Rowley stealing the “Zoo Wee Mama!” comic from Greg is one of the strangest and worst character changes I’ve ever seen. Rowley is routinely shown to be a likable character in the books and even the Live Action movies, so why make him *Steal* something in this adaptation?

It’s honestly really difficult to believe the author himself wrote this movie. Very few times does an author writing a movie truly work. I mean look at JK Rowling and the fantastic beasts movies. The only time I can think an author successfully wrote a good movie was Jurassic Park
Well, I saw it as Rowley FINALLY realizing that Greg is never going to be a good friend, since Greg was using him, so Rowley decided to use HIM and his comics to win popularity points at school. Though, I DO still think it was out of character, since, as he himself says, "Joshie says a lie hurts everyone."

Greg saves Rowley from being hit in the face by a football on the first day, didn't tell his parents about the truth since he knew Rowley would be in a whole lot of trouble for lying, guiding him in middle school, protecting him after Greg mentions about the cheese, and destroying his reputation after telling everyone that he ate the cheese.

Yeah. I mean, the whole point of Greg is that he is an unlikable character. His personality is thinking highlyof himself. He is controlling over his "friend." But in this movie, Greg being likeable doesn't work for me because the joy of the original movies was watching Greg being a terrible person, and get consequences that feel satisfying. And when Greg does have something good happen to him, like at the end of Dog Days where he gets with Holly, it feels earned. But in the movie, I don't feel like his personality was changed enough to justify it when the movie wants us to feel bad for him. Sure, it was messed up for Rowley to steal his comic, but the reason Greg dropped it was that he thought that a comic strip needed to be funnier than that, and that people would be into more "sophisticated" humor, despite what the school shows him, with people laughing at even the slightest act of dumbness. Plus, he used words like "moron", and "cretin" in "Creighton the Cretin", which he should know wouldn't be accepted at school, which is why Rowley's wasn't changed.
Rodrick was always the only really likeable one for me in the animated/live action adaptations, everyone else went around the line of "Meh" to "Please just rewrite him/her"

It’s all about proper execution by being able to decide what parts can be taken out and what needs to stay as well as having a good reason to change certain aspects of the story. Look at the first 2 Harry Potter movies for example. IMO the first 2 movies are actually better than the books. However, movies 4-8 didn’t exactly do the best when trying to decide how the books should be adapted especially 4-6.
The movie is alright. 3/5 at best. I definitely like Greg more, the animation is that good but it’s fine, I guess. I wish they went for the animation in the teaser but whatever.
