- Yes, I'm late to the game as always. I haven't played Warhammer or 40K since 1996 and the same buddy I gamed with back then decided to join me in checking out the current version of Kill Team. 💥More below!⬇
When I first saw the Octarius box, I knew I wanted to paint up those ork kommandos. They just looked cool and I thought my friend, with his love of all things World War II and World War I, would probably dig the Krieg unit. We agreed to split the Kill Team starter box and get to painting, so I embarked upon what I think is my biggest speed painting project to date, comprising a total of 12 miniatures.

Ok You Sold Me! It's time to paint some Orcs. I watched Killer clowns from outer space back in 88 when I was living in FL. I was working at my first paying radio job. I laughed my ass off during the whole movie. For some reason my ex wife did not share my thoughts on the movie. 40K was the bomb back in the day. I knew a lot of guys who played it and even got into more then average games myself. There are times when I wished I had not given my stuff away, but as the saying goes. I needed the money. My favorite figure you painted was the guy in the wet suit. I Immediately started laughing as I was grabbing some sound bites from the movie Deliverance . Cue: Dueling Banjo's.

Killer Clowns from outer space is an awesome concept! So many inspirations for baller custom Kill Team. Ghostbusters, HellDivers, Fremen, Sardukar, Judge Dredd.

Try this, use a damp sponge to loosen the oils then subtract with a dry sponge. Damp, not wet.

The final detail step is part of speed painting. It's optional, and can take as much time as everything else, but chipped metal and final highlights can be the magic touch.
I would use a smaller sponge to clean up the oil if you're worried about it; but they look good, more oily and dirty then shaded.

@@tabletopalchemy NO BRO! I was saying that all the time you took on the chipped metal WAS the detail step! They look amazing. The speed painting detail step is about making the model pop, and you did exactly that. Especially since the oil wash really brought it out, and that's definitely an optional detail step. A nuln oil wash would have been plenty to give them depth way faster, but wouldn't look as good. Great work, you deserve to give yourself more credit.
@BouncingTribbles ah! I gotcha, thanks! The models I’m working on now don’t have any spots for shipping details so I’ll try just pushing the contrast after the initial shading with highlights. Always trying to learn lol.

I'm not a fan of 40k orks (have next to zero xp with 40k period) but these look damn good. As for the oil wash removal, foam makeup wedges cut to size and a hemostat. Lightly dampen the foam in thinner when needed. Cheers.

Try letting the oil wash dry for an hour or so. But then if you wait too long it's hard to take enough off lol I'm sure there's a sweet spot. Also i liked that you showed your process more in this one!

I keep thinking about trying speedpainting like this, but the fear of messing up always pulls me back to my current method! I do LOVE the final result you got from this method, so tempting. Especially the oil wash, I might have to give it a try!
Oh! I think speed painting is all about not worrying about messing up lol that’s what’s in my head when I approach it this way. But also, it’s pretty difficult to mess something up to the point you can’t just re-paint it! 🤙🍻

The oil wash really brought the whole squad together. I love the snake green skin. The orange shirts were a great choice and the leader makes me think hes wearing a neon orange hunting hat. Safety first.

I think I quite Warhammer around the same time you did. I played Necromunda for maybe a year or two longer. Back then, I switched to Warzone and Chronopia (Fantasy version), both of which I thought has much better rules. The Warzone figures of the time were a profoundly mixed bag. Some awesome...some terrible. Most of the Chronopia figs were good, though. Then I realized I preferred painting the minis to playing the games. But even that hobby I gave up on by 2001 or so.

I don't remember if it's in the rulebook or off of the GW website but there was a short story about a little grenade grot that made me love those little guys.

is that indirect shading the result of watering down your paints? i love how the paint seeps into the darker crevices, it looks so good
It’s likely just the properties of the actual Vallejo Xpress paints and the Citadel Contrast paint line, that’s what they are engineered to do essentially.
As crazy and quirky use of all the colors in the rainbow...those figures came out really nice and unique...something I would field. How do they compare to your friends crew? Again, another fun and entertaining video. Take care.

On the topic of board sizes, 24 sq ft is no longer a standard size for Games Workshop/Warhammer games. So you don't need to fret over filling a table that size with minis. 😉 [Unless you want to play Onslaught] 😜
WH40K universe:
Kill Team is played on a 22x30" board -->> 4.6 sq ft
WH40K 10th ed depends on game size:
* Combat Patrol: 44x30" board -->> 9.2 sq ft
* Incursion & Strike Force (approx. 50 Power/1000 to approx. 100 Power/2000 points): 44x60" board -->> 18.3 sq ft
* Onslaught (approx. 150+ Power/3000+ points): 44x90" board -->> 27.5 sq ft
* Boarding Action: ~55.4x47.8" board -->> 18.4 sq ft
Necromunda: No regulation board size. Can be played on 22x30" (-->> 4.6 sq ft), 44x30" (-->> 9.2 sq ft), and 36x36" (-->> 9 sq ft) boards. Generally played on: 36x36".
WH AoS universe:
Generally uses same sizing as WH40K
* Warcry: 22x30" board -->> 4.6 sq ft
* AoS Skirmish: as Warcry
* AoS standard (1000 to 2000 points): 44x60" board -->> 18.3 sq ft

What mix ratio did you use for the olive green?
50/50, no medium😎🍻
Let oil dry a fuzz longer. Then have your dabber of choice slightly damp with mineral spirits even tap it a couple times on a paper towel. Then use feather light strokes.
Also consider your oil wash may not be saturated enough. Once applied and before the wipe down. The model should look like you really f*cked it up.
Consider a spritz on the model with gloss clear coat if you only want it in the recesses and not acting as a filter over the model.

Wouldn't you rather keep the horrific things on the tabletop instead of duplicating it in real life? Other than that, playing a game about husbandry just doesn't seem to have that excitement factor.
