Why I Went From 33" to 35" Tires on my 4th Gen Toyota 4Runner

  • Today we talk about why I made the jump up from 33s to 35s on my V8 4Th Gen Toyota 4Runner. Going from a 33 inch tire to a 35 inch tire was no small decision - I honestly took months researching the tires, the trimming id have to do, supporting mods, and so many other things. Looking back now, I am really glad I went ahead with it and am stoked to see how the 35s perform after an extended amount of time. In specific, I have Falken Wildpeak At3W 35x12.5 tires on KMC Lobo -38 17x9 wheels. The Falkens have been a brilliant tire so far!

    I’ve been running with the same tires for the past 6 months on my 4Runner and they’ve been great so far on the roads in Calgary and gravel FSRs. Can’t wait to test them in the snow and also hear your opinion on them. Looks like we won’t get a snowstorm on the long weekend this year so snow testing will have to wait 😅
    Really digging the look of your truck! 😎

    I had posted a comment on your BFG review video but wanted to see what you had to say about your Falken's, of course winter is far from over and at least around here ( Grande Prairie area ) its been a weird winter so far with snow in Oct but hardly a thing since and here we are well into Dec. Lots of time yet for you to experience those tires this winter before a more informed update on the Falken's winter performance. I had bought a set of Falken tires this summer but my intent wasn't really winter performance since I typically put on dedicated winter tires. At one of the tire shops I was at, they happened to have a BFG KO2, Toyo AT3, and the Falken AT3W sitting side by side in their showroom and feeling the rubber softness was interesting, both the BFG and the Toyo feel much softer than the Falken. One would swear that the Falken should not grip ice as well as the other two simply based on the feel of the rubber but from your experience so far I get the impression that is not the case ?

      Hey Charles!
      Ive really enjoyed my Falkens so far. They have been much more dependable than my K02’s. They aren’t the best on ice, but realistically nothing is without studs. I have had full confidence in them as a dedicated year round tire here in Calgary. In the snow packs they have been fantastic - no issues at all winter off-roading. I have also preferred their road performance as they are a very responsive and grippy tire in my experience.

    Also when I had my 33s they were 12.5 and I loved the look my 35s were 10.5 and maybe that's why it ran and drove better

    Any issues with having 35s on the 4th gen 4runner? Like parts wearing or breaking? I have the v6
    - Also in Alberta :)

    • @looseaxles
      @looseaxles  8 місяців тому

      Only issues so far have been a little more money in gas haha!
      Wheel bearings, axles, and suspension/bushings are all solid so far. I flushed my power steering fluid recently which really helped with some of the extra groan. With the V6, I’d recommend a regear! Nice!! Let’s go Alberta! Maybe we’ll see eachother around!

    How does this impact the engine, drivetrain, bearings and steering components?

    • @looseaxles
      @looseaxles  11 місяців тому

      Great question!!
      Realistically, with more weight on the corners of the vehicle, everything has to work harder to get the truck moving, and to slow it down. You can relatively expect wheel bearings and related components to wear a little bit quicker, though not too substantially. I would say that the V8 has absolutely no issues pushing 35’s, and a regear to 4.88 would bring things back into perfection.

    If you need to take a shit, it's unavoidable. To put different wheels and tires n your truck/car without a clear reason for it, it's crap in itself.
    And yes, I wrote it because I wanted to.
