I really enjoyed watching your video. At first glance, I thought it would be too difficult for me as a beginner in watercolor but decided to try it. I learned a lot in the process and I'm happy with the result. I would like to show you my lighthouse but don't know how to send it.

    Hi Matthew,
I received an email from you to view this video as I am a student of yours. I am glad to receive it. Thank you
I LOVE your course. You are very thorough in your explanations and I strongly sense how much you care about your students. Also, your tutorials are perfect. Everything is written and summarised on the screen. Lastly, your vision is different to other instructors I have had lessons with. You go outside the box and have those little add-ons in your conversations with us that expands our thinking and is broarder than what others offer. I'm really happy to have as my art teacher.

So cool! I have done a fair amount of pen and ink work over the years, as well as some watercolor, but have never been brave enough to mix them. Even just fast forwarding through this (which I do, typically, because while I like tips, I generally prefer to figure out techniques on my own), I found so much that I could apply to my own work. I'll definitely be making the plunge into this type of work!

Love this painting. Just starting out painting and trying your pen/ink watercolor method. I have drawn a lighthouse overlooking a rocky cliff with sailboat in ocean all in front of setting colorful sun. As my subjects are mostly with direct light on them, what colors/ combinations would be advisable for my situation? Will be joining soon as a beginner (72). Thanks

What kind of ink did you use? Look like it's absolute waterproof. Many inks which claimed to be "waterproof" are not true such as "Noodler's", etc. It works on only one certain paper, I think! So what brand of ink did you use in this video clip? Thank you

A question about ink bleeding. I created a very amateur piece of work and used line and wash. I was so disappointed that the ink seemed to blur when it made contact with the watercolours. I used incredibly cheap paper but same pens as you use/the artist uses. Was it the cheap paper that cause the bleeding or is there something else that I should've taken into consideration?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

When it comes to Watercolor, the paper does matter. Thick Watercolor paper with an average gsm of 300 is perfect.
Watercolor paper is thick so that it can handle a good amount of water without tearing, or turning into tiny paper bits.

Your pen has a non-waterproof ink. There are many with waterproof ink. Once this dries, you can use watercolor over it and the ink will not run.

I didn't paint for years because I knew I would be disappointed with my results. The first paintings I did a few years ago were very naive!! But I persevered and got better - some of the time. I have some of my paintings on the wall and am amazed that they are mine - others are dreadful!! But if for every 99 disappointments you get one painting that you are proud of; then it's worth it. Give it a go Judith - you may surprise yourself.
