Man, I was in that crowd, about a dozen rows back from the stage Phil Zone and I still get goosebumps every time I hear this. Those sounds just came rolling off the stage, picked us up off the floor, threw us through the roof and carried us back down again after a quick tour of the solar system. Oh so slowly. And the man had never even heard the song before he stepped out on to stage and started to play. Something I'm not sure you're aware of, Jerry is missing his middle finger on his pick hand.
Apparently, Branford Marsalis didn't know any of the Dead's music before this night. They invited him out to play Bird Song at the end of the first set. It went so well that they insisted he stay for the second set too.
I was there that first night Branford played with them. Amazing, especially considering the FACT (yes, he had never heard any Dead music previously). Met Branford years later at Yoshi's jazz club in Oakland. Also met Phil Lesh after the second show of that Sunday. Both were easy-going, gracious and appreciative.
Concert regret #2....best friend in college had mail ordered for show tix directly thru the band for the entire Nassau run (3/28, 3/29 & 3/30) The final show was being simulcast on local radio, so that was covered. My budget only allowed for either the first or second night AND I had an exam on 29th late in the day & there was no way we could get there in time....choose the first night (pretty good show too)...but when they came back to the dorms that night....couldn't believe it....we were also all huge Sting fans & that's who Branford was performing with at the time, so we were VERY familiar with him....le sigh
First time I saw them was at the Avalon Ballroom on Catalina Island (26 miles off the coast of Southern California) in 1966. After that I jumped in my 1964 VW bus and drove up north to see them at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco for several shows, living in my van with one of my friends. It was a great 6 or 7 months of my youth. ✌️
I was at this show. A very special evening. One of the best trips I took with the Captain (so glad I had some liquid sunshine to dose that night) - a top five night for me for sure. The energy in the room was electric - I went the following night as well, and that particular show just came off as an encore for the night Branford "joined" the band - everybody was still lit - it took far longer than usual to get a copy of the soundboard for that night as rumor had it that the boys took the cassettes for themselves to listen to that night - a tremendous show and a "moment" in Grateful Dead history
The first time I smoked pot was at a dead concert at Fillmore in 1966. I smoked cigarettes at the time and thought someone was offering to share his/her cigarette with me. I haven't stopped smoking those 'special' cigarettes since.
This video is 19 minutes long, but it is some of the best of the jazzy Dead you could hear. Dark Star Jam / Spanish Jam / U.S. Blues (Live in Miami, June 23, 1974) Cheers.
Man, the Wake of The Flood album gave us so many great tracks that worked into the live rotation! Well, the whole album, actually! "Eyes of The World" is Interstellar Travel Music for me! It can take you to all points and beyond! One of my absolute favorite space jam Dead songs! (along with Bird Song, Wharf Rat, Dark Star, The Other One, etc.) In four short months, we would lose Brent....... "And night comes so quiet, it's close on the heels of the day"
For about 15 years before this particular version they played the song incredibly fast, whereas the first couple of years after they introduced it in 1973, they played it in a similar tempo to this version, but also played an intricate and Jazzy coda that is well worth seeking out
Saw a bunch of shows around this time, but I missed this one off event. "Eyes Of The World" was usually preceded by the song "Estimated Prophet", Dead Heads called it "Estimated/Eyes", and I have heard this version several times, but I have never seen the accompanying video. Thank You so much for showing it! Branford Marsalis is the man on the Saxophone, and a star in his own Jazz World, as evidenced by his ability. As others have noted, Branford did not know the Dead, and Vice Versa, but they were aware of each other, and well, musicians make music.
This guy was on the live album, without a net. Brandford had hardly heard of the Dead and he didn't know any songs. Somehow they hooked up, a match Made in heaven. Believe brandford is playing soprano sax 🍄🌁🍄🧬🍄🌍🍄
Awesome!!! I was at this show and it was completely mind-blowing. Branford’s first dead show and mine as well. They were on fire the whole night. As fantastic as jerry and branford are on this, check out phil’s bass playing. Insane!
At nassau. It was a spectacular night, which I almost missed - car issues that week. When Branford played on Bird Song, we thought that was it. Then Eyes came first in the second set, he was still there, and we were done. holy shit. I saw Branford many times, in and around the NY area, before. I never thought of him playing with the Dead. BTW, he also played many movie tunes, including most for School Daze (he was in that movie, as well.).
I've heard this version 1000 times and I still react the way you did when Jerry began his second solo. It's an absolute masterpiece. Now react to the entire show from 7/4/89 Trucking Up to Buffalo.
I just saw this video today. I’m happy that you’re discovering the Grateful Dead’s music. As for this song, my very favorite Eyes is from the Grateful Dead Movie, recorded at The Winterland in October 1974. This is the link to it: m.ua-cam.com/video/KlmjC4z6c-Y/v-deo.html
one other thought - why not try a "newer" song (born in the early 1980's) - this version of "Throwing Stones" was when this song was still widely referred to as "Bobby's new song" - it came on the heels of a rare for that time St Stephen - ua-cam.com/video/Qv0vqYu3_NA/v-deo.html - listen to this and know that Jerry turned my head into a tuning fork during the crescendo - never had that happen to me prior nor since - it was an incredible moment on a night of an incredible show - try it; you'll like it

And some of the best music ever was made. Improvisation at its finest.

That was weird. I just started a video for the Eyes from this night when your comment showed up.
Not surprised at all...both were top notch musicians who played live a lot....

Dude! I was there too! Did you see me? I was that hippy chick, you know, the one with long brown hair? I was wearing a tie dye tee shirt!
The first time I smoked pot was at a dead concert at Fillmore in 1966. I smoked cigarettes at the time and thought someone was offering to share his/her cigarette with me. I haven't stopped smoking those 'special' cigarettes since.
I wasn't there at this concert, but I'm sure I saw you at every dead concert I've ever attended. ✌️
@krypticalenvelopment I thought all three nights were stellar, but the Branford night was definitely the peak!
The greatest band in the World !
Loyal Dead Head .
This was my very 1st dead show, I followed them for the next 4 1/2 years....I fell in love
This video is 19 minutes long, but it is some of the best of the jazzy Dead you could hear.
Dark Star Jam / Spanish Jam / U.S. Blues (Live in Miami, June 23, 1974) Cheers.
I think this is the second song he'd ever played with the band and didn't know it at all. Great musicians, all listening to each other...Grate stuff!

Brent with the amazing key fills… this one never gets old. The train was running like a well oiled machine this night!
The best version of the best song ever written 💗
Greg Osby once played w "the Dead". Also a very good jazz guy. Branford fit like a glove.
Eyes vibe for me is a drive with the windows or top down on the first warm spring day. Just smiling.
Just exactly perfect...
Everyone at the top of their game. This always makes me smile.

Starting with the version before this one (3/25/90), the Estimated/Eyes combo never appeared again. True story.
Aaahh, the spring '90 Nassau run. I remember it well, all three nights were incredible.
Branford knocks it out of the park on this song.

Thats the amazing Branford Marsalis on Sax

Same here. I can't get enough of this version.
What a great performance. I saw the dead 5 or six times and every one of them was fabulous.
Always a treat when they played with someone else, I saw this show and it felt special at the time.
33 years later it still feels plenty special
nice choice for the first time you heard this song. As has been said, Branford did not even know the songs...... it was an amazing night
It would’ve been cool to queue up the song from the Without a Net album since this is the same version but audience recording.
my favorite eyes of the world!
"Sometimes we live in no particular way but our own" thanks bud (:
A rainbow full of sound.
Great Dead choices, Branford Marsalis Sax adds to the Dead
I was at this show.
I was there. Awesome Eyes.

I saw this live
Is this the version that’s on Without a Net? Sounds like it!!
Yes it is.
I have listened to Live Without a Net so many times. And I never get tired of it. Over 30+ years.
How can you be a viable listener without knowing who Branford is? I hope thus transformed you
Are you on the Bus?
