AS12/2 - East of the Sun - 1942 D'Angelico Excel

- Hey guys, I’ve decided to record another version of this standard since the one I did on the 1937 Gibson Super 400 was one of the very first acoustic standards, so hopefully the playing should be better on this one. The standard is called « East of the sun » and was composed in 1934 by Brooks Bowman.
I’m playing a 1942 D’Angelico Excel (17 inches, parallel braced, short scale), with D’Addario Flatwound strings gauge 12. I’m using a Dunlop gator 0.71mm pick and the sound is captured by a DPA 4099g, a Neumann TLM 103 and a Bluebird microphone.

Nice video, Romain. This D'Angelico "Excel" sounds fabulous and is, to my ear, perfectly balanced. One more reason why John D'Angelico's guitars are still the "crowning glory" of archtops. Good job, Romain!

I think using a heavier pick would give it a more solid sound, the thinner pick can't drive the soundboard to its optimal beauty, especially a guitar like that.
Well this guitar can t reach a huge volume, but the tone is perfect ! But when i use a thicker pick it looses a bit of clarity, to my ears at least
