’s just something about him that when you see him he stops your heart taking your breath away with his majestic magical self he’s absolutely incredible. This is definitely one of my favorite bands in general though they’re so special and what a privilege to be able to watch them together.❤️🔥❤️🔥🐎🥺
Thor is my favorite stallion and somehow he became band stallion because he now has a mini foal of him and her name is Thora with her mom Takoda. The paint is my favorite! Thank you for sharing this video of these wild and beautiful mustangs. ❤️🐴❤️
Just happened onto this vid. Fabulous horses! Chunky with lots of bone. Living as horses are meant to live. Horse Law! If a horse is coddled and not raised in a herd, it never learns horse law. A horse knowing it is much easier to train, provided the trainer also understands horse law. Horse already knows it should do what its told. But are they mustangs or is this private enterprise? What a great way to raise horses - survival of the fittest. Greetings from Australia.
Well that would only happen if the band were rounded up but fingers crossed that never occurs. Though if there ever comes a time when you have the right circumstances to adopt a mustang please please don’t take the BLM’s AIP money(they pay adopters around 150 dollars when you take a mustang)but this has lead to so many horrible situations for these horses of people pocketing the cash and then instantly dumping them in the slaughter pipeline or keeping them in deplorable conditions not fit for any creature. So please take your time do your research and learn what your getting into when and if you decide to get a mustang because they deserve to be treated well.
Reminds me of my old Flame, I tell my folks I'm as strong as a horse and they don't eat meat either.. just a thought. I'm blessed to have a painted herd, and they see little ole me as big Mamma!
It is psychology at it's finest. Two standing of a couple of dozen. The second in command doesn't get to breed until he decides to take on the boss, but they only do it one at a time in a real fight. The bachelors are always trying to cut out mares from the herd and make their own harem. They will sneak in and steal them when the stallion is fighting a Johnny come lately.
@@TheRoon4660 so actually the second one is only waiting for the time the other stallion is losing more and more control? Or is it more like a win-win-situation for both stallions?
I understand that having 2 stallions would be an advantage in protecting the band but what is in it for the junior stallion. If he is just waiting in the wings for a chance to stage a coup why would the lead stallion allow him to stay. Also, how was he chosen to be the junior?
Good questions. The second in command, or lieutenant stallion is able to do what he does best...move and protect the mares. I'm sure a coup is always in the back of his mind. One stallion alone would have a difficult time holding on to a dozen mares with so many bachelor stallions on the hunt. It's a team effort.
When there were herds of wild horses there wasn't just one stallion. The younger stallions took their place - in protection, fighting and learning their way(s) of a stallion - if they do something wrong, the mares cast them out until they're allowed back in - and the wild herds of horses.
We cannot lose his genes!!! Sabinos are not that common. He really needs his own mares to do this job. I think that's what makes me mad the most when they do round ups. They don't even think about the bloodlines or genetics of these horses. We've lost so many colors from the Mustang breed. I'm also sick of people not recognizing them as purebred, because even in private horse breeding 4 generations is considered registerable as a breed. I really hope advocates can start using bloodlines and colors and patterns to preserve and release any adult stallions and mares with these unique traits so future generations keep it alive and well.
I agree! Luckily with this herd it is very closely monitored by volunteers and if any of the well known horses are rounded up they will be released back to the range.
I think a smart thing to do would be when catching the mares, let other domesticated stallions at them. This would certainly help restore some of the gene pool. Though that'd require people owning these horses to not mind doing this with their stallions...
@@101Asa Thw wild horses have bred for many generations and hundreds of years with no help from man. Survival of the fittest. I don't think there is a domestic stallion anywhere who could stand up to what the wild horses endure. Wild horses have the toughest hooves of any horse.
@@karenkingart I still feel that with people and round-ups shrinking the gene pool, it might be a good idea to mix in new blood. Another idea is perhaps Chincoteague ponies helping a little? Or searching for any near-wild horses that could be helpful to bloodlines.
Have some of these mustangs been freeze branded? Great video. I didn't realize the bachelor herds were so huge -- good those mares have some extra protection for sure.

Really wonderful video! Beautiful horses in the magnificent Wyoming landscape. The quality of your video is outstanding. The resolution and the subtlties of color are exceptional. What camera are you using?
The yonger stallions can be kicked out by the band stallion around 2-3 yars old, sometimes longer if they don't become a threat and try to overthrow the band stallion.
Picasso was indeed a magnificent stallion he passed away back in 2018 I believe at about 30 years old so he was one of the oldest horses in that particular HMA at the time. His descendants are still out there on the range though including his daughters and a very handsome grandson of his that I saw on Instagram.
It’s usually the lead stallion(in this case Talequah)who breeds the mares lieutenant’s like Thor don’t get that privilege his main job is to act as Talequah’s muscle ensuing that no younger hotshot bachelors try to move in to steal some mares(though it can/does happen of course)
Beautiful herd! How much Spanish mustang is in the genetics? It doesn't look like much. The pintos are beautiful but largely the (European) tobiano spotting pattern, with the typical colored heads. To me they look more like domestic farm horses who escaped. I used to see herds of wild Spanish Barb Mustangs, so I personally like the wild markings that occur among Spanish Mustang herds. Talequah definitely does not have Spanish mustang spotting genes. Thor comes the closest with his jagged spots and lot of white on his head. I would like to see Thor be the breeder. 4:44 Enters from the right: one horse in the bachelor stallion herd that has more white, white on the face and more interesting markings.
Have you ever come across a Mustang that has rolled over onto a very sharp edged objects such as a stick or a piece of glass, metal.Which punchered the skin hitting a organ injuring, or killing the horse.
@@karenkingart Thank you so much for your reply. I guess it makes sense but these horses are so beautiful. I love young colts I think they are the sweetest babies next to our own.
The younger stallion is probably one of his sons are a stray one that has been in the band usually though when they get older and they’re waiting from their mothers is the head stallion Burnett and she’s of the bag runs them off and they usually the young male stallions until they can win a harem of their own of mares band together until they can do so is how this works otherwise the other stallion has to fight the main stallion for dominance in control of the herd and run the old stallion off
Again - all are so very beautiful - colours and patterns are amazing. Also horses smell better than cows and people.
Nothing more beautiful than a horse unless it's a herd. Those paints or pintos are my favorite. Thank you for your video.
