It is going quite slow, this is because in actuality the most efficient way to climb is to get out of the high density "soup" of the lower atmosphere as quickly as possible. When I was on my first ever flight as a teenager the sounds of the reversers deploying and the sounds they make freaked me out a bit. Even if it did, if your flying in either some type of boeing or Airbus, which likely is the case as they are amongst the most common passenger airplanes in the skies around the world, (typical commercial passenger jets), they can easily glide 100 miles or more without absolutely zero engines or complete engine failure (assuming you were at sufficient speed prior to failure). So even still as long as you aren't over a large body of water or mountain, there is still pretty good chance that the pilots will have ample time to decide on the best course of action and ultimately a (relatively) safe place to do an emergency landing. So there is still hope that if God forbid an engine may actually ever give out you would walk away.

When you are nervous, your senses become heightened. Since an aircraft is a large machine it makes big noises anytime something moves. Sometimes knowing what those sounds are and recognizing that is exactly how they should be sounding can make you less startled.
What bothers me is that sinking feeling right after takeoff accompanied by reduced engine noise. Sometimes it feels like the engines are going to quit at a critical phase of the flight. I understand the primary cause for this is that jet engines need to be spooled back a few minutes after a full power takeoff to allow them to cool off before resuming a climb out to cruise altitude.
this happens when the flaps are retracted shortly after take-off, nothing to worry about. You can look out the window next time and be prepared so it doesn't come as a surprise :)
I know exactly that "sinking feeling" you mean. It happens, when the climb rate is reduced "from high to zero" very fast (usually by the autopilot). At certain airports / departure routes, the plane needs to climb fast e.g. to avoid mountains, other aircraft etc. The pilots receive an altitude from ATC e.g. "climb to 10.000 feet". Once the plane has reached 10.000 ft, the autopilot will reduce engine power and climb rate. If the climb rate was previously high, and it is reduced fast, you will feel it in your gut. At certain airports / departure routes, the plane can climb more smoothly and you won't feel anything.

Oooh there was a Concorde :) Do you mean at night the cabin lights are dimmed to give us better night vision or the pilots? I always thought it was a safety thing?
Hi Sarah. Thank you so much for your kind words. If you are interested we also have some audio files and training exercises designed to take control over your emotions and fear. We would be happy to share these with you if you are willing to try and get back flying with comfort? The dimming of the lights in the cabin at night time is a safety thing. If we did not do this there could be a safety hazard if you had to leave the plane (evacuation) and your eyes had not adjusted to low light. You could potentially be leaving the plane having a hard time to see in the dark. That is why the lights are dimmed. The pilots control their own lights in the flight deck but they also tend to adjust the lights down so they have the best possible night vision.
You should have mentioned how when the flaps are retracted shortly after take-off, there is a brief "falling" feeling that comes a result of this. I have found that people who do not know much about aviation, get particularly worried when this happens
@@Jeff_1349 I’ve learned that this can’t happen, I’ve had the exact fear. If the plane runs out of gas, the engine fails, etc. The plane is still able to glide for a solid 30-60 minutes which gives you enough time for a landing at a nearby airport!
The falling sensation is just a sensory trick that results from the pilots reducing the amount of thrust now that they don’t need all of that power from takeoff or they have to slow down a bit once they’re suitably high enough from the ground to reduce noise for the people living below them near the airport’s benefit. It’s just a result of the liquid responsible for balance being sloshed around your inner ear.

Thank you so much for this video. I'm not an anxious or nervous flyer, but I really enjoy hearing those noises and wondering what they all mean. This was very useful and now I'll be very much aware of what's going on when I fly again.
I’ve been flying so many times in my life that just by rewatching this video I realized I knew every single step by heart . I just always still find it scary and I hope this feeling will completely go away someday
I have been up in the air 10 times and have never looked out a window. I'm so fearful of flying I pretend to be on a train... the first time ever for me to continue watching out an airplane window. So glad I did not skip over this video & watched from start to finish. Thanks for a great video.
As someone who flies not infrequently, knows what the noises are, and is a very nervous flier, this was very helpful. I have a flight to Japan in a little over a week and have been spending the past handful of days looking for videos and doing a lot of self talk surrounding my fear of flying.
Wow, reading the comments, I never realized how many people were so afraid of flying! I’ve been flying since before I was 2 years old, and on the whole I really enjoy and look forward to it. I like seeing the world from so high, and imagining people going about their day down there on the ground while we fly over their heads. I enjoy looking at the topsides of clouds and watching sunsets and sunrises from a different perspective. I even enjoy exploring airports - you can usually find lots of interesting things in them, if you look. It’s a little sad that some aren’t able to enjoy that because of their fear. Hopefully this video helped them! I’m just here out of curiosity: the noises didn’t worry me but I was curious for the explanation of what they mean. Thank you!
Thank you for the kind comment! More people are afraid of flying than maybe meets the eye. I remember reading a statistic that about 30% people would have fear of flying. Most of these people feel too embarrassed to talk about this. Hopefully we can make this less of a taboo. Believe it or not but the pilot who is making the commentary has fear of heights.
I’m flyin first time ever in 2 days from Dublin to New York, was never out of the country before, but Iv done a skydive at 13000ft 😂 I’m slightly nervous and glad I found this video just to know what to expect it has really helped
Thank you sooo much for posting this video. I haven't flown since I was a little girl in the 90s and I do remember being quite scared. Now that I'm an adult, I've got terrible anxiety and a flight in two days. I could practically feel the stress melting off of me while watching this video. 🥰
My fear of flying got me banned from going on any family vacation that requires us to fly. We flew to Yellowstone and I hated every minute of the flight. I hated the feeling of being trapped and every noise made me think that the plane was going to fall out of the sky. When it was time to fly back home I freaked out and refused to get on the plane with the rest of my family. I ended up getting a rental car to drive myself home... well I ended up wrecking the rental car and my parents had to fly out to visit me in the ICU. So now I miss out on everything because my fear of flying is so intense but recently I decided that I would try to overcome my fear of flying and this video helped so thank you!
I wish you was sat next to me on a plane your voice is so reassuring i am such a nervous flyer and wont fly long haul due to this ! As soon as i hear the ding i panic wondering whats going on ! Thankyou so much for this very informative video you now have a new subscriber 👍🏻❤️
I’ve only flown twice in my life. First, when I was 15, I flew from Atlanta to Boston (refuel) and then over to Brussels, Belgium. Was terrified of flying over the Atlantic for my first flight. Second flight was from Atlanta to San Francisco. Crossing the Rockies it looked like the bottom of the plane wasn’t going to clear the mountain peaks. Then arriving in San Fran, since the airport sits on the bay we had to fly out over the Pacific and do a 180 to come in and land. Looking out the window we kept dropping lower and lower and I was seeing no land, only water… thought we were gonna take a dip!
Hahah, I've had the exact same thought when landing at Lisbon airport, it's similarly placed on the coast of Portugal and the pilot kept flying us further out over the Atlantic for about 5-7 minutes while also losing altitude. When I couldn't even see the coast behind us anymore I started feeling so uncomfortable! Planning on flying on a long haul from London to San Fransisco in a few months so good to know about the rockies and to expect similar landing over the ocean!
Thank you dear sire. I'm flying tommorow, high anxiety flier here. Your calm voice helps me so much! I'm crying from fear watching the whole routine and landing safely, hoping for a calm fly tommorow too - 16 hours in the air! I'll download this and rewind over and over, thankyou.
I wanted to say that the pilot job goes quite unnocticed. I feel kind of lazy now. As a passenger flights are time for me to be lazy and play with the screen while flight attendants bring food. You took 9 minutes to explain takeoff and another 9 minutes to explain landing. It shows that this job is a serious commitment for passengers to be as safe as possible.
Thank you! I get so very nervous during takeoff for some reason and this helped. Not sure it will stop me from being nervous but this info helps me rationalize better :)
This helped me alot in my fear of flying. Thanks! By the way, i love flying with Finnair. Although fear of flying is present in every journey, i feel super safe!!!
My first airline flight was alone at age 11. I was flying on a Continental 737-500. When we landed in Houston and the reversers deployed I freaked out because I thought something had ripped off as I was seeing the inside of the engine in my mind. I pushed the call button several times, prompting them to announce that they couldn’t get up until we reached the gate. Of course it slid back into place and I got a lengthy trip to the cockpit out of it.
I have a flight bkd in a few weeks and im so terrified that the booking alone gave me the biggest stomach ache i couldnt eat all night .. how am i gona get on this plane? My last trip was 15 yrs ago i just cant bring myself to getting on a plane i just cant.. and im 41 yrs old this video was incredible but the fear wont go away.. its such an awful hindering feeling 😢
Honestly the thing that freaks me out the most is when the engines turn down after climbing because my hindbrain thinks the plane will fall out of the sky, but knowing that even if both engines sudddenly stopped the plane wouldn't drop out of the sky because it's going so fast has really helped. It would just glide and the pilots would have enough time to land the plane.
Frrrr and sometimes you can feel the airplane slow down in the air and i be like “holy fuck why are we stopping in the air we’re gonna fall” but then i realize I’m in a whole ass airplane
I was on a flight not long ago where we were coming through clouds but there were some really strange changes in thrust. At times it felt like we were going almost full thrust then going with far less, then speeding up again. I was pretty frightened by this as it isn't something that has happened me often and others were looking at each other as if to say this is weird. A few thought we were circling. I should add that there was a very strong breeze or crosswind when we got off the plane? Was the changes in thrust based on that?
I'm so frightened of flying, I've done 4 return trips. Thank you so much for explaining all this, it really has helped. You have the most calming voice! Please can you come with me next time though just to make sure 🙂
I fly every two years for 13-14 hours up in the sky hanging. But 6 years ago, I encountered a bad turbulence. Starting that time, I developed a severe anxiety and fear of flying. It’s so terrible specially I had to fly alone. I shook that whole time. I didn’t tell even to the person next to me. I almost collapse. But I had to deal with my fear. I was embarrassed that all were sleeping except me. Lol. Glad I survived. 😂 I still fly because I have to, but I swear, it so really hard to deal with fear and anxiety. Now I take pills and drink alcohol every time I fly. This video helps and other videos too, I know flying is still the safest, but to be honest,it’s hard to deal with fear.. “But oh well, if it’s our time, it’s our time!” That’s what I say to my self. I’ll leave my trust to the pilots. That’s all. Tomorrow I’m flying to Hawaii. I won’t sleep the whole night tonight, I’ll take melatonin and drink wine. Wish me luck! 😂
The only thing that I noticed missing was using the spoilers to start slowing down the airplane before any flaps are extended. The spoilers do create some wing vibration and noise so it would have been good to also show that. Overall, I think this was very well done.
Flying is still one of the most exciting things you can do in life,I understand everyone's fears I do because I was the same, but videos like these helped me overcome that fear and eventually I got to really enjoy it,conquer your fears too and then enjoy.
Thanks so much for this wonderful video. I've watched it three times now. Flying to Austria next Tuesday. I haven't flown more than an hour flight in over 40 years.
I just flew back LAX to FLL and apparently there was crazy wind from New Mexico all the way to Florida so basically 2 hours of bad turbulence. I fly a lot but just one turbulent flight makes me never want to fly again.
i used to have tons of anxiety while flying. i don't anymore but i loved this regardless because it gives me great joy to know what all the different sounds are!
Quick question. Do you know how some planes takeoff with this very distinctive humming sound? I’m gonna get a little technical here, but it’s usually a very low tone, and the notes of it range from B1 to a two. I’m sorry this is how musicians talk. I’m a pianist. But, do you know why that hum is on some airplanes? What’s the science behind that?
Pilots got to have more fun in the 80s via the intercom. I recall an Alaska Airlines flight to Los Angeles from Bellingham in the mid 80s where the pilot said we were having problems with some equipment onboard and said that he hoped that during taxi time to the runway that the bumping should help straighten out the problem. LOL.
Note: The sound of the hydraulics being powered on is something you can really only hear on Airbus planes. That “barking dog” noise is a hydraulic pump called the power transfer unit or PTU. Boeing planes have an entirely different hydraulic system, one that you can’t hear when it powers up
this definitely braught me back to 2019, my first time flying, there's been a curious question on my mind since then, does the temperature get colder when landing or is it just me, I've flown 4 times now, counting return flights and that's always puzzled me, because I am visually impaired I rely on my other senses to know what's going on, on some planes I automaticly know when you are about to land, in fact, I can all ready hear a few sounds before then and feel the plane going downwords before the announcement, I hope I get to go to marmris again this summer as I can document what I hear and feel next time
The only thing that gets me through a flight is the idea that if we do end up going down, my last minutes would be nothing but me shouting "I told you so!" to ever poor bastard in ear shot 😅
Frequent AND nervous flyer here. This video is great. I did wonder why there is that lack of engine noise and my first thought is “does anyone else know?!” haha. I also sometimes hear a high pitched noise in the cabin - I wonder what that could be?
Lack of engine noise: If the plane descends from a higher to a lower altitude, sometimes the engines are put on idle, to ensure the plane doesn't go too fast. This can happen before landing, or in the middle of the flight (altitude changes happen e.g. to avoid turbulences or other aircraft). High pitched noise: Can you describe it in more detail? When does it happen, and how exactly does it sound? It could be the flaps extended before landing.
If sounds really invoke uncomfortable anxiety I would highly recommend wearing headphones if u got em (never during the flight attendants safety debriefings tho ofcourse.
I'm very grateful for stumbling across this clip. Flying in July and I'm petrified. I found your voice calming and reassuring and have saved this to play. Can you tell me which is the best seat to sit in. Flying to Switzerland direct. I'm really scared. Thankyou ❤❤
People - you need to practice breathwork to calm your nervous systems. Daily. Even just read the comment section of his videos. Do the work. Change your life. Choose freedom and joy over accepting a state of fear.
So i herd a plane fly above me and a buddy when we were kayaing last weekend. Every thing sounded normal then Probably about half way into it passing over it sounded like it flew through a tube or something, like all muffled and suppressed or maybe it did a barrel roll?..idk if it would that would do it? But either way iv never herd a plane in my 30+ years of life make that noise.
Excellent video That was really nice quality and voiceover. I have a couple of questions: When do flights go on autopilot and stop the autopilot? Also a common noise that I hear near landing is when the wheels are opening (I think).
Great video! After a flight were the hydraulics noise was going off and on during the entire taxi and even during take off I wanted to know what it was! I also could bearly hear the engines on the 777 I was on, so I was slowly starting to suspect one engine had starting issues as the hydraulic sound came with an engine start. Thought the engines were restarted several times during taxi, which wasn't a very nice thought to have..
Thanks for this great video. I am really afraid of flying and this video explains a lot of noises but also shows how normal flying is for you. Your calm presentation shows that there should be nothing to be afraid of. If wish my feelings could belive what my brains says... have to fly tomorrow. Curious to see how it will work out for me 🤘💪
But what about a high pitch spooling of the engine mid-flight that continues for the duration. An obvious change of tone in one or both engines. Sounds like it needs to be lubed up or something. What causes that? Is that normal?

@@AskAPilot Thank you so very much. I would love you to share the exercises you mention :)
You should have mentioned how when the flaps are retracted shortly after take-off, there is a brief "falling" feeling that comes a result of this. I have found that people who do not know much about aviation, get particularly worried when this happens
The falling mid flight is what bothers me. More than turbulence. Like dropping in an elevator
@@mikoto7693 thank you sm for this!!! really helps calm down my anxiety
It's not when flaps are retracted, it's when the plane reduces the pitch angle
this was amazing! i’m an extremely anxious flyer and i felt like i was on a flight looking out the window and you were sitting next to me explaining everything that was going on. knowledge really is power. i’m way less nervous about flying now.
We are so happy to hear this! We are also now editing a new video and next flight with us will be on the 787 Dreamliner. :)
I hate flying. But I watched this video before flying to Chicago a couple of weeks ago, it helped me. Having 3 drinks at the bar, didn't hurt either..lol
Thank you for this video! Your calm and reassuring voice, along with the comprehensive explanations, are very helpful for an anxious flyer. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video. I'm not an anxious or nervous flyer, but I really enjoy hearing those noises and wondering what they all mean. This was very useful and now I'll be very much aware of what's going on when I fly again.
Thank you for the sweet comment. We are so glad that you found the video helpful. 😊
This video made me extra nervous lol I absolutely hate takeoff. And during trips I tend to me nervous the whole time anticipating the ride home
Please can you make a video on turbulence. I’m always scared the plane is out of control
Both the content and your calm tone of voice are a comfort to the nervous flyer.
Have you ever wanted to become a pilot or flight crew? I know that a lot of people want exactly these jobs
Just get loaded before going to the airport
@@AskAPilot Very interesting!
how did your flight go, I havent flown in 5 years and I am supper nervous as I have flight coming up
@@mieshamccray560 I wonder if you've flown too? I have my flight next Tuesday and my anxiety is next level :(
This is great! I was nervous about a flight I have coming up but knowing all the noises really helps. I'm feeling calm and confident!
Probably the most informative and detailed aircraft video I've ever watched! I've learnt so much. Thank you a million!
Wow, thanks!
Aw I’m so sorry! Let’s make it a New Years resolution to conquer our fear next year!!
Are you okay after the crash?
Probably a bit more nervous in a car too. Sorry about the crash. As they say, when you have time to spare, go by air. 🙂
I wish you was sat next to me on a plane your voice is so reassuring i am such a nervous flyer and wont fly long haul due to this ! As soon as i hear the ding i panic wondering whats going on ! Thankyou so much for this very informative video you now have a new subscriber 👍🏻❤️
Im 68 and ive NEVER flown!! Definitely very nervous!! Thank you!! I leave in August 2022!!
Been a while but how was your flight?
@@ronnierobinson2842 , it was fabulous!! My flights were great and hope to do it again!! Alaska was wonderful. Thanks for asking!!
They should have a radio nervous flyers can tune into that talks to you about everything 🥺 its super embarrssing being alone and upset
1:43 The hydraulic system start sound is what scare me the most ... 😅
It is a weird one :D
This could be a double edge sword. Because if you hear something that wasn’t covered in this video, good luck lol.
Appreciate your very calm delivery. This makes a huge difference, to me anyway. Thank you.
Glad to hear it!
TY for this, I have a fear of flying and unexplained noises scare me so much. This has really helped me understand what the noises mean.
What is the sound of the engines powering down just after take off?
I'm not a nervous flyer but I love these sounds 😍
Thank you so much for this guide! It was super relaxing and educational!
Im glad youre not nervous! Whats your tip
thank you SO much for this! your relaxing voice has calmed me down
Honestly the thing that freaks me out the most is when the engines turn down after climbing because my hindbrain thinks the plane will fall out of the sky, but knowing that even if both engines sudddenly stopped the plane wouldn't drop out of the sky because it's going so fast has really helped. It would just glide and the pilots would have enough time to land the plane.
Frrrr and sometimes you can feel the airplane slow down in the air and i be like “holy fuck why are we stopping in the air we’re gonna fall” but then i realize I’m in a whole ass airplane
You aren't alone I have a reoccurring dream/nightmare about it...its normal to be a little fearful
We are so glad this was helpful! You can very soon come and fly with us again as we are currently editing a new video and we're flying the 787.
I still fly because I have to, but I swear, it so really hard to deal with fear and anxiety.
Are you a danish pilot? :o
I don't relax until I feel the wheels rolling on the ground.
Never felt so relaxed seeing a takeoff lol this is great!!
You have explained so well. Can you talk more about turbulence please
Fantastic! Thank you very much for this video.
Airplanes can’t move backwards, but helicopters can FLY backwards!
I want to know what the tones mean.
i used to have tons of anxiety while flying. i don't anymore but i loved this regardless because it gives me great joy to know what all the different sounds are!
Thanks alot. A very useful video to explain all those aircraft noises.
Just watching this makes me anxious 😢
Same I'm absolutely petrified. It's not the noises that scare me but knowing if anything did go wrong there's nothing I could do about it.
God bless this guy! Best video I have watched . Thank you
This video really helped calm my anxiety. Thank you.
Boeing planes have an entirely different hydraulic system, one that you can’t hear when it powers up
Very communicative and excellent video. Thank you very much.
Glad it was helpful!
i like captains voice its a lot more reassuring than u think
this definitely braught me back to 2019, my first time flying, there's been a curious question on my mind since then, does the temperature get colder when landing or is it just me, I've flown 4 times now, counting return flights and that's always puzzled me, because I am visually impaired I rely on my other senses to know what's going on, on some planes I automaticly know when you are about to land, in fact, I can all ready hear a few sounds before then and feel the plane going downwords before the announcement, I hope I get to go to marmris again this summer as I can document what I hear and feel next time
Thank you for this great video. Your calm explanations helped put my fears at ease.
the only type I have heard the dog-bark sound of the hydraulic system was the Airbus narrowbody.
I also hear that high pitched noise sometimes. Its definitely the engine. I notice it on Airbus more than Boeing!
Thankyou ❤❤
Wow few videos did help but this was great. I think being more informed about the plane is really helpful.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Normalize narrating every flight.
Ok, good night.
Finnair plane! Go Finland! 🇫🇮 🇫🇮 🇫🇮
People - you need to practice breathwork to calm your nervous systems. Daily. Just as fat people need exercise to regain normal body and function, your breath needs to be trained to regain normal function of your nervous system.
Try “breathe with Sandy” on here. Even just read the comment section of his videos.
Do the work.
Change your life.
Choose freedom and joy over accepting a state of fear.
this is very very helpful, thank you!
The worst part to watch these videos (which are great for MY FOF) UA-cam start suggesting videos of aircrafts accidents WTF. 😭
I’m flying tomorrow and i hope this will help
How was ur flight ?
So i herd a plane fly above me and a buddy when we were kayaing last weekend. Every thing sounded normal then Probably about half way into it passing over it sounded like it flew through a tube or something, like all muffled and suppressed or maybe it did a barrel roll?..idk if it would that would do it? But either way iv never herd a plane in my 30+ years of life make that noise.
Thank you for an amazing explanation 👏🏻👏🏻
Excellent video
That was really nice quality and voiceover.
I have a couple of questions:
When do flights go on autopilot and stop the autopilot?
Also a common noise that I hear near landing is when the wheels are opening (I think).
I have to drown out airplane noises with a train video I put it on full blast to drown it out because I don’t like it
Great video!
The biggest helps for me are when flying becomes normalised and more realised for me, and this really helped. Thank you!
Thanks for this great video.
I am really afraid of flying and this video explains a lot of noises but also shows how normal flying is for you. Your calm presentation shows that there should be nothing to be afraid of. If wish my feelings could belive what my brains says... have to fly tomorrow. Curious to see how it will work out for me 🤘💪
Nice video but big goof by recording in portrait ;) horizontal would have been much easier to see, especially on mobile phone.
Why do the pilots turn the plane during the initial climb? Instead of waiting until they have reached cruising altitude?
But what about a high pitch spooling of the engine mid-flight that continues for the duration. An obvious change of tone in one or both engines. Sounds like it needs to be lubed up or something. What causes that? Is that normal?
❤️❤️❤️✈️✈️✈️✈️, I'm glad to see Ask a Pilot team 👏👏
